Will this be the COD killer or Halo destroyer?

Post » Sat Aug 15, 2009 10:21 am

Ive always wanted some new FPS to come out that dominates games like Call of Duty and Halo. Someone else needs to step up to the plate and have a real match against big games such as those. From the looks of Brink so far, this game DEFINITELY has the potential, but potential alone will not make a game stand out amongst the big titles that seem to throw each new game away into the trash.I'm hoping that Brink will be that one game that shows up all the other FPS out there. Already Brink has features that I only dream of to be executed together in a smooth fashion. What I mean by this is that their are a lot of good features in games these days, especially in the more popular ones, but they are never brought together to create some kind of "super game" so to speak. A lot of popular traits in games that I want to see mixed together somehow would be an xp/unlocking/leveling etc. system (think of COD), a deep character customization system (seems Brink already has that :D), some kind of user created content (weather it be maps, gun skins, player skins, call signs(from COD) ), etc.

Everyone has their own ideas on what a "super game" would be like. Do you think that Brink could possibly turn out to be that "super game?" Why or why not? Do you think it needs anything or needs to take out or avoid certain things, what do you think?'

Personally I think that Brink has a chance to become very successful.

Unfortunately the unwashed masses are automatically drawn to the big titles. I don't think this game even needs to beat them. Just as long as it's better ;) And yeah, Brink's pretty close to my idea of the perfect game so far. Just as long as it turns out good in the end!

doubt it will beat halo reach. call of duty is falling apart already. the one coming out in the winter wont nearly be as big as mw2. i guess we just have to wait and see how brink turns out

No game will really kill another. They can take a portion of the player base but games don't really get killed, they just die with time. Sometimes they do, but not often. BC2 has taken a large portion of CoD and Halo players simply because (despite it's faults) it's a damn good game. I think/hope Brink will take a fair portion of the player base of the aforementioned games but I woild like it to attract "outside talent", or players that don't usually go for the generic shooter, but are drawn to Brink as it seems to be different to other shooters.

I dont think it will kill them, personally im not a huge fan of FPS, im more on RPG and Fighting games,(except from Gears of War, coz im a big fan) but this one mix FPS with some RPg and that makes me come here and play.

it will just bring people that normally dont play typical FPS because is not a typical FPS.

Ya that's one thing a game needs is advertisemant.

Here's another sub-topic that my friends and I have discussed: Would it be alright if another FPS had a kill cam in it. Kill cams are a great thing. It lets you anolyze what you did wrong, gives you an idea of how the enemy is playing, and may just give you an edge to where your enemy is camping or what he can see from his position. I think that the kill cam should be a standard in FPS games, much like a melee attack is now a days whether the melee be a knife, a hit with a gun, etc.

The idea of a Kill Cam is already being discussed in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1089367-a-fun-idea/ thread.

Brink and Halo Reach are really going to both be good. Getting both, going to enjoy both. CoD is and would be falling apart even withoout BC2, because of the lawsuits between IW and Activision. I doubt it will "kill" Halo, which btw, is impossible, and some CoD games will still be played. I just hope it hits the crowd of tactical/strategic/pro players, because in my opinion, a lot of people from CoD [more specifically MW2] seem to fall into "complete bumrush with nothing but extremely high rpm guns" or the "I'm going to stay back with claymores and just completely snipe your faic" categories, which I never seem to like, even if they might be able to complete objectives in Brink.

id like to keep some of the CoD community out of brink because they are so annoying. it wont even come close to halo reach considering it is the most anticipated gamr of 2010. i dont blame it, halos a great game and reach seems to be even better than the ones before it

The CoD community is really non-existent IMHO. They're all too busy trying to be cool by insulting everyone that has a mic to really band together and make something even resembling a community. I can't wait till people realize Infinity Ward just keeps re-hashing the same multi-player over and over, but with an increasingly shinier paint job each time. I mean what , they're working on like CoD 6 now or something? At least Bungie gets some props for doing something NEW in Reach. But Brink's still gonna be better then them all :P

treyarch is making the next one that is coming out in the winter. infinity ward will most likely never make another game again which means the franchise will slowly diminish into nothing. brink will still probably sell fairly well so it doesnt matter anyway

This game does have allot of potential to be the basis of an enjoyable and hopefully long lived gaming community but I think something that could put it over the top into the 'super game' territory would be a way of making the player feel they have some kind of foot hold on the games world. Something like being able to own parts of the arks territory with your faction or clan e.g some areas start as neutral and these then pass between factions dependent on the ratio of games won and lost. Maybe even some kind of simple stat based ranking system for player clans', so other players can see who are the big swingers are so to speak. Something as simple as that ranking system could end up producing a game within a game, where clans play against each other to be the strongest one there is.

True, I doubt Brink will blow the other big FPS's out of the water, but I do think that Brink has the potential to be a serious contender in this competitive genre.

The crowd that is drawn to COD and Halo, are primarily DM, TDM, and CTF fans. A game like Brink, with classes and team based objective gameplay, NO 1 SHOT SNIPERS OR MELEE KILLS, no real reward for killing, no global leaderboards, etc. would just get the typical "that game is gay," response from a majority of the players. I would see Brink appealing more to maybe a Battlefield crowd, and of course, players of previous SD games.

