[WIPZ] Winter Wonderland! (an other-world house mod)

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:20 pm

Purpose

I was looking at other house mods out there and I wanted one that truly had a good view. So then I came up with the idea to release different themed house mods (winter/tropical/etc.) as pocket dimensions with breathtaking landscapes. Back when I was doing preliminary work for my new world mod Aezarka, I devised a method of making some pretty nice looking LOD landscapes.

Winter Wonderland

In one sentence:
It started with a http://elderion.com/ww/FrozenDream.jpg then became http://elderion.com/ww/dawn.jpg.

Winter Wonderland will be my first mod of these themed house mods. You find a pocket dimension within a well mysterious book that takes you to the mystical land of Eyr. Eyr is not on the Nirn map, it is far far south (an Antarctica so-to-speak). There you find a small settlement of Falmer and Breton living in this magestic land.

Features

the completed mod will feature:

- A new worldspace with around 20 to 30 explorable cells.
- A small town with amenities
- Frosty Bean Kof'ee House
- 3 different sized "dorms" inside the Fortress of the Mountain King
- 1 full house
- Purchasable deer mounts
- Dungeon with quest and new weapons/armor

I dislike using vanilla OB's models and textures much, so I either tend to outsource or make my own. As such, Eyr features completely new trees, ground textures, architecture, a Nordic Dungeon tileset, Ice Caves, and many other new material... consequentially this means the download will be fairly large.

I use Geocontrol for the heightmap and some other programs and hand-paint the LOD texture. The LOD texture in the screenshot is not even high-res, just the standard Oblivion resolution.

So I just wanna gauge people's opinions here. Would you all rather a fortress that's given to you? Or one attached to a quest, or one that is purchasable?

I know I am guilty of the latter, since I'm lazy and I just want my freakin' house!

That castle looks like TR meshes for Morrowind...

This is really interesting, look and design wise. Im keeping my eye on this.

i prefer attached to a quest, even if it's as simple as go kill the resident bandits or whatnot. :)

I know...I simply said they look like TR meshes. Which the way the textures and windows on the tower are, they certainly look similar.

Again, nice looking mod. Im wondering though...will one be able to explore that "detailed" LOD mountain?

The mountains are just for scenic appearance. Sure, if I decided later to make an update to make other parts explorable, it would be possible. But new-world mods are impossible to undertake! Winter Wonderland is mainly a house mod, with a nice atmosphere.

Yeah they are fun until you get to quests and interiors and dungeons, and fixing bugs that never go away. I spent more than 1000 hours on Aezarka and I still think it will never be finished! Check out http://www.elderion.com if you'd like to see my work so far.

can you actually put the Landscapes you create in Geocontrol in the TES construction set as a model? if so will it run heavily in game? (if it's possible to make it run in game) and one last question, can you use it as landscape and even walk on it in game?

Yes, no, and yes.

I only created the meshes for the LOD in Geocontrol, not the textures. But the meshes themselves are no more grafics-taxing then vanilla Oblivion's. Like I said, the textures I created for the landscapes are only 1024X1024, which is the standard size for Oblivions! It is actually not high-def in any way. (im sure it would be absolutely radical if I made some 4096X4096 textures!)

And yes you can walk around in it! For this mod, all I did was generate the LOD then pick a pretty spot :)

If someone wanted to use my world to add another region, this is a definate possibility!

awsome :D then why not create a world using these type of landscapes and textures? will be looking further into this matter, currently working on a cool mod, very excited about the possiblity to use these types of landscapes ^^
