Is Windows 8 Gonna svck?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:21 pm

my first computer i bought had millenium............ok nuff said about that disaster. switched to XP and had no issues. i passed over vista because that was horrendous and now i have windows 7 which is greats. they seem to have a good then bad then good then bad etc. thing going on. i really want windows 8 to be good because it supports ARM processors but ..............eh. im afraid of another millenium. has microsoft learned their lesson or is this cycle doomed to continue forever.

Maybe, maybe not. I haven't been following Win8, but I've had no issues whatsoever with XP, Vista and now Win7, so I have no reason to believe Win8 will fall prey to some cycle that's had no effect on me. It sounds like it has a few features that'll be interesting though, like System Reset (even though I'll still probably go the old fashioned route of formatting/clean install). I plan on sticking with 7 for a while regardless.

"Their lesson"? What lesson? Of course their OS releases go through a good-bad cycle because one release is beta of the next, then the next release is the final version. That approach works for them because betas obviously get the best and most thorough testing that way and they know that people will keep buying their software no matter what they do, so I have no idea what "lesson" you are talking about. If people want to teach Microsoft "their lesson" they're pretty much going to have to stop buying their stuff because other than that there's absolutely nothing stopping Microsoft from continuing the same release trend.

DoS, Windows 3.1, a titanic piece of [censored] that ran ON DoS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME <--- All crap.

Windows XP <--- Awesome

Windows Vista <--- Eh. Mixed results, more or less based on hardware.

Windows 7 <--- Works pretty great, good stability and compatability.

I say their track record is looking up. I wouldn't be worried about any less than Vista Quality.

Since Vista I haven't liked the way Windows OS has gone, so I'm keeping my XP discs in tip-top shape and plan to continue using them for the next several years further if not longer. I've used Windows since 3.1 myself (used DOS but I don't consider DOS to be Windows with the exception that older Win OS's used DOS) and the only ones that svcked were 3.1, ME, Vista, and somewhat Windows 7. Favourites were Win98SE, Win2K, and WinXP. I don't have high hopes for the next Windows OS either. Can't wait til more viable competitors enter the market who tend to know what consumers want (OS platform that resembles Android).

I disagree with you about Win98, because it's best Windows version running with DOS in the background imo. Okay that version has it flaws and bugs especially the security was real crap no one can dispute that. :)

Even Microsoft has admitted that Vista was a real flop, so the next Windows version would be a surprise if they do it better than they did with Windows7 I suppose.

Microsoft has done a pretty good job of making their users think that an OS can work without command-line interface in the background.

My biggest facepalm moment was when an avid Windows user I talked with claimed that Windows OSes don't have a kernel. It's true, from the way Microsoft makes Windows the OS kernel is completely invisible and inaccessible to the user. Most Windows users think that's a good thing.

I quite disagree there. Windows 2000 is basically XP without the extra fluff, which makes it my favorite Windows of all time.

Windows 2000 = NT 5.0
Windows XP = NT 5.1

Given that Windows 7, the second coming of jesus, is almost entirely Vista with a new shell, the vista hate is entirely misplaced. It had a very, very shaky start, mostly due to absolutely appalling driver support (But that's to be expected when you ditch a decade old driver infrastructure for something half decent), but quickly became a far superior OS.

Windows 8 appears to be following much the same idea. Wheras Vista was a major overhaul for many areas, 8 will be a relatively minor improvement on 7. Should be quite good.

Well they did say that they wanted to re-capture the gaming crowd and that they were focusing heavily on performance this time around, I'd say NO it's not going to svck

And what are your reasons for not liking how Windows has come along?

Usually every second Windows svcks.

7: Good
Vista: Bad
XP: Good
ME: Bad
98: Good
95 :Bad

So based on the trend 8 will svck :hehe:

Win7 has been going good so far, so I don't see why 8 would suddenly fail

No, Windows 98 svckED. Windows 98 SE was the good one. It's like Windows ME and Windows XP lol.

Well obviously DoS exists still. But back then, DoS played a huge part with just using Windows 3.1. Comparatively, you don't use DoS AT ALL anymore, unless you're into tinkering and fixing. I personally use CLI for updates // defragments // formats and virus scans. I also wrote a few patch files for my less then "tech savy friend" so she could keep her laptop from exploding in Uni lol.

That depends on what you mean by "use" (also, it may not be DoS per se but a command-line interface is at the base of every OS, including Windows 7). The OS still issues a command-line command when you click on something, it just doesn't show it.

Why do you insist on leaving the O uncapitalized in DOS? Stands for "operating", not "of".

Anyway, no, I'm not worried.

Actually, 98 and 2000 were considered to be the most stable. ME was the worst OS ever made and Vista is probably better than that thing.

I ran Vista on multiple systems and never had an issue so I don't get how everyone bashes it, I didn't really have any compatability issues or performance problems on the systems I used it on. I even ran the Adobe suite on one of the systems and still had no issue even with only 3gb of RAM.

I also have no issues with 7 either, not that many people do. I think the main issue was the transition where software just didn't work due to the changes under the hood that Microsoft implemented. If my school offers Windows 8 through MSDNAA I will give it a shot but if not then I will just be sticking with 7 on all my systems.

http://windows8news.com/

Of course some of it is actually good ideas, but integrating more of Desktop Windows with Windows Phone sounds ingredidumb.

The bad:

http://windows8news.com/2011/04/03/windows-8-windows-explorer-ribbon-ui-revealed/

http://windows8news.com/2011/03/16/windows-8-aero-light-ui-revealed/

http://www.winrumors.com/microsoft-demonstrates-future-windows-ui-concept/

The good:

http://windows8news.com/2011/03/30/windows-8-add-history-vault/

http://windows8news.com/2011/04/11/windows-app-store-screenshots-leaked/ (read: safe channel for software distribution no different than a Linux Package Manager)

It should be noted that #3 in the bad is one of many themes, and it looks like #4 will be a toggle-able thing (but that last one is still terrible!)