I don't want Brink to be a "killer" of COD or Halo, because that would mean their players would migrate over to Brink, and that would go over like a fart in church, but I would like Brink to become popular and build its own community to the level where years later, people are still playing it.

ive never been a big fan of battlefield games and ive never played any other splash damage games. the main reason why im so interested in brink is very simple. customization

I was speaking based on gameplay, not extra options. I can see a lot of people who don't really play shooters, being interested in Brink for things like customization, XP, unlocking skills, etc. and that would be fine. I just don't want to see the community overrun by "BOOM! Headshot!" or "I pwned you newb!" type people.

i dont see this game being a halo killer or cod killer,, but i do see it creating its own community like gears of war did,
i see this game goin farther than shadowrun... (poor game had so much potential)
i hate to say that they added too much into the game to start a dynasty.. but that might be the case
in my opinion... all your games halo, cod, bf, rs, cs they all started somewhere in the beginning and they started with the basics, and they had dedicated communitys

halo being a one gun game with the pistol in the beginning, cod having large servers and nonstop action and the only game of its time with the kill cam.. was a large tourney game, bf being an all out fun laugh fest by having the so many vehicles you could use... i remember being at lan-centers and having the time of my life til 5am laughin and nonstop ownin, rainbow six with it bein the most tactical shooter and having 2-8 hour clan matches, and counterstrike to me bein still the most played online shooter on pc.. its community always upholds itself, one reason why all these games in my opinion have been so successful is they were birthed in a time period where lan was a necessity, not everyone had online access .. i remember having to go to my grandparents everynight to play online cause i didnt have broadband at my house, by lanning being such a neccessity it created such close communitys within all these games.
And also i believe by keeping it simple in the beginning and focusing on gameplay is one main reason why these games are so simple. as you can tell by the more complex they are making games it seems to lead them to their death, Rainbow six has fallen mainly because they have tried to keep up with the times and came up with a 3rd person pivot function that took the tactical aspects out of the game, Halo has made so much customization and extras that it seems that they have forgotten how to make great simple maps like longest, damnation, chillout, bloodgulch, lockout, battlecreek, midship, and more (yes i know they've have remade these maps, but honestly are they ever the same?), COD seems to have just went overboard to me.. its not longer a teambased game to me.. its become far to easy and i think its as arcadish as Cruising USA so it could become more user friendly so all audience could have a chance at being decent, and well i have not played the new badcompany 2 but when i played badcompany 1 my first thought is battlefield should stay on pc that its not meant for console, and still to this day I say counterstrike is still perfect accept for how the characters run like hunchbacks in source

but on to this game,, i think the only draw back it may have is keeping its simplicity... I'm just hoping the endless amount of personalization in this game does not bring it to its grave.

one complaint tho I do have is.. may sound hypocritical to what i just said but... i wish we didnt have a tattoo layout that we had to choose,,, with we could just take pieces and put them where we want...

The only things that will kill COD or Halo (or even Gears) is the companies that make them. Those titles have such a strong hold on a market segment already that it will take their own undoing to bring them down. Activision now is dealing with the fallout of the IW fiasco and that could lead to big damage for the COD series. When Bungie stops making Halo games that is the only thing that will stop those games and that is the same with Gears.

Brink won't be in the same neighborhood as those titles for sales, at least initially. I see it being able to sell like Borderlands did if it is marketed correctly. That game ended up in the 2M copy range and it sounds like a much more logical spacel than the 7-8M copy range for early sales that those other games can get. Like it or not a lot of what Brink does will rely on reviews and launch marketing.

gears of wars multiplayer is trash. the only good thing about the game is the campaign. CoD is destroying itself with all of the activision vs infinity ward bullcrap. also reach will be the last halo game. however reach and brink are coming out around the same time

Those franchises will still all sell many more millions than most games though just because of the names of the established IPs, slick marketing, fond memories of past titles, and hype. All your points only reiterate my statement. Those games will only stop selling and die if their producers mess them up or leave the IP behind. It won't be because some other game stomped them down. Other games alone won't put them under. Gears 2 multiplayer wasn't near great but the game still sold truckloads, and the next one will as well. With release still a year+ off people are already talking about it. Halo is 6 months away and people are drooling over every tidbit. The main game(s) in any game style needs to dethrone themselves in nearly all cases. Look how many "WoW killers" there have been so far, none have even made a dent in the 11.5 million people that game has playing. Until Blizzard messes up royally (not likely) or just back-burners the IP for a new product (probable) nothing is going to touch the juggernaut that is World or Warcraft. The FPS/3PS genres aren't much different

BF:BC2 is a huge budget game with amazing multiplayer and, thus far, better support. That hasn't killed COD, it may have dented it, but the majority of the recent damage to the COD brand was done by the Activision/IW itself by, splitting the franchise across 2 devs, not properly testing MW2 before release so it came out glitch and bug ridden, and now with the ongoing drama, infighting, and talent evacuation of the IW studios to Respawn Entertainment.

Games like Borderlands, Medal of Honor, Brink, etc will not kill COD or destroy Halo. They have to destroy themselves. Maybe a new IP can step up and stand along side of those but they aren't going to be destroyed without help from the people who make them.

the only reason those games got big in the first place was pure luck. there is a small chance that brink can get lucky too. i doubt it though
