Windows 10 or Windows 7. Worth to upgrade?

Post » Wed Oct 28, 2015 11:30 pm

I am on Windows 7 at the moment

Is there any benefit or reason to upgrade. The main thing I do on m PC is game so I don't need it to do anything else substantial.

I am concerned that W10 is going to be a buggy mess compared to W7 and will not perform well.

What are other people's experience's?

I'm using W10 on a laptop for school, and it's an outright mess at times. Granted, I'm using a laptop that's one of those 2-in-1 things that I "kinda" got svckered into.

Right now, I'm looking at parts for a new mobo, and I'm really, REALLY tempted to snap a copy of W7 Professional 64 bit, all Ultimate copies seem to be gone, so I don't have to use W10.

Not sure if it's true, but the bad rumor I've heard is that the new DX is being held hostage where you have to go for W10 in order to get it and play the shinier games.

Windows 10 wasn't bad but some of my editing software didn't work on it, so far I've been content with Windows 7.

If gaming is your main concern I'd stay with W7 for now.

In my research I came across this benchmark video and screen shot the table.

As you said -"for the moment"

I would advise you to stick with W7 (for the moment)...

On the same hardware, there is no magic stick that will raise your performance to the sky high.

At the end, it's more or less: just having the latest OS in your computer.

No compatibility issues with Windows 10 from my experience.

I would recommend it, but sticking with Windows 7 is fine. Although I'll remind you that switching to Windows 10 is something you'll probably have to do eventually.

I wouldn't recommend Windows 7 for a new system though.

@PredatorX: I wouldn't say DirectX 12 is being held hostage. Microsoft wants everyone to be on the same revision of Windows, and I can't blame them. DirectX 12 isn't required, so don't make a big deal over it. A similar thing happened with Windows XP and not having DirectX 10/11 support.

I agree with the above. If the time comes to buy an OS, i would choose W10 too...

W7 will be "obsolete" in a couple years anyway.

But for the time being, he could just stick with W7.

I like both W7 and W10.

If you make an image of your W7 install with something like EaseUS ToDo Backup (free, and what I did.) then upgrade the current W7 to W10.

Play with W10 (I'd recommend a clean install once it's been activated after the upgrade.) and if you don't like it re-image W7 back to the same state it was in before you tried W10.

If you want, and have yet to accept the upgrade prompt, I'd image the drive first to avoid the extra content the W10 upgrade will added to your system. (Downloaded files.)

If you are concerned with the whole "spyware" thing with W10 use O&Oshutup10 (or other) and lock your rig down as you see fit. (Lots of options.) Though I understand some folks reluctance to move to W10 for this reason, I personally am beyond giving a [censored]. (O&Oshutup10) It's a personal decision you'll have to make for yourself.
