Windstad but no Valdimar?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 8:52 pm

I am almost completely finished furnishing Windstad but I have no housecarl. I read that it's supposed to be Valdimar from Morthal but he never showed up when I went into Highmoon Hall. Any idea where I can find him? Thanks.

You need to be the Thane of Hjaalmarch in order to gain a Housecarl. Speak with the Jarl of Morthal - you'll have to compete some quests if you haven't already.

I already thought I was thane. There are no more quests available. In order to buy the land I thought you needed to be thane already or am I mistaken?

No, you have it backward. In order to be a thane you have to first own land (if land is available to purchase in the vanilla version.. Otherwise it's just helping the people of the hold).

You don't need to be thane to buy the three new plots, you do need to be thane for the new housecarls. And your steward is any follower you choose to basically buy you building mats and upgrades, and act as a second guard for the home.

I am fairly certain I helped everyone out and completed the associated quests in Morthal. In the other two areas housecarls came to me, with Highmoon Hall, nothing. I will investigate more. Maybe i am missing something. Thanks for the replies. :)

Do you have the 'Blade of Hjaalmarch' weapon, or something along those lines? The Jarl will give it to you upon becoming Thane. That's the easiest way to double-check if you're a Thane. Or you could be arrested in Morthal, and see if the option "I'm the Jarl's thane ..." appears.

He also constantly patrols outside and does go all the way down to the water, where the fish hatchery will be. At night, normally late night, he will come in and sleep in a bed. Also if you have detect life spell, that will help spot him.

Though as advised, check to make sure you are Thane first.

Also if you used to be thane, and the Jarl changed, you have to be made thane by the new Jarl.

I am definitely thane. I punched a chicken and had the option in getting out of the crime. If he's available will he just show up? I've looked almost everywhere I could think of.

He will eventually walk to your house. I've noticed it to be slightly buggy but since I got him, I didn't give it much more thought.

Valdimar showed up and I was like ok, cool. I started to make additions to my house and I didn't like the way it looked, so I reloaded. I started to build again and he never showed up. I started to worry and I've even tried fast travelling all over. So then I reloaded again and saw him walking through the woods towards my house. I ran up to him and picked him up as a follower and dumped him at my house. He's stayed ever since, doing his job patrolling my property.

Unfortunately I don't know the rhyme or reason to this, if it is a true bug or not or what makes him walk to your house. Again, did you check around your property including down by the water?

Did you build single beds inside the house? It maybe a possibility to trigger him, since he does sleep in the bed but I've seen other housecarls stand around in empty pre-hearthfire houses.

My other two housecarls appeared as soon as I entered their halls. Valdimar never showed. All three houses are built. I guess I am out of luck with having a housecarl from Morthal. No biggie I guess, as I am having a blast with the rest of Hearthfire. I have three houses to fill with stuff! :)

He might show up some day. I've heard of such things happening with dead thralls. You loose them and a week later they show up. Something like that.

I've noticed they like to take pretty long strolls away from your houses. Both the Dawnstar guy and Morthal guy have done this, they keep coming back though.

I never had him to begin with though. When I went into Highmoon hall he wasn't there like the other housecarls. It would be nice if he did show up one day but I don't think it will happen.

Valdimar is a little strange. Life was good and then one night I go home and he wasn't around at ALL. He wasn't in his bed, he wasn't around outside, I used detect life all over. I then fast traveled to take care of some business around Skryim, came back (probably quite a few days later) and he was outside taking a stroll again.

Don't know if others reported not receiving him but the DLC is littered with bugs.
