(WIP)Ebonheart Expanded

Post » Mon Feb 01, 2010 6:20 am

Hello,

It looks very good! You've done a great work with Ebonheart, and it now looks like a real city! :goodjob:
As for the side Walks, I'll try to make it optional. Since most are split on it it seems.

It should probably be the best solution.

This looks great, I think it might be the first city expansion I actually download. About the sidewalks, I would vote no if you can't get the two esp method to work, simply because I don't see why they would need them. There are no cars, after all, and as far as I know sidewalks weren't really all that big prior to the invention of the automobile (and certainly not until the post-Reformation period). Unless you're including super-fast horses. ^_^

Actually sidewalks where pretty 'big' in cities because of the mud and flith that tended to run in the streets when it rained/snowed.

But most of that filth was coming from the windows that would be directly above sidewalks, so I'm a bit confused. I know they certainly were not a feature of medieval cities, and I've never seen them in contemporary illustrations of Renaissance cities. I'd really appreciate an example, because this has got me interested in a very sad way. :embarrased:

I'm not claiming that they were around prior to the Renaissance. But they were definately around before the auto  They were present in colonial Philadelphia for example at the least: http://www.brynmawr.edu/iconog/schwarz/11-15.jpg
Independence Hall: http://americasbesthistory.home.att.net/nara518208.jpg

And I found this image of Shakespere's birthplace:http://www.csupomona.edu/~maaron/courses/london/englonsite/Elizabethan/ShakespeareBirthplaceOld.jpg

Sidewalks are apparently so common it's easier to search for a period image with them in it then it is to place their origin date.

Honestly though, I'm not all that interrested in a historical debate related to Morrowind since they don't exactly mesh.

The problem of how to deal with "night soil" (wonderful old euphemism, that) was endemic as urban centers grew during the European Rennaissance. I've read many complaints by period writers about the practice of emptying chamberpots out into the streets, but I've yet to see a visual depiction because of the cultural taboo on its depiction in the arts. Even Constantijn Huysmans, who taught Van Gogh in the 19th century, had to repaint a scene showing a small party on horseback because his first execution of it plainly showed horse excrement on the trail.

Too bad the old Roman solution of sending around dung collectors at dark to collect refuse for sale as field manure wasn't tried by later Europeans. But Rome had the Pax Romana and absolute security for its farmers, while Rennaissance cities were more like extended forts and ecclessiastical centers, unable to guarantee protection outside their immediate borders. Or perhaps it just had to do with a cultural tolerance for certain physical conditions? Even when physicians did hit upon excrement as a source of disease, nobody paid much attention--just as happens today in such places as Calcutta.

Honestly though, I'm not all that interrested in a historical debate related to Morrowind since they don't exactly mesh.

And this is very true. :D

It's a bit absurd to think about Morrowind as having any basis in history - especially given the steampunk-style technology of the dwarves and Sotha Sil.

People whine about my mods being non-lore (which is a bit annoying, considering how much effort I put into researching the lore) when according to their own standards, the electrical (or, as I'd put it, thaumoenergetic) lightbulbs in Dwemer ruins shouldn't exist.

Long story short, keep the the sidewalks - they look good. No matter how hard you try, if it is a mod that basically changes anything at all about Morrowind (hence being a mod), someone will whine about it not adhering to the lore. Ignore them and do what you want. Who cares about Medieval Europe in a game about elves?

Complete agreement. When you come right down to it, there isn't a game out there that actually pays the slightest attention to the actual conditions of either the late medieval or early Rennaissance periods in Western Europe, though many have a pseudo-medieval flavor based on fantasy literature. The sidewalks look fine. If anyone complains, ask them where in France during the 13th century ACE could you find a Dark Elf casting a Levitate spell?

Lore I like, because of internal consistency within the environment. But I've never found any problems with your mods, Princess Stomper, since they all seem to flow from a real understanding of it. It's not as though you added an FF7 rifle. ;)

Calm down guys. The question of removing the sidewalks has to do with FPS not lore. Someone only made a small off handed comment about the possible history of sidewalks which I disagreed with but could find no readily available link to disprove.

No one wants to start a lore war...

...and when did the dark one become the reasonable one? Must be getting sick... *goes off grumbling*

Nah, pop back over to my forum and join in the mud-pit. We have throwing-chairs, you know. Winner gets a cookie.

Back on topic, though, my recommendation to ignore the pedants and just use whatever you personally think looks good still stands.

Ancient Rome had sidewalks.

I think it's safe to say Ebonheart should too. Regardless, as it does affect FPS, I suggest releasing two .esps, because I REALLY want the sidewalks. What's I want more is a decent sized Imperial city in Morrowind. As Ebonheart seemed to be the Empire's base of operations in Vvardenfell, it really bugged me when I heard so much about it way back in the way when I just started Morrowind, only to arrive and find...

A dock. A tavern. A castle.

I should have brought popcorn to read these latest posts. ;)

I desided to trim down on the side walks. they will still be there in most places but not every where. (wheb I tryed to make two seperate ESPs it ended up becoming too much work, The two versions would be too different with so much moving around.

As for lore or History, simple answer is that they show up in Empirial towns in Oblivion so I would imagine that that makes them respect lore.

Princess Your expansions are great fun and very nicely done. Don't take any crap for them, You don't deserve it. Let them go down load something else if they aren't happy.

As for progress, I've said it before, I ain't the fastest modder (overloaded with RL work), but its getting there. Shouldn't be much longer.

Very cool!

Small idea... can you make house that the player can buy? I'd love to have a house in the center of the Imperial presence...
