Just watching the gameplay videos - windmills are indicated on the compass. So, why?

I think windmills will be wood chopping locations. In the trailer one of the NPC's is chopping wood by that windmill.

Aha. Yes, possibly wood chopping. They wouldn't be on the compass if they were just to look at. They will be functional somehow.

We need windmills on the compass because magic compasses get powers that allow the, to see where eograpjfical features are and since it isn't a real compass but a gamelokay mechanic we should be able to see windlmills.

That was probably coincidence. Windmills have nothing to do with woodcutting.

I think they will have the function as windmills. It may be a farfetched guess but...

Windmills are an incredibly powerful device in the world of Skyrim. The reason clouds move and weather is generated is due to these highly sophisticated devices that turn at incredible slow speeds. Contrary to common belief, these tools are not used to grind grain, rather, they are used to generate wind that will effectively pollute the air with highly dangerous gases that will potentially curb the Alduin invasion from occurring.

Maybe a windmill is just the icon for a small settlement or a farm?

No, I've checked the gameplay video - they point directly at windmills. There's several outside Whiterun.

They are for milling grain to use as a cooking ingredient.

...but this one's cooler.
