Windows lights - which mods?

Post » Mon Sep 27, 2010 2:00 pm

After re-installing the game and discovering that I no longer had a backup of my previous mods or save files, I decided to go on a spate of downloading what I remember having on my previous install. One of these mods was Modmans' Windowlights. After a cursory look around, I now notice there seems to be several that do the same thing (namely Windows Glow and Iluminated Windows.

Is Windowlights still a good looking mod, or is it generally accepted that something else has replaced it? I've also heard talk of Windows Glow working with Windowlights, and even adding Illuminated Windows to the mix, but I don't want them to conflict, does anyone have any information on as to whether they can be used together without any problems.

Illuminated Windows is basically windowlights expanded to include the expansions, what it does is place an invisible light emmitting activator in front of windows scripted to only work at night in exteriors and during the day in interiors, Windowsglow on the otherhand actually replaces the window meshes with light emmitting statics/activators, both do the job pretty well, I find Illuminated windows to give a more realistic lighting model, but it also comes at the price of a greater performance hit due to the great number of scripted activators added by the mod, which can be fixed if you know the CS pretty well, pretty much you just need to add the line DontSaveObject after the startscript function of each script added by the mod, and it will help keep your save file clean, and the game running smoothly. This is however, tedius work.

Both mods are good, which is better is arguable. (I use Illuminated windows personally, if that means anything, but I have edited all of the scripts included in the mod)

For vibrant lights I used Modmans script for a daylight lights off and night time lights on. But I set the distant to very, very low and colored the lights. This saved on fps greatly and gave almost no loss. But it's colored lights and not for everyone's taste.
