Will you die if horses aren't announced?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:08 am

Right, so the dragon can swoop down and grab both of you at once. Brilliant approach!

And you're making that assumption based on...? We know they can grab and swoop down, we don't know if it's possible to escape them or out-trick them. And also, think mounted combat.

It would have to be a very slow dragon for you to have even the slightest chance at escaping.

Look at the comment above.

Yes I'm ready to die for this noble cause

not
I bet horses are in as mounts and we'll hear about it later. They just don't want to give us all the info at once.

To be honest I really couldn't care if horses are in-game or not. Realistically they'd be little practical use in some of the really rugged terrain we're seeing. However, since this is a fantasy setting I'd like to see mounts of some sort, but preferably other types of creatures. Horses for me seem mundane and generic, but that's just a personal opinion.

I'm pretty sure that we'll at least see them as beasts of burden anyway. BIG plow horses. BIG meal. For BIG orc heroes.

I ignored the second option even though I would want them done well or not at all because there's no F'n way they will be done badly. Todd already said they were lookin ok right now, I see no reason for them to suddenly stop working right. He wouldn't have said that if the animations were looking poor or if they controlled badly, plus, if they can animate dragons well and other animals in the game world, such as mammoths, wolves, sabertooth tigers, etc., I see no reason whatsoever for horses to animate poorly or for them not to make it in the into the game as mounts. Therefore, I want them in as mounts and I fully expect them to animate well, control well, and to make it into the game as mounts and be at least of the same quality as those found in Red Dead Redemption. I also expect there will be an announcement by E3.

I never really used a horse anyway. the only one I used was shadowmere, because if you bought a horse, it would die way to easily. If there isn't a horse in Skyrim that can't die, then I am definitely not going to use a horse. Waste of my hard looted, and earned gold. And since there is probably not going to be a gold glitch, I am going to have to finally use my gold smartly.... :sadvaultboy:

Step 1. try to outrun dragon on horse step 2.realize its failing and get off the horse step 3. abandon said horse so the dragon can eat it step 4.....profit

Why would you want to be riding a horse when there are dragons about? That would be like painting a bulls eye on your forehead during an archery competition.

Good point! Horses are often depicted as being one of the main prey animals of dragons next to deer & livestock (sheep, cows, pigs).
I could see a scene where you're riding you're horse through the valley, and you suddenly get knocked down by a swooping dragon. You're horse bleats a sound of terror, eyes rolling. The dragon sweeps back around through the air and dives back towards you again, roaring. Just as you think you're dead meat, you open you're eyes to find the dragon is gone. So is the horse. You get up to scan the sky, seeing the dragon flying towards the mountains. You're horse hangs limply from it's claws, like a rabbit in the talons of a hawk... it's going to be a long walk home.

That sounds awesome to me, and svcky... yes, but still awesome!!! I definitely want it in and I don't expect a dragon to attack all the time JUST because you're on a horse. Todd says they ignore you sometimes and you're on their prey menu too.

I like the idea of horses in-game, but I also realize that all of us do not see the same "use" for them.

I enjoyed seeing my Oblivion character riding her horse, and took a few screens ro remember the moments. I regarded horses to be pretty much a pet type luxury.

I used horses in Oblvion because I liked horses, not because they were practical in that game.

Even though I would like horses in the game, I am not sure about other mounts.

http://traumwerk.stanford.edu/archaeolog/hannibal3.jpg as like in Hannibal, maybe, but I am not really into riding lions and tigers and bears, oh my.

The avatar I have used in TES for years shows an individual fighting from a horse. Is the idea of the implementation of mounted combat one of the things Beth. is considering? It is not a must for me, but others would really like it. I will have to experience the game world to adequately evaluate the concept.

With regard to having horses in game even if we don't ride them...I'd say yes...aesthetics, carts, carriages, pack animals, and etc, although oxen could perform similar tasks.

Won't care, definitely don't want the half-assed and awkward horse riding of oblivion, and Skyrim isn't the sort of place I'd expect horses are great for anyway as it's a lot of mountainous and snowy terrain I'm assuming.

