Windows 7 + Obmm

Post » Fri Feb 25, 2011 5:12 am

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit) and have had my first opportunity to install and play Oblivion. I'd like to start gradually adding some mods and understand that I should start by using OBMM. I've downloaded it from TesNexus and installed it. However, when I start it I'm informed that I "appear to be running as a limited user", followed by a recommendation that I check the "run as an administrator" checkbox in the compatibility settings. This is a warning for Vista users, but as stated I'm using Windows 7. Anyone out there have any advice?

I should maybe mention that I'm not completely new to mods per se, as I've played a bit of Morrowind. However, I've never used Windows Vista, and though I've read a bit about that systems somewhat confusing administration system, I've never used it myself.

Do I need .NET 2 to run OBMM with Windows 7? The info at TESNexus says I'll get a prompt from the installer if I need it, but I didn't (get a prompt, that is).

Is the current version at TESNexus (1.1.12) the latest one?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

:)

That is indeed the latest version of OBMM. I am assuming you are getting this message because of the close relationship of the two operating systems (albeit one much, much better.) It has been a while since I first started using OBMM, but if that is listed as a requirement, then you need it. How are you installing the program without being an admin? or running as an admin, I guess...

With Windows 7 it's quite simple -- to start with, I'm logged into my main account which is the administrator account. When I install a pop-up asks me if its okay to run the program -- I hit the yes button, and that's it. So I have OBMM installed in my Program (X86) folder, which is where I also have Oblivion installed at the moment.

Oh, well that is interesting...There was another thread about running on X64 yesterday. Maybe there is something there. Do you have .NET installed now?

Edit: Maybe try the running as administrator thing anyway. The hoops you have to jump through to get Oblivion to work on these newer operating systems do not cease to amaze me.

Windows 7 has .Net 3.5 integrated into it, and yes you need to run OBMM as administrator or any change by it will be done in the virtual store, instead of the Oblivion directory (basically killing the functionality of OBMM).

I also recommend changing your user account access restrictions on the \Bethesda Softworks\ folder, so side utilities like boss can write to the folder.
IE: right click > Properties > Security tab > click edit > select Users("Computer Name")\Users > check modify & write

SoSway:

Great! Thanks! It appears to have worked. OBMM seems to be running as it should. Now to figure out how to use it....

Thanks very much, once again.

I have Win7 64-bit and everything works perfectly (without modifying UAC or any other funny business).

If you have Vista or Windows 7, you simply need to install Oblivion somewhere OUTSIDE the default "Program Files" folder...such as C:\Games\Oblivion or D:\Oblivion, etc.

This is mentioned in the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Oblivion_Mods_FAQ and I'd strongly recommend anyone thinking about or currently using mods to read through it at least once. It will save you many unnecessary headaches.

As for learning how to use OBMM, check my sig.
