Will you purchase a Player's Guide along with Skyrim?

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:40 pm

I never used any of those guides. I almost consider it cheating.

OK. Whether or not I use it, is not the point for me though. I want to support BETHESDA FOR EVERYTHING! I will buy the COLLECTOR'S EDITION GUIDE. It will look good with my collection of guides. Although I will play the fu** out of this game, then I will use the guide to find stuff I havent after 5 playthroughs!

Yes. I just like to have it. I have the Oblivion one. Didn't use it as a cheat, because I liked being ingorant of what's in the world.
Later,if after trying soemthing over and over, it helped me get 'unstuck'.
It's just nice to have an album of compiled maps, photos, and other data on a game that I love
I only have a book for Oblivion and Dragon Age: Origins.

I get what you mean but its easier to have a book beside you than a pc, also I dunno what it is but I find the wiki very uninviting

Yes, having any item, NPC, location, and quest available at a single click sure is unappealing. Why do that when you can spend 25 bucks on a guide and thumb through it for 15 minutes anytime you need something :/

I'll be using the UESP, thank you very much.

I'm surprised at the amount of "No's". Thought more people would eat up anything they could on Skyrim.

I only paid $16.49 for the FNV guide on Amazon. It was something I just *couldn't* pass up so I got the Fallout 3 guide for about the same price. They won't be that low in the future...in fact, they'll be worth more I think because they're collectibles too. I don't have to look in it at first to play but it's there for later to use and enjoy. :)

Yes, I'll buy one with my game. I have enough will power to keep from using it until I need it.

I thought the guide for NV was one of the WORST examples of how a huge, sandbox game guide should be. It was completely unorganized, had loads of useless information (like different character classes YOU could create......STUPID!) and just had parts to it that were flat out wrong, let alone not very detailed. Whenever there was a question that the guide didnt answer, I simply went on wiki; searched what I was looking, and got the info immedietly. The person who wrote the NV seemed like he had never played a FO or TES game in my opinion.....thats just how he seemed. Like a big dummy trying to tell a pro how to play the game. About the ony organized and useful part of that guide was how it listed the weapons and their damage, as well as the armor and its stats. Other than that the poor organization made sure I rarely used it. All in all, this was one of the biggest wastes of money that I have participated in in a long time. This guide is the specific reason I will not buy any more. It was awful.

Online is such a better resource. Most importantly, you can SEARCH and the information gets updated.

As Dragonborn1 keeps stating, Collection.
There is more to owning the book than its functional use.
This is similar to that thread on digital vs. retail version of the game.

No. Those things ruin the sense of figuring it out for yourself... Also, Id rather enjoy conversing with my friends who play the game and asking them for help if needed...

Nope,If I really need to know something Uesp is my friend,or Google. Asking £15 For a guide when I can get my phone out and get the answer in under a min,They must be having a laugh....

I do accept, however, that the guide has it all ready, whereas Uesp etc has to be writen and added to,an edited,so...

You don't have to use it. I'm getting it because i'm going to get everything for Skyrim. Like the CE.

no, espcially since i have a PC i see no reason to get one because of two things
1. Alt+Tab pull up web browser look where to go
or
2. Gotoquest in Console ports me right to it when I really get bored (or doing MQ in oblivion gates)

No, I will not buy one. When I bought Oblivion they had a nice starters guide free at the store I bought it from. It was a 30-page booklet or something like that. It was a handy quick start guide and that was all I needed.

I would actually very much like Bethesda to make an Android/iPad app that would be an interactive map, a quick guide to set up a characters, and charts of all items. As a bonus it would be cool if in the game they put a seven digit (rune) code in each in game books, when you enter the code into the 'app' the in game books would be unlocked inside the app in an easy to read format. How cool would it be to have all the in game books on your tablet!!!

I freely give that idea to the development staff. BELIEVE ME BETHESDAH; YOU WILL MAKE AN EASY MILLION DOLLARS ON JUST THAT ONE APP!!!! And, if you don’t make it you will just lose all the money out to some FAQ-Kid would will make it.

Probably not, because I want the game to be relatively unexplained for me. I want to find everything out on my own

Player's guides are useless. Everything you need to know about the game is on the internet now.

This

But back in the 90s I was using physical guides for games.

I'll be honest, I was one of those guys that used to think that using a player's guide was an accepted form of cheating in video games. It wasn't until I was given an Oblivion player's guide on my second play through of the game that I realized all the little things I had missed the first time I had played. Sure enough, when Fallout 3 was released I picked up a players guide along with a copy of the game. But here I am once again in anticipation of upcoming Skyrim that I am faced with the decision again....A part of me thinks that a great deal of the fun comes from discovering the intricacies of the game on my own...but I also run the risk of missing out on certain details that the Player's Guide would provide.

Alas, I probably will play through the game on my own the first time and use the Player's Guide on my second play through. But I'm curious to hear your opinion on using Player's Guides with video games (in particular with Skyrim).

Whad'ya think?

Definatley not with TES. Most of the fun with TES is the discovery of something a guide would just tell you.

Yes, I'll almost certainly buy it with the game, on release day.

Particularly since the one for Oblivion from Prima was very well done.

However, I will try not to use it for the first one or few play throughs.

If there is an official one like The Morrowind Prophecies, I might get it. I would love it to be hard-cover and feature plenty of artwork. If this will be the case, I would buy it to cherish it, mainly. I would use it only when I really needed it.

Perhaps one like this should be included with the collectors edition.
