Will you be able to Dragon Shout with your head chopped off?

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 2:10 am

So it seems you are going to be executed at the start of Skyrim or something along those lines. So I was thinking... what if Bethesda are going to surprise us and make it so we get our head cut off with an ax and then suddenly, we do some sort of impulsive dragon shout that reverses time and blasts everyone backwards? or something along those lines. Is it possible? Thoughts? :P

Esbern saves you before you are killed. We already know that.

I... do not think that is possible.
But it's quite the thought. I'd be very surprised, for sure.

True. But the question still stands. As in, Will you be able to Dragon Shout with your head chopped off in general?

And then AND THEN a DRAGON swooooopsss down and picks your head clean off (again) and carries it to safety. There you do another shout that regenerates your body!!! And thus, DRAGON BORNE WAS BORN!!!!

But it... doesn't. Keyword is 'before'. If he saves you before you are killed then the question is irrelevant. But no you can't. You need vocal cords and a tongue to form words both of which are gone or broken in a beheading.

I believe it was mentioned in one of the many magazine articles, and in the gameinformer video "The Sounds of Skyrim". I could very well be wrong.

Check the GI hub, I KNOW it was in their Skyrim article but I can't link to screens. I can say "Google Skyrim beginning" though, although I don't know if it will get you results you want.

It depends whether it actually requires you to shout, or otherwise make noise, or whether mouth movements will do. You have a few moments of consciousness once you're beheaded - but presumably if you could dragonshout after being beheaded you would have done it *before* being beheaded.

If we were to make the ridiculous assumption that you could live with your head seperate from your body apart from basic nerve impulses, then the correct question would be "Can we dragon shout with our body chopped off" as the head is the part that is required for shouting, or, you know, thought.

Shouting is no way to get ahead in the world. But I suppose it depends where the plot is headed.

lol indeed. but we already know Dragonish (the language of the dragon shouts) is an actual spoken language, as shown in Daggerfall. So with cut vocal cords and no lungs to give you air (and no, you can't draw air through the throat hole, you need lungs to breath, not a mouth. If someone can't breath due to a collapsed airway they will get a tube stuck in their trachea to allow oxygen) you are kind of screwed.

Good point, can't believe I forgot about the lungs issue.

I see what you did there...

Of course it would be pretty interesting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYnETOo3FLo) that you played as a severed head.

This, with out lungs you can't speak, so no dragonshouts for you.

Obviously, the player can't use dragon shouts after death. If you die, then that's it, you have to reload, I'm sure that won't change from past games, and if decapitations ever occur in Skyrim, I think you can safely assume that anyone who gets decapitated will die upon this occuring, so even if we ignore the fact that a severed head would not be able to speak, even if that severed head were somehow kept alive, due to lack of lungs, the player would not be able to use dragon shouts upon being decapitated as that would be a lethal wound. Thus, the question is silly, and we also already know the answer to it.

Not to mention the vocal cords would be severed most likely or at least damaged.
