Window Lighting Mods....

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:14 am

I am trying to get an approximate idea of how many people use a window lighting mod like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7055.

The reason why is because I am revamping a town I built. When I originally built it there were no window lighting mods and I created my own timed window lighting system.

However, now I need to get an idea of whether to leave the system I have in or remove it as a waste of FPS. If the majority of people use window lighting mods then I can take mine out. If not many people do then I will expand my own system to encompass the expanded area of the town.

Yep, never used Texians but http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628 is pretty much an essential immersion addition these days and very popular

AWLS costs less! :P

(in terms of performance compared to window lighting systems such as Illumination Within, and Texian's IIRC.)

EDIT: If you use custom exterior meshes, then you'll still need your own lighting system to cover them (unless AWLS offers some sort of expansion capability, I don't know). Also, only AWLS is resource-specific instead of location-specific, so you'd still have to have your own lighting system for IW and Texian's users.

The vast majority of people use AWLS though, so I don't think you need to worry about that.

I thought AWLS came from Texain to being with , but, AWLS is now the standard. So if Meek has house that where based around Texian then should not the AWLS Tool work on them has well..

If she uses her own altered custom nifs for vanilla houses then AWLS will not work.

I use AWLS, one of the few 'beauty enhancements' I use. It simply looks fantastic and on my system it doesn't have any noticeable performance impact.

Possibly slightly pointless to add to existing overwhelming weight, but another for AWLS as well. I used Illumination Within at some point in the past, not sure if I've tried Texian's as well or not, but AWLS gave me what I wanted with no apparent impact on my framerate or stability.

I understood the Illumination Tool that comes with it was to make custom meshes work with AWLS?

Probably goes without saying - AWLS.

As far as I remember, Texian's is a mesh replacer and is more or less what gave rise to AWLS as an update for it.

For mods using custom buildings, it's not hard to make them AWLS-ready using the illumination tool provided on the AWLS Nexus entry.

For the lighting experience, day or night, good weather and bad, inside and out...

AWLS with a Cava Obscura, All Natural Weather and Immersive Interiors(Lights) for the total experience...

Don't leave the castle without it. (Or a brighter torch either!)

I use AWLS and Illumination Within!

Actually I'm really curious if anyone else does, and now I want to see a poll cataloging who uses one or the other or both. I hereby voice my disapproval with this poll!!!!!!

I know Brumbek does the same. I probably would if my laptop could handle IW.

Who said I wasn't doing that? I could be playing at 0.25 FPS with IW for all you know. :P

No, I actually play within the 5 to 15 FPS range. Which probably has something to do with my very low playtime... (one character since 2007, 24 hours, 20 min playtime, which doesn't include testing mods :shakehead:)

I just can't put myself on board with such a move, especially since OCR would invalidate all of the light source placements and I have tons of other mods that don't even have IW support of any kind. IW is obsolete for a reason :)

I'm playing on a fatty computer I built two years ago, and I get framerates like that often enough. Actually the worst is in cities... at night... I wonder why? :whistling: (actually, IW isn't the only culprit here--the actors with torches mod adds plenty of light sources too)

I'd regard it as obsolete as well if I didn't have vanilla cities. I'm sure I'll do Open and/or Better Cities in the future and at that point I'll have to say goodbye to IW, but until then my screenshots will be 0.0125% better due to light sources illuminating the areas of buildings around the windows they light up! It's so subtle only I notice it!

Actually there's always the chance I'll end up getting somewhere with the Lights 4 AWLS add-on idea, and I'm almost to the point where I can get started on the mod idea list I've got where it's unfortunately not the highest priority looooool

Like almost everyone else I too submitted my vote for AWLS. It, along with DropLitTorchesOBSE and a night-sky darkener (OC_darker_nights) were amongst the first, if one THE first, mods (as opposed to utilities like FastExit2) I ever installed. (I didn't purchase Oblivion until early 2009.) No, that's not quite right. I believe Inquisitors Palace was my very first installed mod, me having entered the Shivering Isles at level 3. At any rate, AWLS will likely find a home on any and all future Oblivion installations.

Wow, seems very clear what to do now. Thanks for your input every one.

I don't actually have any installed as I am often retexting house exteriors and interiors and since these illumination mods change or tweak vanilla meshes, any vanilla house mesh I alter, rename, package and upload will contain those changes to the windows.

Yeah I pretty much regard IW as an extra little bonus so long as you're okay with it only working with vanilla stuff and have the resources to run it. Arthmoor's right, it's basically obsolete, but in terms of visual quality having real light sources is preferable to solely using bright textures (for me of course, I can see maybe figuring that so much light is unrealistic, or just preferring the look of things with no light sources, but I think it adds depth to night-time scenes -- even if it's .0125%!)
