Wireless Networking Help

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:51 am

I recently bought an Xbox 360 and I want to connect it to the internet. I have DSL internet at my house right now with a wireless modem that came from Qwest (it is a ZyXEL PK500Z modem/router). I also have a D-Link DIR-625 wireless router that is sitting around collecting dust. Now my dilemma is this: My Xbox is nowhere near my modem so I can't connect to the internet or Xbox Live because my Xbox does not have built in wireless. Can I somehow use my D-Link router to pick up the wireless signal and connect my Xbox to that using an ethernet cable? I am connecting to Live at the moment by using my laptop as a wireless adapter but I do not want to do that forever.

The Xbox has a wireless attachment. It plugs into the USB port in the back. It's a little expensive though.

I knew that, I just don't want to buy one.

Is your xbox near a computer that has internet? You could set up a network bridge...though they're kinda complicated for novices.

Yeah, I had it bridged with my laptop but I don't want to have to have my laptop by my Xbox anytime I want to connect to Live.

Well then your only two options are investing in a wireless adapter for the 360 or running cat5 through your house.

EDIT: OH. I see what you want to do here..Router to router? I've had some bad experiences trying to do that..

You might want to try looking into wireless access points...but i'm pretty sure the router/acess point needs to be connected to another router via cable in order to work.

Go to http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index, flash your D-Link router with their firmware and you can turn it into a wireless access point, basically a wireless adapter with four ports. Then just match up the wireless settings, and connect the D-Link to your Xbox with an ethernet cord, as long as you have wireless signal you'll be online. Just go read up on it.

I can guarantee it works because it's the exact same thing I'm doing with my computer/xbox, except I'm using a Linksys router. Like I said, it turns the router into a wireless adapter with four ports.

Edit.

I looked up the compatibility of your router, couldn't find it on the dd-wrt supported list, so this might not help you at all.

However, looking at the http://static.compusa.com/pdf/D-Link-DIR-625-manual.pdf, it looks like you can make the D-Link DIR 625 a WAP all on its own. (I was thinking the same thing as you, but after I noticed the lack of official documented support for DD-WRT I googled for other options :P)

That isn't wirelessly though you need it plugged into the other router, or atleast that's what I gathered from reading it, but maybe I read it wrong.

Edit: no, nevermind, I misread that forum post you are correct.

Ok, it looks like I will just have to spring for the Microsoft adapter then. Ugh, I already bought a hard drive at their outlandish prices. Thanks for the posts, guys :).

Have you tried modifying the settings of the D-link DIR-615 to turn it into a Wireless Bridge? I don't know if it will work correctly with XBOX Live, but usually if you disable DHCP and UPnP on the D-link and manually set its wireless AP to connect with the router (default gateway) and give it a static IP address within the DHCP parameters of the router. Devices connected to the bridge will need IP settings manually configured.

That sounds... complicated.
