Windowed Mode Lag

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:02 pm

Hi all ;D

I've created a topic, complaining about a bug on Fallout 3, which the image was freezing, the sound goes on, and then, all the colors look like 8 bits, and I needed to restart my pc.

Ok, I fixed that playing on Windowed Mode (I'm using Maximized Window), but now, there is a very annoying thing.

When I played in Fullscreen (With the bug listened above), the game runned on 60FPS under 1280x1024, 2xAA, 4xAF, HDR, High Default Setting on my NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT XFX GDDR3 512MB
Now that I need to use Windowed Mode to be able to play the game, the game is running with 25FPS, under 1280x960, 2xAA (Tried with AA OFF, didn't worked), 4xAF, HDR (Tried Bloom and Off, both didn't worked), High Default Settings.

It's very strange that when I play with Windowed Mode, in a smaller resolution, when the game should increase my FPS, it's making it lower. When i'm on Washington DC, the game runs at 20FPS '-'

Here it is a screenshot of my FOMM loading list:

My PC Specifications:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 5600+ 2.91Ghz
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT XFX GDDR3 512MB
250HD
Windows XP SP3 32Bits

So you 'fixed' the fullscreen bug by playing in windowed mode and now you got low fps there. So you never solved the fullscreen bug, right?

If so: could it be that solving the fullscreen bug would also solve the low fps problem?

Are you sure all your video drivers are up to date?
Could it be that the fullscreen bug was caused by an overheating video card? (really not sure on this one tough :))

The Fullscreen bug i've neved fixed, everyone tells that the iNumHWThreads=2 tweak should work, but my pc is a Dual Core, not Quad Core like everyone wich the tweak have solved the problem.

Yes, if I could fix the Fullscreen bug, it would also fix the low fps problem, but there's no fix that worked for me in this bug '-'

My video drivers are 260.99, and I doubt it would be a problem with the video drivers, because some months ago, when I played Fallout 3 for the second time, the bug also happened, and in Fallout New Vegas, the same thing.

My Video Card has a overheat problem, wich would cause the games to lose a lot of FPS for 10 seconds or more, but i'm using a ventilator next to the PC, and the problem have been solved. And also, only in Fallout 3 that i have this problem of slow FPS on Windowed Mode, and good fps on Fullscreen... All the other games that I have here, on Windowed Mode, the FPS climbs '-'

So... Any fix for any of those two problems?

1 - Windowed mode lag
OR
2 - The game freezes, sound goes on, colors go to 8-bits, and then I need to reboot my pc. And I have a Dual Core Processor, so, the iNumHWThreads=2 didn't worked for me.

I have the same issues, need to run in windowed mode to keep from crashing constantly, and performance is not as good as full screen mode. As far as full screen mode, I've found that the change to 8 bit color forcing a reboot can be avoided by not playing the game in the same resolution as the desktop. If you use a different resolution when it crashes at least it will kick you back to a working desktop. Not much help I know but at this point I doubt anyone is ever going to get to the root of the problem with this game. Just hope next time you upgrade your computer you can finally come back and play this game without all the annoying crashes.

Thanks ;D, i'll test playing the game on another resolution then.

I'm going to upgrade my pc in the end of January, get a NVIDIA GTS450, etc etc, let's hope that with a new pc, I can play without problems

Well...

Tried playing on Fullscreen with those resolutions:

1280x1024 - Crash
1280x960 - Crash
1024x768 - Crash
800x600 - Crash

...

I can play on Windowed Mode, but with a very annoying lag =/

I didn't mean to imply that changing resolutions would stop the crashes, just that when it crashed it would not revert the desktop to 8 bit color and require a reset of the computer. Seems a symptom of the display driver crashing and it can't reload unless it has the desktop in a different resolution. With some drivers I was able to refresh the display driver using riva tuner to restore the desktop color, but it doesn't do anything to fix the crashing.
