Will you change the difficulty if it gets a little to hard?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:25 am

Me and my friend were talking about this. He never changes the difficulty. He played the same fight over and over again on Mass Effect, because he didn't want to change the difficulty down a smooch.

I've only ever did this twice in oblivion, when I was fighting mankar Camoran, and when I was in the arena and fighting the altmer with grey aegis. Being a pure mage, these fights svcked hard. There was no way I could defeat them on default difficulty, so I turned it all the way down, killed them in one shot, then turned it back to normal for the rest of the game.

So, are you the stubborn type, or the guy who just wants to have fun?

No way I never do that because I like a challenge. Actually I also dont do it because i dont find many games to be difficult so of anything I'll be increasing the difficulty. I just hope they don't use the [censored] difficulty system from oblivion.

Mankar Camoran was impossible for me to kill on normal difficulty. The battle with him lasted an hour (with both of us healing) on normal difficulty when I was at level 30-something... at which point I just got sick of it and turned the difficulty down to be able to kill him. I like to stay on normal difficulty, if I can, but when fun turns to frustration, I have no qualms about turning the difficulty down.

If it's hard to start with,i'll stick with it,and get used to it.Then eventually up the difficulty even more. I will not turn it down no matter how many times i'm on my arsecheeks. :)

Level-scaling works in mysteriously annoying ways. Level 35 Seti = crapload of health on Camoran coupled with his equally (in comparison to my own) impressive grasp of restoration magic. The result is that neither of us die but continue attacking and healing ourselves... resulting in a never-ending battle... except when our items break. My sword broke and if I can't deal enough damage with my sword, how could I do so without it? It's also not like Camoran has armor or a useful weapon to break, so the battle would just drag on. At that point, I turned down the difficulty and finished him off. It wasn't necessarily difficult so much as it was a stalemate between equally matched competitors and I don't have the patience of Gandalf. Neither one of us could deal enough damage to kill the other and both us healed throughout the whole battle using our endless supplies of magic (our magic regenerated quickly). I'm not going to fight a Balrog Camoran continuously for days.

In a more linear game I might, but given the nature of Skyrim's open world, no. There's always some way to survive or escape, and if it comes at a massive cost of resources (consumed potions, damaged armour, etc) that's just another, fun dimension to progressing my character.

If it's only a little hard I might turn the difficulty up.

This.

I was a pure mage (level 32), and my attacks weren't doing squat, if I'm right, he had spell absorption and spell reflection, and that made him a pain in the [censored].

I tried 5 times to defeat him, after throwing my controller in rage, I just set it to extra easy, then killed him.

There really was no way for me to defeat him. I had to defeat him or I couldn't do anything else in the game.

There isn't always a way to run or fight, sometimes you just end up in a crappy situation.

If I simply cannot win in any way the situation, which usually was the case in OB, I will change the difficulty to the easiest, kill the thing and be over it and change back. If you simply don't stand a chnace there is no point in trying 100 times to do it. I'm not talking about dragon fights though, they will always be hard, not impossible, but very hard. There you have a chnace to win. Mountain lions in melee in OB at hardest difficulty could not be beaten without epic tools of mass destruction, so if I don't have those weapons of mass destruction in Skyrim in a similar situation, I'm going to change the difficulty. Or run away. Aaaaaaa

Note: I usually played OB on 60-70% difficulty, which in SI for example meant endless battles with the.. the.. What were those.. the.. umm.. zondierts? rebels.. no. Well the boss level mania wizards in blue robes. You know.

You and I think alike.

If I'm not having fun, then I'll change the difficulty, then set it back when I have whatever I need done done.

Goes up a notch or two every few levels in OB probably do the same here, not too far if they still have the enemies turn into sponges system. If things get hard, will just have to play more carefully.

You would rather let your brain slip into a coma, rather than challenge/use it? :)

Yeah, you're right. I play on PC and save often, so I guess I take for granted being able to work-around such things in different ways. I usually forget the difficulty slider's even there.

I used to lower the difficulty on oblivion on my first few characters because i was a noob and the game would get a lot harder for me beacause of the scaling and me not knowing what I was doing :)

Now I just keep it at normal even though it is annoying that I have tons of health but the enemies take 20 hits to kill. I hope that skyrim higher difficulty just makes the enemies hit harder and more plentiful instead of taking a ridiculous amount of damage and insta killing me

Ahh i see I never used magick much so difficulty could vary on playstyle too I suppose (and I enjoyed your balrog comparison :) )

I did in Oblivion because enemies became damage sponges at higher levels. In Fallout I kept it at normal and died a hell of a lot to raiders with combat shotguns, eventually I got used to it and now I play it at VH (There are about 3 bullet sponging enemies in FO3). Hopefully it will be the same case with Skyrim, I don't want to face bullet sponges all the time at high levels.

I never change the difficulty, I think normal difficulty is the most balanced one.

And I also could defeat Mankar Camoran on normal difficulty (although it was very hard).

I use mostly melee playstyles, but the magic part was just both of us using restoration magic to recover. My sword just couldn't do enough to kill him before he could heal and his spells, similarly, couldn't kill me before I could heal.

I dont ever turn the difficulty down because its just no fun if you kill them to easy i like a challenge and turning the difficulty down to kill someone to me feels like cheating even though its not.
