WARNING! THIS WILL DELETE YOUR SAVE FILES! IF YOU DON'T WANT THEM DELETED THEN DOWNGRADE TO WINDOWS 7 OR WAIT FOR AN OFFICIAL PATCH!
- If you have a previously installed version from windows 7 or earlier that has been played before, you may skip to step 8.
- Install Fallout 3 normally.
- Run the fallout 3 launcher and wait for it to set up the graphics settings for your graphics card, then press play (all this does is copy some files, the game won't actually start, this is the problem we are trying to fix).
- Run the Fallout 3 v1.7 updater if your game is a lower version than 1.7 (This means you steam customers, yes, steam does not auto-update Fallout 3), it will give you an error about not finding something in a .dll file, ignore the error as the update completed successfully.
- Download this (replace dot with .): fallout3 dot nexusmods dot com/mods/15962
- Go into "My Documents" or "Documents" (the name of the folder depends on the folder you access it from) and locate the "My Games" folder, inside you will find a folder called "Fallout 3".
- Open it and paste the "fallout.ini" file from the download into that folder (note this is only a temporary thing to get the patcher to work, you don't need to follow the instructions on the mod's page).
- If you have purchased DLCs from the Windows Live feature of Fallout 3, install Fallout 3 on another computer and download these DLCs then copy them to a memory stick.
- Download this (replace dot with .): fallout3 dot nexusmods dot com/mods/1086
- Copy both files in the download to the Fallout 3 install directory.
- If you have DLCs you want to install on a memory stick copy them to a folder called "data" in your Fallout 3 install directory.
- Run the file called "Games for Windows LIVE Disabler.exe" in the Fallout 3 Install directory and hit "Disable GFWL".
- Once that is finished hit "Move DLCs".
- Now close the program, if you skipped to step 8 because your installation transferred over from another version of windows during the upgrade, skip to step 17.
- Go back to "My Documents" or "Documents" and re-locate the "My Games" folder, open the folder called "Fallout 3".
- Find and delete the file named "fallout.ini".
- Start the Fallout 3 Launcher, select your DLCs, and have fun playing Fallout 3 on windows 8.
