Will you Fast Travel?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:28 am

I'm sceptical of anyone who suggests they'll never use it. I'll never be able to prove it but I'm willing to bet that anyone will fast travel between two points if the alternative is to trek over, through and around mountains for an hour, after twenty hours of game play, to pass a message onto an npc.

It's like saying you would play the sims game and everyday your sim went off to work and left the house empty, you sat and watched the screen in the default time because you felt fast forward was cheating.

aIt's feature by design, it's not cheating.

Just because you find it impossible to enjoy doesn't mean others feel the same.

It doesn't have to be cheating for somebody to not want to use it. I personally feel it cheapens the experience, for me. So, no, I'm not lying when I say I won't use it.

And if it takes you an hour real time to get ANYWHERE in the game, your doing it wrong (that is unless your searching for something).

Really, now that we have carriages I know for sure I won't be using fast travel. I almost managed this in Oblivion, in Skyrim it must be way easier with all those handcrafted goodies.

It's always so exiting and realistic to decide not to use the map to fast travel but simply stick to walking and carriages to get from town to town. I always decide not to use the map to fast travel when i begin a TES game, but after walking past the same area for the 10'th time i usually change my mind and start using the map. In oblivion i did this rather quickly because i got sick of walking through the never ending forest that looked the same everywhere and fighting creatures on my way there. I don't have any problem with combat, but i do with the combat in Oblivion, it was plain boring then.

If they've fixed the combat system to be fun and the environment to be new and gorgeous then i'll stick to not using the map to fast travel :).

fair enough with the carriage as a potentially more immersive alternative to fast travel (magic map style).

I was trying to reference, without reference, the fighters guild quest where you had to essentially travel the length of the map several times to basically pass on a message. maybe there were some people who enjoyed doing that without the fast travel but I'm reasonably confident most people eventually used fast travel.

I generally try to do as much as I can whilst I'm in one area in game before I make the trek to another city. In Oblivion they didn't really think about this, and just make quests completely with fast travel in mind. I'm hoping Skyrim will be different, and even if it isn't it seems like they're going to have a lot for you to do while you travel anyways.

I agree with this whole heartedly. It is certainly my preference not to use fast travel however I am simply inclined to when it seems necessary by design.

No more fast travel, I used it in oblivion in my 2nd and 3rd play through quite often, but I prefer this carriage thing if it's like RdR it's kinda cool :goodjob:

Yeah I know what you mean, it sometimes seems like it will come in handy. Just to me it feels better to just stick it out because in the end it feels more rewarding. It's probably the first mod I'm going to DL, or try to make for Skyrim is to remove the fast-travel, and probably make the carriages more expensive.

I'll use the carriages. No magical map teleportation for me.

All the time.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with it in Oblivion or FO3. In order to fast travel anywhere, you need to have walked there first. So the whole "but then you don't explore!" thing doesn't really fly with me.

All skipping fast travel does is make you waste extra time walking over empty ground that you've already searched/cleared of enemies/harvested of resources.

(This is not to say I don't take the time to enjoy the scenery. But there's always new places to go, why keep trudging through the same old places? :) )

Edit: I would not mind if there was a chance of a "random encounter" interrupting your Fast Travel, like in Fallout 1.

Couldn't agree more. I always explore alot early on so i can fast travel to the spots i have quests for later on.

I managed it for a 300+ hour play-through; though I have to admit it often got a bit tedious, so for the following play-through I became a bit less absolute about it (and removed the mod that disabled fast-travel!) As a rule I still avoided it since I prefer to take the long route, but there were times such as with the oft-mentioned Fighters Guild quests where it could become very tedious to not use it.

In terms of which is right, I don't think that there is a more "noble" way of doing it (which is a daft concept anyway for a single-player game) but I think for their own benefit, players should try both for a while to see which they prefer.

I will use fast travel occasionally or bascially when ever I want. If I only have 15 minutes to play because I have to go out and take the kids somewhere I do not want to waste my time just walking somewhere if I don't want to, or if I know it is going to be uneventfull anyways.

There I times I like to walk, then other days, I just want to play and complete a quest. Then there are other days, I will walk up to a mages guild or go to the stables and then fast travel pretending I am using the mages guild system or coach or what ever. I like to think I have an imagination and when I am in the middle of no where and I don't feel like walking anymore I will fast travel pretending I either hitch hiked from passer buyers or picked up a coach from there.

Heck sometimes I will think I made a special camp fire and one of my servants or friend came and picked me up with my hoarse. Again I just use my imagination when I fast travel. :)

All the time.

It's like sleeping through a long car ride or flight - you nod off when you depart and wake up when you arrive.

I expect Bethesda is going to do what they did in Fallout 3 where you have to discover everything. I sure hope not since that was extremely annoying. Anyway, if its like Oblivion I will use fast travel alot. When I first start I am going to explore for a few hours so I am not going to use it then at least.

I'll use 'in game' fast travel things like the silt striders etc. but I probably won't use the magic map, personally it ruins immersion for me.

That's a terrible comparison.

You're playing and enjoying the game when not fast traveling. Watching the screen in Sims.. How is that at All relevant?

For me, it depends really on how much time I have to play at the time. if I have a whole day to do what I want, I'll happily walk around and enjoy the scenery. If I'm a little more pressed for time, then you bet your ass I'm gonna fast travel.
