Windows Issues and Oblivion + Downloading Question

Post » Sun Aug 29, 2010 6:05 am

I have a question and an issue going on with Oblivion
First the issue. Is there any way to disable all the windows pop-ups like Sticky Keys button or to get Oblivion to not have issues with them coming up? Because it has always been bad with the crashing of Oblivion from this but it has gotten worse. I disabled all of my devices plugged into computer (Mouse, Keyboard, Modem), and then crashed my computer. I had remove the power source and re-add it to fix this, and I wouldn't like to do the repeativly each time.
My second is a question. Can Oblivion be downloaded twice onto my computer? Because I have plenty of space and would like one version for testing mods and building, and another for playing with downloaded mods.

Steam copy?

You can just copy the game folder and rename it to something else, then cycle between the two whenever you want to switch out whatever game you wish to play. Steam won't complain.

Do you have a disc copy? Where did your first copy come from?

The only download services that provide legal copies of the game are Steam and Direct2Drive. Any other means are piracy. If you do not download the game from those two sources, you are going to be asking for help somewhere else.

Just to make things very clear.

I'm using my disc to download it. Does the disc detect if you have an Oblivion folder and run the loader from it? Because then would it be possible to rename the oblivion folder to something else, then put the disc in and it would download again?

If you are using a disk, its called installing, not downloading. And having two installs might make the Windows registry behave oddly. You may be able to copy the current install to a new directory and play from that.....but still it would use the My Documents>My Games folder for saves, so it would be a bit cluttered and again, may be odd to implement in the Windows Registry. But before you do anything like that, you may want to make a backup of the Registry.

Ah yes, the confusion between "download" and "install". It seems that what you want is multiple instances of Oblivion on your computer, serving different functions. If that is indeed the case, there is a somewhat new utility designed for that very purpose, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35263. I myself do not yet use it, so can offer no personal insights. Comments both here and at Nexus have been positive. Worth a look-see in any case.
