Will you be able to see your legs?

Post » Wed Sep 21, 2011 12:53 pm

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but i'm new to the Forums.
In First Person, Will you be able to see your legs or body when you look down? It seemed in Oblivion you were just a floating head with arms.

And while i'm at it, would your arms in 1st person seem like they're actually part of the Game? For example your sword actually going through stuff, not looking like it never hit the object it just looks like it gets smaller comparing to what it hits.
sorry it's hard to explain the 2nd Question.

This doesn't bother me, not as long as we can play in 3rd person.

Go to my animation wish list topic and wish for it. :) It's already up there, but the more the merrier.

Oh the one thing that breaks immersion in FPS games for me (sometimes). I look down to admire some grass running through my toes... oh wait. What toes?
Perhaps someday in the future we will be more than a floating head with magically appearing arms. :|

No. And yeah there's been a considerable amount of topics on this. I personally dislike it fairly much so. Yes your a head with arms and you can't see your nose in the middle, torso, or legs in first person. Area where gameplay trumps realism.

On a sarcastic note while we're at it lets remove statistics and variable health. You can lunge your sword into the skull of anyone without a full faced helmet. We'll call it the "headshot."

If you have very hairy legs (you can't shave them in Skyrim because it's based on medieval setting) you maye be able to see the hairs on your legs :)

How would being able to see your body be detrimental to gameplay?

Edited that post btw.

For one I've disliked it in the rare examples it's been in. Two because clearly the detriment to gameplay is why I've never seen a fully realistic 1st person game where you see your legs and arms flail and you reach out to touch everything and wrap your hands around everything realistically.

Your playing one of the most anti-realism genres of game in the first place. Statistics derived(Plus roleplay) RPG then there's the topical genre of fantasy. Lop on that realism and your going a bit overboard.

Furthermore all that 1st person realism takes up viewing space and the sound animation needed for flailing arms when walking though not always.

And a glimpse of your nose and then seeing your lip and facial features like a mustache or beard when looking down too. And if you have long hair it should show at the top of the screen too.

All take away from the actual world, gameplay, and screen real state.

Well you might suggest just legs, torso, and arms or maybe just legs. But then why take a subpar route if even that isn't "realistic"?

Alright people, this is the explanation I gave in one of the other one billion topics that mentioned this very same question:
I'll provide a constructive explanation, one that people must accept (as I developed several games in the past myself):
I think of two waysyou can implement such a feature:

The first would be to make another model (just like what they're doing right now) for first person view. The model should have arms (obviously), chest and legs.
What will we have to do in order to implement seeing your arms, chest and legs in first person?
  • We will have to retexture the entire model for close up views. Low-res textures don't look good up close.
  • We will have to locationalize each armor piece in the game accordingly to the new body mesh (just like what they're doing right now, except they're doing it only for hands.
  • We will have to retexture each armor piece. Like I said, low-res textures don't look good up close.
  • You will have to coordinate each armor with each other in the new body mesh and check for clipping issues.
  • Add new animations. You can't use the same animations that are used in third person view due to the fact that they won't look good in first person. They should be different. Also, it's a different model.
  • Don't forget there are TWO types of bodies: Heavy and light. Not to mention that there are 10 races. That's X10 the work.

And these are only the things I can draw from the top of my head.

Now the other way is simpler, but FULL of bugs and is hard to work with (I haven't seen any game using this system except for WoW, and it didn't REALLY have a first person view, just a first person camera):
  • You take the existing model in 3rd person and adjust it to the camera's view. Or the other way around. All the animations will stay the same, and the armors will be placed accordingly.
  • Problem is: You'll have to fix hundreds of tiny clipping issues. Also, equipment will look bad in first person with low-res textures.
  • Last problem with this method is this: the camera will not be positioned in an angle that makes sense, it will either be too far from the character or too high from it. If it's not, the model will pass through the camera, causing you to look inside the head/chest of the model, which is not recommended.
  • I'm sure there are more problems, but I'm too tired and can't think of more (just got back from work...)

So you see people, what you're asking here is too much. You can't expect that in a game this size, with so many armor variations and customization, that you'll be able to see your lower body.

Case closed. Sorry. Even if I would like to see it too.
NOTE: Head bobbing could be a nice feature to add, though....

AND DON'T IGNORE THIS COMMENT!!!

If you look down, I imagine you would. I mean, this feature is even in Halo: Reach. A game like TES should at least allow you to see your feet. lol

Given the camera will be placed inside your head, if your body still had been visible, you'd probably just end up looking right down your throat if you looked down :)

If you have a hairy fetish, you could be satisfied in Skyrim. As I stated, if you don't shave your legs in skyrim (you cant because it's medieval setting) and look down, you would be able to see the tips of the hair.

Halo reach and Mirror's edge are decent examples. Both done pretty effectively if you ask me.