Hannibal took his army, which included thousand of calvary over the alps. Besides much of SR will not be mountainous anyway.

I want mounts for world realism, people use horses to get around. Seeing someone on horseback in OB just made the world that tiny bit more believable. Thats the main reason I want them in and as mounts. For npcs to ride them.

Basically, horses as mounts & workhorses would be good. Horses as background, not really. If horses doesn't do anything more than the deer, no point.

I wouldn't say that there is no point, seen as I can't ride a horse in real life, but still admire their beauty.

Pretty much no point in a domesticated animal that is neither a pet or good for work. From a realistic standpoint, the people of Skyrim aren't going to waste time & resources on keeping animals around because they "look pretty". They'd probably eat them if they fell on hard times.
We're talking about hard people in a relatively harsh environment. With dragon raids that can happen at any time, useful resources of food would not likely be widely abundant.

1st question: No, not if done badly. It would do more harm than good then, and people would complain of how bad they are instead.

2nd question: No, because if they were in but I could not ride them... then it would feel like such a tease for me. It would annoy me. It would be like if you had this really tasty-looking pie on your table, while you wouldn't somehow be able to eat it.

If done good though, of course I'd love horses. I'm really looking forward to seeing them... if they are in.

Horses can plow fields, carry loads, pull carriages, and taste good. More than enough reason to raise them.

I agree. Should they have not been mountable in Tes IV... then it would be fine to have them at least for aesthetics, but after 5 years on Earth and 200 years in the game, it would make no sense to lose this feature.

I want horses in, regardless. In Oblivion, they certainly weren't comparable to the horses you see now in games like Red Dead Redemption, but I don't care. I liked them in Oblivion and if I just saw Oblivion-style horses again, I'd be okay with that. I also could really care less about mounted combat, maybe because I can't recall ever playing a game with fun mounted combat, but I really don't see what the fuss is about that. When I get a horse, I don't get it to fight on it, I get it to ride on and to have an animal companion.

If they aren't mounts, I'd still like horses to be in the game, because that'd make it much easier to mod in the ability to mount them.

Of course, I totally agree.

Certainly won't die, but will be very, very disappointed. They were my main source of travel in Oblivion.

I rarely rode horses in oblivion, so i picked the second one. But if they can do them really well that would be cool.

I really wouldn't worry about horses. I'm fairly certain they'll be in the game. Todd has said on a few occasions that they would like to include horses, and in one interview said "they're looking good at the moment." I have every confidence that Bethesda can pull it off, and are already well on the way to doing so. Their reluctance to confirm them at this stage is merely because they're not quite ready, and if they did have to pull them out for some unexpected reason they don't want hordes of angry fans asking why they said they were in when they're not - much as happened when they confirmed Radiant AI for Oblivion too soon.

I could deal with no horses at all or horses for everyone. It would svck to have mounted guards as long as the player can't ride.
One thing I think is a must is seeing horses doing more work this time, with nice animations: pulling the carriages, ploughing the fields, eating, drinking, ect.

consithering there will be no atletics making me run faster on foot than on horse, i think horses will be more usefull all around.

i hope they have much better controls this time around, that we have at least some mount and blade action.

ither way they should be there as a creature tipe, no matter what.

My statement was based on the opinion (not mine) that horses would be good to have in game even if they stand around doing nothing and having no impact other than something to look at.
If horses are just a visual touch in the game without being used by NPCs at the very least, it would be a waste of time leaving them in except as a file for modders to develop.

I wouldn't die but, I'd be aggravated. I couldn't be without my horse in Oblivion, let alone seeing over the lengthy grass in 1st person (not a fan of 3rd person). Getting (walking/running) up mountains hills was nearly impossible without one. However, I didn't enjoy everything and it's mother aggroing to my horse. I think I've bought 3 horses so far in a 60+ hour play-through 'cause of it. Which isn't much really but, it's still annoying.

I'd hope Skyrim wouldn't be as stale as just horses though. Hopefully we'll have some other types of mounts as well.

If no mounts. Then yeah, most likely not going to play it, sadly. It's that important to me. :P
