Windows Explorer 9

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:08 am

Well I downloaded it thinking it would be great, and so far I don't like it. Some of the icons are small, now the favorites is on the right (I am use to it on the left) and it seems so small, I am waiting for the Excorsist to jump out at me when I go there.

Also when clicking on a link someone gives like for pictures here on the BSF, a new window opens up just like the old way, but the main browser I was using goes to it as well? Why? If the main window does it (I don't want it to) then why bother opening a new window as well? So far I don't see anything new I like that Windows Explorer 9 has to offer.

So what is so good about it? Is there a way so my main screen stays where it is and doesn't go to the new link AND opens a new window that goes to the same link.

I tried the new Firefox that someone mentioned already. I guess I am so use to using Microsoft that I can't bother using another browser.

So what do you guys and gals thing about the new Explorer 9 for those who have used it.

I started using Chrome and I find it's a little weird to switch from IE, but overall a much better browser. I would encourage you to not use IE anymore, I don't know specifics but there's aparrently a lot of problems with it.

I love Internet Explorer 9, the radically different UI has done wonders for me getting people to finally stop using Internet Explorer :P

I'll say this: whoever thought putting tabs on the same line as the URL bar was a good idea is a bloody idiot. It makes it look so incredibly cramped it isn't even funny.

There's a Windows Explorer 9? Didn't think they had updates or numbered them.

And you're better off using any other browser rather than IE (be it Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.)

Lynx, W3m, Links...

Seriously, you're better off with one of them, except for the limited (i.e. non existent :P) graphical capabilities.

EDIT: I usually use Firefox, though. For obvious reasons.

Most of the features in IE9 that they are selling are 5 years overdue.

It's still the same crap browser but ohmygosh it does HTML5!

Fixed?

Spoiler
I don't actually have any idea what their implementation of it is like, but my assumption is based on clear historical trends. Sadly.

The new link issues seems to be a bug with this website only. To fix it, you may enable compatiblity mode (on this site). You'll lose some rendering improvements over IE8 (ie. rounded edges on buttons and title bars).

@Defron. You can move the tabs to be under the URL/Address bar.

@Galuf. While I do agree it was overdue. How is it still "the same crap browser"? You hatred toward Microsoft clouds your judgement. It is vastly improved upon IE8. Its not just IE8 w/ HTML5. The Javascript implementation was completely reworked. They mostly fixed rendering accuracy (according to Acid 3 testing). Is it still not perfect and Firefox 4 may be a better overall browser, but you aren't giving it, its due credit.

edit: Typos.

The default interface is all the people I upgrade are aware of, which is the way I like it

And I never use it for personal browsing. Worst case is I change my user-agent string to IE, which works almost all of the time. Only ActiveX controls give me issues, and any site still using such a horrid technology is not a site I want to be on anyway.

I actually use parental controls to block IE from accessing any sites on my computers. It was hilarious this one time when the livingroom computer got infected with something, it kept trying to open stuff in IE and all that would happen is prompts for the administrator password would appear

Java is far worse that ActiveX imo. You can blacklist ActiveX controls (if known). I haven't been be to completely stop "driveby" Java-introduced malware. Yes, firefox has addon, whereas IE most likely does not.

I disable Java in all my browsers too :P

Opera has it completely disabled with the plugin-ignore.ini file. On Firefox it is on-demand (since I sometimes need it) with NoScript.

You calling me an idiot? My FireFox is setup like that!

I guess I get points for not using IE. :P

Even though I don't have a lot of tabs open at once (<10 most of the time), and keep my browser maximized (to be precise: stretched to cover the full screen. For whatever odd reason I am not fond of maximized windows on Windows), I still am unable to use that setup without going nuts in a matter of minutes. I mean, just with my standard browser buttons + plugins, it feels too cramped on my URL bar.
