Wireless Internet goes out when playing Games

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:04 am

Whenever playing a game on my laptop such as WOW or EvE online my wireless internet will disconnect. I have a button on my keyboard that turns my wireless on and off like many laptops do, and when playing these games after a couple minutes it will be turned off and I need to restart my computer to be able to get my wireless working again. This must be a problem with my computer and not the internet itself because I'm on campus and I see many other people playing games here. Any help or advice anyone is able to provide would be appreciated. Here are my specs....

Sounds like either a power issue (battery is drained) or overheating. I doubt you are playing a game while operating on the battery, but if you are then you should use the AC adapter.

Overheating would be my first guess, too. However...one other thing I would try would be to go into your Device Manager (Start -> search for "Device Manager"; or Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager) and find your wireless card. It should be under the "network adapters" subheading.

When you've found it, right click -> Properties. In the Power Management tab, make sure that the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not checked. If it is checked, uncheck it, click OK, and see if that fixes your problem. If it's unchecked already, then we're back at the power/overheating guess.

If you're trying to run games while running the laptop off the battery (which I do not recommend for games like WoW), I'd say it's very likely the laptop's powering the wireless off to save battery life, especially if the option I mentioned is selected. Wireless takes up more battery power than you'd think.
