(WIP) Rocks Resource

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:51 pm

I learned a new way to make rocks. :o Using this method I can make practically an infinite amount of all sorts of rather realistic looking rocks with a few clicks of the mouse and mashing the keyboard. The most time consuming part is rendering the ambient occlusion map. :brokencomputer:

Anyway, on to the goods.

These rocks are sorta high poly, 1200 tri's each, but I should be able to optimise them relatively easy. They will be a resource, like the title says. I don't really care to take the effort to place them in game. :S

That is it for now but I should have more soon I think. :)

Looks really good! I'd like to see a few rocks made the same dimensions as the vanilla rocks so that a replacer could be done, otherwise there will be clipping issues. Also snow rocks, mossy rocks, etc, would be a welcome addition! Those are more textural things I guess though. I'd try to do some rocks that have been split open, huge rocks that have cracks you can almost walk in, etc.

I do plan to make some rocks that are similar to the rocks in MW perhaps with a few extra polygons though. :D Snow and moss can be added to the texture quite easy.

The rock creation rig I have set up right now only works well with a more standard type of rock but I am pretty sure I could model some more unusual looking rocks (shapes) and apply these steps to them. I will have to try that later. Right now I am going to focus on the more common type(s) of rocks. :)

Sweet! I hope TR uses them :) (Does the TR team use resources from other mods btw?) Mossy rocks would be nice as well; They could be used in Riller-Moos

Check the video http://saschahenrichs.blogspot.com/2010/03/3dsmax-environment-modeling-1.html The video is a tutorial for 3dsmax but some people at http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=71002 have used a similar method to make rocks in blender and I think Maya as well. I am sure this can be done in probably any 3d app if you know the equivalent tools in your program of choice.

The video only covers the high poly version. Apparently he is working on a couple more videos to follow along the one linked above that will cover game res and mapping I guess. I sorta just figured out the last bits on my own.

If anybody needs help doing this in max shoot me a line. Unfortunately I dont have any working knowledge of blender or any other app so don't ask. <_< Otherwise I will be making some rocks. :)

Superb! A rock replacer could be interesting since they're literally all over the place :)

@AOF: I remember this video from some time ago, did already something similar in Blender, but just for testing. I'm curious, how much of the detail will get rendered ingame. :)

By detail I assume you mean the polycount? I am going to try to keep the polycount to a minimum. Every rock will probably be different depending on several factors I suppose.

Thanks AOF for the great tutorial, real simple. Wondering tho, what method did you use to uvmap?

I pelt mapped the low poly rock, added the steps for the highpoly rock, then I rendered the detail from the high poly rock as an ambient occlusion to the texture map. After that I just used a rusty metal texture for the color and the render in the OP is the result. After all that I just need to clean up the seams.

Don't lie, it's looking too much bad.

I sort of read that as sarcasm but like SWG said, if you are going to be an ass then go elsewhere. If that is sarcasm perhaps you should make yourself more clear about it next time. Otherwise if you are going to criticize peoples work then at least make an attempt to offer advice, opinion, something helpful.

Imma try something a little more unique next. Maybe a stalagmite, stalactite, and or whatever its called when they are connected. :whistling:

I am going to be making all sorts of rocks, big and small, and all sorts of shapes.

Next Rock....

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/7059/rocks03.png

The smaller more spherical rocks are the same rocks in image 02. The larger oval/egg shaped rocks are new. I had this one made from earlier just never got to making it game res, rendering the occlusion map, and creating the texture. :)

Still going to make something a bit more unique but figured I should finish this one first.
