Windows Problems

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:26 am

Okay so i have a version for Windows XP but so far it has worked on Vista (i got a new computer recently) but i tried to adjust the resolution to see if it was better with my new monitor and i did not like it. So i did the default back to old settings thing and i restarted the game and the main screen is fine but now when i enter the actually game all i see is a black screen and some of the icons, such as the compass on the bottom of the screen, if i open the inventory, etc. I do not know why it is doing this and i am worried it is because its a Windows XP game but i assumed it would work on all PC's. if someone could help me figure this out i would really appreciate it. I know you might be like well Skyrim is out now so forget that game but i do not have Skyrim i have this so i want to get it working again. Thank You in advance.

My secondary computer, which houses my old, original Oblivion play-through, runs Windows Vista. Vista runs the game well. I've also changed game resolution several times to accomodate different monitors.

How / what did you adjust to change resolution? An in-game or Oblivion.ini settings? How exactly did you "default back to old settings"?

What's your video card? The way you're describing it, you may be the victim of the Nvidia fog bug.

Oh and to answer you question Decrepit i opened the video settings while in game and it has a slide bar i just clicked the arrows to get to what i wanted then relogged and realized i did not like it so i logged into my character and opened video settings again and there is a default button then relogged but the second time i did a relog (the one after i defaulted) it was all black while i was in game.

I want to say that may be your problem as integrated graphics chips usually don't work too well with games. However, I can't find much about that one at all with regards to features that it supports...

First thing to try would be to delete the Oblivion.ini file (in your Documents\My Games\...), which forces the game to create a new one. Then select the appropriate settings & resolution.

That's usually the best way to recover from messed-up settings.

I'm betting that you turned on something (like maybe HDR) that your video card doesn't properly support.
