Will this game be very heavily "gear driven"..?

Hey guys. I Just discovered this game over the weekend, and Im about an 11/10 on the excited scale right now.

I was a former WoW player (like 7-8 years ago), FFXI before that. Big time pvper, not so big on raids, at least not the wow style snooze fests that felt more like work than fun... Thats what pretty much drove me away. Well that and the lack of ass I was getting at 20 years old!

Well lifes changed, and Im ready for a great game to absorb my free time again. I absolutely love the open world stuff, mainly pvp, so this game seems like its got a great new approach to it. Absolutely love the Elder Scrolls games as well, and dont think I could imagine a more perfect setting for an MMO than Tamriel.

My question, if anyone has any info on it (and I acknowledge that its probably unknown at this point), is how "gear driven" will this game be? Or in other words, how important is gear going to be? Im reading about this level scaling and whatnot in the PVP area, so Im thinking gear is secondary to skill..?

Will there be other incentives, or will gear be the primary "carrot on a stick" that we'll be chasing? Not that Im even opposed to it, I just really dont want to be mindlessly grinding dungeons just so I can do what I really want to being doing, which is kicking ass in PVP.

Im not saying that all I want to do is PVP, because I absolutely do love doing the dungeons a few times. But what I dont want is to be left in the dust gear wise by the hardcoe raiders who dont mind doing the same dungeon 500 times. Im just not interested in that same disappointment again, that realization that your never even going to be semi-competitive in PVP until you button down and join a raiding guild and waste 40 hours of your life per week doing something thats more monotonous than work.

Gear is set up the same (stat wise)as it is in other TES games with gear. And having low lvl gear in a higher lvl area shows since ya be taking a beating. Higher lvl gear = higher defense. Same way with other mmos.

while gear IS the main reason to keep doing things like PVE, PVP has it's own way of getting gear (Which does not have it's own stats and so can be used in PVE as well) thanks to the way the games PVP system is. You will not have to worry about being forced to do PVE to play in PVP, if anything, it might become the opposite.

your base stats are upped, the gear stays the same.

I'm curious about this myself and AFAIK there is no clear-cut answer about how important and impactful grinding will be.

Well, we likely know what the "PvP endgame" is, but as for PvE I have no clue what could be a suitable reward besides good armor and such.

Also something potentially devastating I'm watching out for.

WoW with PvP gear is bad, but before it was downright terrible with raiders having such a massive advantage. Let's not repeat and reverse that terrible time.

Thats amazing to hear. Thanks for the input, thats exactly what I was looking for.

I dont mind if getting better gear is always going to be the primary goal. I know thats what MMOs are about, and I like it too. I just want to be doing what I like doing along that journey to get there.
