Player's guides are useless. Everything you need to know about the game is on the internet now.

Agreed when there's a wiki why waste money on a guide book.

Maybe, but If I do get one, I won't look at it until I've played on my own for a while.

I dunno, I totally get the idea that you can get better, more accurate and more up to date information from the Internet

But I still like to have the paper guide to hand. Go figure. Perhaps I'm more of a luddite than I thought

Every new game, I think 'Oh, I won't bother with the guide, I'll go to the Wiki', but I end up buying it (albeit, usually for a knock down or second hand price from Amazon Marketplace). I've got Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas etc, and I feel sure I'll end up getting Skyrim

I'll prolly buy the guide right away, but I always limit myself to looking through the non-spoiler sections until I've played through the game at least twice, or I for some reason Get super stuck. I enjoy looking through weapon types and all the enemies in the game, but quests are a no no until I do them a couple times.

I will definetly get one for the collection. But probably only use it if I'm stuck or looking for something.

Hopefully there will be a collecters edition guide with a hard cover.

Personally, I wait to use it until my seconds or third playthrough. And even then, don't follow the book word for word. They give you a way past every mission but there's always your way of doing. Ya, I use it to find stuff I missed or if I'm really stuck on a part but I don't use it for everything, all the time.

No players guide for me.
ES games for me, you play a character. It's not about perfection or getting everything in one run. It's just about doing the best you can.

Heck no! Oblivion's guide was awful and beyond worthless as it was a waste of money. I doubt that will change as the publisher is almost certainly the same.

I'll be honest, I was one of those guys that used to think that using a player's guide was an accepted form of cheating in video games. It wasn't until I was given an Oblivion player's guide on my second play through of the game that I realized all the little things I had missed the first time I had played. Sure enough, when Fallout 3 was released I picked up a players guide along with a copy of the game. But here I am once again in anticipation of upcoming Skyrim that I am faced with the decision again....A part of me thinks that a great deal of the fun comes from discovering the intricacies of the game on my own...but I also run the risk of missing out on certain details that the Player's Guide would provide.

Alas, I probably will play through the game on my own the first time and use the Player's Guide on my second play through. But I'm curious to hear your opinion on using Player's Guides with video games (in particular with Skyrim).

Whad'ya think?

Buying the game to play it, not watch a movie. Likewise, I won't be reading the "script" you mention either. ;)

On a related tangent, we often get people harping for "the good old days" when games had longer playtimes. Maybe- just maybe- games would have longer playtimes again if people stopped paying extra money for a walkthrough on release day, hmmmmm?

I bought a guide for FF12 but I just used to read it on the toilet instead of while playing.

I usually use internet FAQ's if I have to. They're free. Guides are a a ripoff.

At the age of game specific Wikis and forums where game related information is readily available, the only logical reason to buy a Player's Guide is being obsessed with the franchise to the degree that you want to buy every product related to it.

Generally no, I don't get player's guides. My friend used to buy all the final fantasy ones and I do find that they explain basic concepts of the game that the game should have and those sections are worth it. I'd rather buy a actual game manual like they used to send with every game, because that is all I really want from the players guide. I haven't had that issue with elder scroll games, things are intuitive enough or explained enough in game I don't feel I need more for it.

no. theres no need, these forums all ways have all the info pretty much from day one. I bought one for oblivion but mostly used it for knowing the sigil stone effacts and stats as well as at what level types of armor and baddies popped up.

I always think that I will need a guide but I almost never end up using it. If it is a particularly exciting or immersive game, I forget that I even have the guide. I sorta think that with Role-playing games, part of the immersion comes from making decisions in the moment and dealing with the consequences, whatever they may be. Doing what a guide tells you kind of takes some of the mystery out of a game. And mystery is half the fun.

No I won't be reading a guide. I made that mistake with Morrowind. I felt like I knew too much.
I bought an Oblivion guide much later and barely look at it except for creature stats and the like.
No guide for FO3.
No guide for Skyrim. Absolutely not. No wiki. If I get stuck, I'll find my way through. Sweeter is the success doing it that way.
