Yeah, exactly. If I watch a foreign language film I'd rather watch it with subtitles than dubbing. Dubbing or cheap translation (in the case of a video game/animated film) usually ruins it.

It's not really about which language suits a game/film (e.g. there's no reason why German should sound bad in the context of Skyrim), it's about the standard of acting. If you're watching a French film, for example, you're watching some talented actors on screen and having a terrible English speaking actor talking over the top of it. Even if it's a good actor, they're usually working from a translation so therefore missing some nuances of the original dialogue.

I'm definitely going to play it in Dragontongue.

I refuse to even watch the German trailer! That would ruin it.

I'll definitely play Skyrim in English. I don't want to miss out on all the cool voice actors Bethesda will no doubt have hired for the game.

It surprised me that the English version of Oblivion was kinda difficult to get in Germany. I think that even amazon.de did not have an English version on sale... same for Fallout 3...

But I WILL play TESV in English even if I have to go to England just to get it!!!

I'll be playing the English language version, dubbed stuff is usually terrible and besides, as others have posted, it most likely won't be translated into my own langauge and my English is pretty good anyway.

Eventually you don't notice and you don't miss things going on either. You read and see at the same time without thinking about reading. I always turn subtitles on because I live next to an airport. People will naturally just pause talking as if the world comes to a stand still when planes go over the house... then resume as if nothing happened when the loud noise is gone. The subtitles help to read without issue when a particularly loud plane goes by. (This doesn't annoy me since I grew up here.)

The only exception to the whole "I don't notice the subtitles" thing is if they mess up and the subtitles don't match the dialog. Then it stands out horribly.

Holy crap that does sound horrible, all of the epicness that gave me goose bumps is out of it in German.

As English is my first language I take my leave!

i think the language for excellence on Rol games is the english, plus the quality of the text and voices are not the same in other tounge.
But defintely i will play TES V in spanish.

I try to listen everything in it's native language, anime in jap for example, unless I actually feel the dubbed are better than the original (The Witcher for example, I largely prefer the english actors over the original ones). I end up lsitening to english 99% of the time though :shrug: I totally hate dubbed since they are terrible in the vast majority of cases...

Actually, i might even agree with you on this one. But the game would have to be designed only for this particular langage or it would sound clumsy and dumb. Seeing as finnish could suit quite well in the harsh environments of Skyrim.
But then again who would make video games in finnish.. So, i would never play Skyrim on any other language than it was intended to.

Well, that's where the "Interpretation" part of "Translation and interpretation" goes in. It's not about translating all the stuff literally (that's how a translation turns dumb), but interpretating what you want to say, and then translating it into the best output possible for the destination language. Expressions are the best example of that...most literal translations of an expression would make no sense, because it was culturally designed to be understood only by the people of the same country. An example of that would be:

"Se va a liar gorda" ---(Literal translation into english)---> "It's gonna turn fat"

...when what it really means is:

"There's gonna be a lot of problems in there soon"

Of course, "Se va a liar gorda" is kinda slang in spanish. Surely there will be some slang expression in english with the same meaning, which is the one that should be used in this case.

I would like to play it in Spanish because that's my first language. I have played both Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 in Spanish and it's freaking awesome. I'd also like to play it in German because I've been trying to learn it for so long but I just don't get to watch/play many films/games in German.

English hands down. I don't want to miss anything from the original feel in translation.

Wther it is a book, movie or a game it can only really be made for one language.

That's not what I meant....a book/game/whatever can be nicely translated into another language, but only if the "interpretation" part of the translation is respected.

I've played a lot of dubbed games that were good because they were translated & interpretated nicely, and (for example) I laughed a lot (in the good sense of the word) when there was a joke that made sense both in spanish and in the context of the game, because it was correctly interpretated (or "ported") from the english meaning to the spanish meaning.

i tried playing AC2 in my native language (norwegian) and though it was only the texts it was pretty crappy and became lame.

english ofc, there is no dutch and if there was dutch it would be stupid, played a game once with dutch voiceover's once (Harry potter and phelophers stone), and HP's voice was in the dutch spoken version of the movie actually Ron Weasley, that's it I thought no more dutch voices for me in games, I play it in english and they should only release it in english.

We Dutchman all learn quite alot of english for a non-english country and we we go to like spain or something they can't speak english nearly as good as we can, if things would just not be translated to other languages then english more people would learn to speak english.

The game is not even made in english it is made in american, and im almost certain the subtitles will contain the american (wrong) spelling.. more annoying than any dutch / german version... a version that claims to be english when its not

Nay, i will play it its my native language: Spanish, or castellan, if you want. This may be the first time that TES has spanish voices , OB was only dubbed and MW only in english...being Fallout 3 the first ones with Spanish Voices, i must play this in my language

I'm danish so I don't have much choice. Besides even if I had, I would never choose danish. i think I'd have a hard time taking it seriously honestly
