I Wish There Had Been More "Vegas"

No, not more DLCs or arbitrary additions to the game. New Vegas itself, another street, another block, more buildings, slum tenements, more people wanting me to hustle others, debts to collect, bounties to hunt, shady dealings to undertake, casinos to rob either through the card table or elaborate plans involving a weak section of the wall, masks, and firing warning shots into the air.

I wanted to make a fortune by doing actual jobs, taskwork, gambling, con-artistry, etc. rather than harvesting raiders and Legionaries. I was hoping each building would have more people, more quests (just 1-2 for an entire Family or casino? Really?), I wanted to slowly swirl a Rum and Nuka as I looked at the Mojave from the balcony of my high roller suite, the conflict over Hoover Dam little more to me than an easily ignored headline on a tabloid rag as I sought my next big score.

Yea, I was REALLY dissappointed in how small the map actually is. Especially when you consider 30% of it is impassable mountains.

I agree I thought the strip was poor but it done the job but for somewhere so iconic I expected a little more.

yes, it was dissapointing, but still good. the strip was not as i hoped it would have been, i was hoping for Vegas, not 200 meters of road with a few buildings. Vegas baby. Although i cant complain, they did a good job, given the time they were given.

This is really the essence of it, they did a good job considering the time they were given. I actually really liked the Strip; it met my expectations of what I saw New Vegas as, a glowing jewel in the middle of ruins.

It was due to time constraints, unfortunately.

Otherwise The Strip and Outer Vegas (probably) would have been a bit bigger.

I love to be out in the Mojave at night and see the lights of New Vegas in the distance... and yea, there is much more to Vegas than just the strip - well said Gingy. ;)

The glitz, the lights, the drunken soldiers... the first time I set foot into the Lucky 38... the dark, the quiet, the mystery... oh yea, I wasn't disappointed.
I think New Vegas was perfect for this world. I mean, I didn't expect it to be huge.

Yeah, I thought it was a good size too. I prefer the wasteland, honestly (at least in terms of exploration), but I like The Strip and Outer Vegas as a base of civilization and as a change of pace from the small communities that make up the rest of the map. I can see why others may have been disappointed though.

I think New Vegas was perfect for this world. I mean, I didn't expect it to be huge.

They were trying to set themselves apart from what Bethesda did in Fallout 3. Fallout 3 was a theme-park setting, where the character could go explore IRL stuff from DC. But the buildings and wastes are very repetitive in a graphics perspective.

I thought the Strip alone was great, but then again, you have Freeside, Westside, North Vegas, and South Vegas, which are all important.

Yea, I feel the same way. I like the quiet rural communities and if I feel to see a bit of glitz and "civilization" I'll head to the Strip. My last two characters even prefer the motel in Novac to staying in the Lucky 38. Well, my newest character hasn't made it to the strip yet LOL

I totally agree, there are plenty of small communities around the Strip... I mean the Thorn is really cool by itself ;) So yea, plenty of stuff to do and see around New Vegas.

When I first played NV, arrival to the Strip was a sort of an "Journey beats the destination" lesson to me, which was a rather good thing for looking at the game in first playthrough with that view was quite enjoyable. But I agree it could've been bigger and better. *Sigh* If only Obsidian had had more time....

Oh, definitely. Just getting the New Vegas proper was such an exciting endeavor, and I know there's more to it than the Strip but North Vegas Square and Westside don't really have what I was hoping for.

New Vegas is easily, EASILY my favorite game of the last couple years without a doubt. However, as an old Vegas boy in the real world I was just kind of hoping for... more. I don't know. It's not a BAD thing, the way it is now, but it is a little underwhelming to finally get there, hear about how many thousands of thousands of caps they rake in daily, how overcrowded Freeside is and the actual in-game representation of either is lacking, at best. The casinos are virtually empty except for the Ultra-Luxe, Freeside's overcrowding problem is apparently hosted entirely off screen, etc.

That's why mods are fantastic. Vegas feels much more realistic. But they did IMO the best job they could with the time given, and it was a good job. They made my favorite game.

Personally, before more Vegas, I think we needed more Legion. If there were more time, that apparently would be the priority according to Josh Sawyer.

I think removing the barriers on the Strip would actually do wonders to make it filler bigger.

Vegas as a whole (Northside, Westside, Freeside and other such communities) feels big enough, the Strip? The Strip I just think needs more people and less walls. For a post-apocalyptic world based on the 1950s and the limitations of the engine, I think they did well, but the barriers and population make it feel smaller.

I loved it myself thought they did a good job with the strip I always get hyped up when I have to battle my way through there. It never lets me down when I finally make it I love the lights and the gambling and going to do the different casinos.

To be fair, they were probably basing the Strip off of it's state in the 1950's, and unless I'm wrong, back then it was pretty much just a couple big casinos on one street, just as it is in the game.

That's what I'm thinking. Though it didn't need to be separated by 2 walls. Could have easily made it into one loading screen. Though I'd imagine players using consoles or not up to date computers would have trouble there.

Playing on a console, I understood that having the walls there saved me some lagging, so it's not so much the scale of the place that irks me, just how everything is arranged. If it were up to me, I'd switch it up so Gomorrah, The Tops, and The Ultra Luxe were all in one section, and I'd switch around the Lucky 38 and NCR Embassy sections. That way you'd get a bit of tension walking up to this looming building at the very end of the Strip, and the Three Families' casinos would all be grouped together.

I think NV was big enough before they had to change it to work on consoles. They originally had the strip all in one cell and although it was the same size, it felt a lot bigger.

Yeah, the Strip does lag horribly without the junk doors, sadly.

I would have liked it more if the scale was actually smaller - if Vegas and its outer limits actually sprawled over most of the map, so that it felt like a real city instead of a game city. The Mojave Desert is an interesting place but if I had to choose I'd pick a more detailed Vegas any day.
