windows 7 64 bit compatability with MGE

Post » Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:51 am

I've previously used MGE on windows 7 32 bit beta for a while now, however with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, its a bit different. I've done everything right, though it keeps crashing on startup, I been using mostly the original files of mge3.8-SVN_rev-0118 latest version.

I don't really see anything on the download site insisting which is compatable with windows either 32 bit or 64 bit, mostly just showing problems with video cards drivers and whatnot. if you're a 64 bit user, and have morrowind graphic extender, please please give me related or exact link to any drivers, dll, or directx redist files, the sooner I get this overwith the sooner I can get back into doing great projects.

PS I have everything that makes MGE at it's best with 32 bit OS, ect, motion blur, DOF, SSAO, complicated stuff. I just wish to get MGE working correctly, I know for a fact there's a user out there with 64 bit using MGE.

Much appreciated!

-solidfire, thanks!

Hint:.Net is installed in 7. Your problem is most likely the registry related error, which fixes by running Morrowind.exe as an administrator.

I find it strange how a lot of people seem to have problems with MGE on Win 7. I recently installed W7 64bit and morrowind and MGE all installed without problems. It's weird. I didn't do anything like what people recommend, i just copied MGE into the folder, with the patches and whatnot and it just worked. No setting privileges or anything

Are you an admin, what's your UAC condition?

There is your answer. In my new laptop I decided to go with UAC. I last only one month. At first it was good when I was the only user. Then I decided to help another users trouble, and created a second user. This changed everything in the admin account. Even after deleting the new user, admin account behaved strangely. So I disabled the UAC, everything is fine since. Maybe if I turn it back on, it can fix itself but no need really. I mostly run legacy software, and software that needs admin level anyway.

actually morrowind is fine, though MGE itself just crashes, but I'll see what I can do with administrative settings. I've been to morrowind graphic extender thread, though, but I can't really spot which problem I'm having exactly, so that would make it hard to find what I need.

*edit*

http://clip2net.com/clip/m14405/1267423625-clip-38kb.png I tried running as admin, it still crashes. there must be something missing or maybe I need a different version of MGE though, built for 64 bit?

I'm going to download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)

hopefully that would fix all my problems with MGE.

scratch that, I think I needed Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) instead, I faintly remember downloading the 2005 version.

Solid, as I noted 7 has .net already. :)

But you can make sure you have VC++ 2008 redistributable and directx 9(Links in OP on MGE thread). But I am assuming the problem is with admin priviligies. To fix it, first run Morrowind without MGE and change your resolution. To do this correctly, you have to run Morrowind as administrator. (Right-click and run as administrator.) After that MGEgui, when run as administrator, will run too.

Edit: Actually, when I think about that, this is actually a Morrowind Hardware&Software problem. It has nothing to do with MGE. From my experiments, Morrowind plays fine, but when you rerun Morrowind, the resolution settings revert to previous unless if you run it as admin so it can save resolution in registry. MGE will run OK even without admin privileges, and nicely prompt that it can't write registry without admin privileges, if you try to set a resolution. To fix this, you run MGEgui as an admin too. My suggestion is code patch to change storing resolution in morrowind.ini instead of registry. Because windows 7 doesn't let applications to set registry unless they are installers(and admin) and wants applications to store application specific configurations in documents folder. I'll give that a try, I'll let you know if problem continues, thanks! though first thing I did on this computer is remove "admin permission" in control pannel, as it always causes problems.

If the above doesn't fix your problem try the instructions at the below site on your Morrowind directory.

It is like shooting in the dark, let me help:

Here for advanced troubleshooting:
Run regedit.exe and search for Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind registry keys:
Mine is here in 7 x64:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind

When Morrowind is first installed under this key it is almost empty and necessary registry settings as resolution is not set.

If you run Morrowind Launcher as an admin and set a resolution, the missing keys should be created and it will look like this..

"Installed Path"="C:\\Bethesda Softworks\\Morrowind""Screen Width"=dword:00000556"Screen Height"=dword:00000300"Screen Depth"=dword:00000020"Backbuffers"=dword:00000001"Multisamples"=dword:00000000"Fullscreen"=hex:01..........

Play around until they are created.

And additionally I think you have to run Morrowind.exe too for "Fullscreen" key to be set.

where exactly is regedit.exe?

I always play morrowind at full screen, my screen resolution was set while I was testing morrowind for the first time before i started installing MGE, now MGE is a huge blockage now.

have you seen these popups with windows 7 telling me " this program isn't compatable blah blah blah, would you like to check online for compatability?" which gets annoying after every install and cancel I do.

possible problem?

this was only seen while trying to run morrowind with the nonfunctional MGE, so I guess its showing the problem... ?

OK!

I must warn you regedit is for advanced troubleshooting. We are going to look only, not edit anything!!!

Click start and type
regedit.exe

or windows key+r will work too.

Browse to Morrowind key, it is in my above post, and check if the settings are there or not.

I've just directed a user to directx installation in MGE thread. <_< You should have read MGE thread and I should have not posted here. (But I can't help myself!:P)

make sure to use DXSETUP.EXE to finish installation after unpacking.

*snip*

ok, sorry... its the third time I've downloaded that same directx 9 file, that one isn't fixing the problem either...

I don't know.. I feel like I should reinstall windows or simply give up MGE. :/ which I really don't want to.

honestly I think my problem is, it ask for an option to extract the file to a spacific location, which is... blank. and irritatably, I can't figure out where. I'm going to try to find an auto installer for this directx feb2010 redistributable file.

It is not that hard.
when blank path comes, type:
c:\gotohellMS

after unpacking browse to that folder and run DXSETUP.EXE. It is very simple.

This is Microsoft trying to move on I guess, by not including Directx 9 with their newer OSes. Do you know I am trying to setup a virtual OS just to patch an old game of mine right now? No 16-bit application support for Windows 7(and Vista)...

Actually Direct X 9 support is part of Vista and Windows 7 but they changed the file structure of Direct X in Direct X 10 and broke compatibility with programs looking for the files. If the program doesn't search for the specific files then it would work.

I didn't see it in my scan above but Vtastek once had me run the Morrowind Launcher one time with admin privileges and that made MGE able to run and stop crashing.

But he is right for max resolution of Morrowind I now have to run the morrowind exe as admin.

And it's likely that Windows 7 will be the last Microsoft OS to offer 32-bit support. If not, Windows 8 definitely will; you can bet on it.

Since alot of people are missing this simple step, I'll add that to the MGE OP regarding DirectX.

Next time you have an MGE related problem, please post in the current MGE thread. Thanks. -_-
