Will you purchase a Player's Guide along with Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:00 am

What about for collections sake?

If I'd ever get a player's/strategy guide, it would be for that reason. For TES games, the UESP has all the game info you could ever need, so I wouldn't need it for the info. Besides, I rarely look up things on the UESP anyway unless I have a problem with a quest or something, I don't want to spoil myself.

Heck no. I prefer finding things out myself, thank you very much. Once I've played through the game a few times, I start looking things up on the wiki, if I really feel like it.

And I WISH I could find an Oblivion Strategy Guide for an affordable price but the price on it because of its collectability is just too high for me. I'll get guides on release day now.

Unless your looking for a brand new copy to collect then Amazon has used Oblivion guides for $23.

I personally don't use strategy guides much. They can be useful and an interesting read, but after a $60 game purchase I'm not usually willing to put out $25-$30 more just for info I'll eventually find for free on the internet.

Thanks, Miden. I'll have to keep my eyes on those. I was looking for the GOTY edition in decent shape...complete hopefully, no missing maps or anything like that. Interesting to see the one going for $176.96. yikes. I only paid $16.49 for the FNV guide and it is so worth it to me. Thanks again. :)

Yes, the guides are good for helping you create and build a RP.

Hell no. With the new random quest system I question how useful a print guide would be. Internet will have much better info.

Probably not, because I want the game to be relatively unexplained for me. I want to find everything out on my own

No.

For one, I like to experience the game myself, and also because I am assuming that there is going to be a lot of questions asked once the game comes out, and they will be answered by people who know what to do. I'll just look at those!

I'll definitely buy a copy of the guide and make use of it in my playthroughs.
Not the mission walkthroughs in the guide, but the information tables and area maps. The paper map with Oblivion was so utterly useless in comparison to what was supplied with Morrowind, that using the maps in the Oblivion guide was essential.

Nope, for a couple reasons.

Leaving things unknown makes the next play more intersting

But mainly, I see much of what's in a player's guide as knowledge that should be in the rules or come with the game. I always feel like a glossy pamphlet is way to skimpy.

Then there's UESP as well.

Which is why I would never use the gameplay walkthroughs in the guide

Agreed wholeheartedly. It was this information in the Oblivion guide that is so heavily used. Why Bethesda skimps on this information in the manual beggars belief. Hell they could include it as a book in the CE and make the CE something WORTH having.

Then there's UESP as well.

Which is crafted from what players learn by playing the game, digging into the game in the editor, and referencing the guidebook.

Nope. Waste of money. Thats why we have wiki. I never "cheat" on my first or second playthrough anyway, so that will give time for Skyrim to get established on a wiki or UESP.

player guides are completely stupid. not only are they useless if they get something wrong which does happen, and just patching games changes certain aspects. i havent used one of those things in over a decade and its only gotten easier to find info on games on the interwebz. what boggles my mind is STEAM selling those spectacularly crappy prima game guides for $20 or more. ive seen them in stores and they are nothing compared to the wiki sites for most games that pop up days after release. gotta be pretty brain dead to buy the STEAM version.

i prefer finding stuff on my own. im a very thorough explorer so i usually find most everything anyways. after a few playthroughs i might take a peek at a 'list o weapons' online to see if i missed something.

I thought the Morrowind and Oblivion guides were very well written and entertaining in their own right.

Often while playing I did not have the luxury of devoting every waking hour to the game, and I would occasionally lose track of what I was doing in a given quest and get stuck - only then would I consult the guide to get me over the hump.

As ironic as it may seem, talking about a computer game, I'm old-fashioned and prefer ink on paper when it's available to me.

I'll get one because they're fun to read. But I usually don't use them, unless locating for hard to find things (looking at you Mario Galaxy 2 :stare: ).

Yes. HELL Yes, in fact.

I *could* use the wiki but you know what? When all you have is a desktop rig, you can't read the wiki when you're on the crapper.

No. Isn't that what this forum and the whole rest of the internet is for? I've never bought a player guide and I never will. I've rummaged through some of them years ago for games I liked and I saw nothing new. Most games now a days tell you what's going on in the game anyways.

OT but I have a Goty Oblivion guide I would be willing to part with. It was used maybe twice! I would have to check to see if it is missing anything. Let me know if you'd be interested. :)

On topic, I play through once without it and then I'll use the UESP for little details.

Lol! Im kind of relieved to be honest. I didnt know whether to take you seriously or what.

I LOVE the work Bethesda does, and I could only dream that they know just how much I appreciate them and their games. But Im sorry. I just wont buy guides as 'collectables' or games that I will never open....I just cant afford to do that. I think Bethesda would understand.
