Will you be using Right Hand Advantage, run and gun or VATS?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 1:26 am

Given that Fallout 4's shooting credentials will be much stronger,

will you be using Right Hand Advantage and soft cover (assuming that works) to snipe targets,

or do you prefer to run in guns a blazing?

(or are you sticking to VATS?)

If Right Hand Advantage is viable (using the fact that the gun is to the right of the body)

I'm tempted to use cover more than before.

At some point presumably I will be using the Advantage. Perhaps in a tough fight or if there's a fight I don't want to do (the odd raider here or there), but obviously we have to see how it works first. I do prefer the idea of more tactics, and I hope the focus on making the shooting fun means we'll have to use our brains a little bit in firefights.

I prefer to have the enemies come to me, easier to aim and you can use cover, cover worked in Fallout 3 however you was not shooting from the gun muzzle making the benefit limited.

Sometimes the enemy is behind cover or you face interlocking fire and you have to move in.

VAT for close distance and moving enemies.

even in fallout 3 when there was no cover system advantage, I still played it like it was a military shooter with all those elements. So yes I will be taking cover again and using it to my advantage. Makes the game more fun

Since my reaction time is for crap, I'll likely be using VATS in any frantic combat scenario. My preferred method would, of course, be sneak-attacks from range with a sniper rifle or close-up with a silent melee weapon or silenced pistol, where ~I~ control the pace of combat. My reflexes aren't what they used to be, and the few times I've tried to 'run and gun' I ended up wasting a TON of ammo and getting shot to hell and generally did not enjoy the experience.

I prefer short/mid range stealth approach with rapid fire as backup when that fails. So right now, silent semi auto with a bayonet, holosight/reddot and a full auto pistol as a sidearm.

Rambo Melee, Stealth Melee, and Stealth Ranged. I use VATS only for Deathclaws and Cazadors. When I'm detected playing Ranged I generally let my companions take care of the bastards because they have unlimited ammo.

My first character on any Fallout game tends to be a Rifleman/Marksman. Not necessarily a sniper, more of a character who thrives in mid range engagements.

I'll most likely be using the advantage and cover first, and then relying on VATS if the enemy were to charge me. I'll probably also use some mid range VATS once I get the appropriate perks for those engagements, as the killcams are ultra satisfying.

I'm interested to see how viable Run N Gun will be. With the improved fluidity of gunplay, it makes me wonder if the character will be more squishy consequentially.

It depends on A.I. While I use stealth in games that handle it well, Bethesda games usually don't. Nothing shatters the illusion more than sniping a raider and not getting any reaction at all from his two buddies that were standing next to him. Simply assaulting them from cover usually 'tells a better story', if you know what I mean. I'm not much of a run and gunner.

I am hoping cover plays a vital role as it should. Being exposed to fire should kill you quickly, good armor would obviously extend this time, but not by much. The exception being power armor, but even then you should not be needlessly exposing yourself to enemy fire if you can avoid it.

That being said, I will make extensive use of cover, attempting to engage at medium range via ambush(sneak in game terms). Once my cover is blown i will move from position to position, being careful to keep putting as many accurate rounds down range as possible and keep pressure on whatever I am engaging. Will be roleplaying as a soldier.

Hopefully collision boxes will hug the surfaces of cover in F4. I hate lining up what should be a good shot then "Oh no no!" says the corner of the building I'm standing behind, "No sneak attack critical for you!".

Cover worked as far as I know, one known exploit was to carry something like an oil drum or an body, this would block bullets.

Problem was that you had to expose most of your body to shoot.

In skyrim cover works well with bows and the low rate of fire then fighting other archers or mages. stay behind cover and draw bow then move out to shoot and move back again.

I'm gonna be using more grenades and mines than I have in the past. They've always been an after thought for me, but I want to really try and use them this time.

And then I'm more of a ranged shooter, but if it comes to close combat I'm definitely going in guns blazing! Shotguns, probably.

...right hand advantage? Is this some pro gamer term?

(Just ran into another one just last week.... never heard the word "Micro" used like it apparently is in Starcraft before. Whee, niche jargon!)

----

As for basic Fallout 3/NV playstyle.... I use stealth, cover, rampaging attack, and VATS at different times, as conditions warrant.

I just heard it myself, but I figured out it's meaning rather quickly since I'm familiar with shooters.

Essentially, most games use sole right handedness for the PC's, and if you ever fired a rifle, having a wall and corner to go around on your left while right handed gives a tactical advantage because you can get your gun out and around the corner before fully exposing yourself. Go around a corner to the right, and you expose your left side before you clear your gun from the wall.

Very few games allow for using the left hand/shoulder. The only recent game in my memory that allowed this was Red Dead Redemption, where you can switch hand/shoulders on the fly.

Forgive me- what is Right Hand Advantage? I don't play many shooters, so I don't know the terminology very well.

It refers to the fact your game character is most games hold the gun in there right hand, so if a game has a lean mechanic its advantageous to lean out of cover/around corners to the right so as little of you is exposed.

Why use cover when no one can see you?

(applies only to players that crawl through the entire game in perpetual crouch with the highest stealth skill they can get with the best stealth armor they can find or craft)

:)

I learned 'Right Hand Advantage' playing a ton of Mass Effect multiplayer.

Essentially it's standing behind a wall or soft cover so that only your gun (on your right hand), or more precisely the cross hairs, stick out and target the foe,

allowing you to shoot while providing a smaller target for the enemy to hit.

Doesn't work so well on the left corner of a wall because then your whole body is exposed !

I prefer to play 3rd person, so as long as the game deals with it in the right way, it's terrific.

And if I get into trouble I can duck right behind the cover.

This video shows 3rd person RHA well, though the principle is the same 1st person.

Is there a crouch button? I don't just mean a stealth button, but an actual crouch button to duck behind cover and such?
