With fallout new vegas on the horizon....

Hey guys, I was just wondering, since fallout NV is is looming in the very near future :foodndrink: :celebration: :fallout: what do you think will happen with the fallout 3 modding scene? Will it just fall to the wayside and all the mod authors will be focusing on that from then on, or will they be doing a bit of both? Also, I'm hoping that a theres just as many quest mods as there are content mods, because still, even though this was a topic of heated debate many moons ago on these very forums, I think that STILL there arn't all that many great quest mods as there were for oblivion. Well discuss!

With Morrowind and Oblivion in mind- our community will have long and happy life. Don't forget, developers will need 5-10 patches to decrease number of existing bugs in the NV slightly, and to add some number of new ones :) This is tradition!

NV will have more functions. More functions = more fun to script for = cheerio, Fallout 3.

Kinda a broad question hm? I don't have a crystal ball, and I think that's what it would take.

I still plan on releasing updates to my Realism Tweaks after FONV is out . . . after all, I still have new ideas that I haven't even tried modding yet. My new Med-Tec module (which will be part of version 5.0 of my Tweaks), is a perfect example, since it adds an entire new level to being injured and to treating your injuries.

Personally, I'm going to be playing Fallout 3 for quite a while yet . . . and I'm guessing so will many others. Releasing Fallout 3 didn't seem to slow down the Oblivion mods at that much. Even though FO3 and FONV are very similar games, I feel that they have enough differences to keep FO3 alive for some time yet. But I will be getting FONV (I've already pre-ordered it) and I do plan on releasing mods for it.

So- what we will have in the result?
1. Some modders will switch themselves to NV
2. Some modders will stick themselves to Fallout 3
3. Some modders will work with both games.
PS I have crystal ball from Fallout 2, it tell me... things :whisper:

Well yeah but oblivion and fallout are different, we don't have a sequel yet to distract us from oblivion, so this is rather unprecedented so far as this series and supra large modding community have to do with eachother. well I personally think we'll see many many new mods for NV on the same scale as we did with new vegas, but perhaps also more quest content too because it'l be much easier to work with the lore and it's a different atmosphere ( metaphorically ) but hopefully we'll still get some modders working on fallout 3, as I and I'm sure many others will be still playing it for a while to come.

Considering that they will be using the same basic engine, I see no reason why people won't be modding for both. There's going to be alot of porting back and forth, keeping both titles active for awhile.

As a player, my intention is to play through NV right away with the base game. Then I will likely come back to FO3 for a while and by the time I get back to NV again I'll expect a lot of mods to be ready.

Yeah, I'm gonna play through new vegas stock first a few times, then play some other game or fallout 3, then come back when mods are made for it, or mess around with my own. Also, porting isn't allowed, there was a tool for that, but it isn't to be named here, i wonder if it still exists though.

Porting of original content (stuff you made yourself) is always allowed.

Porting of content that ships with the game is not permitted.

I'm planning to transfer a couple of my mods over, though Powered Power Armor will be seriously gutted without FOSE. After that I'll probably do what I'm doing now, putting my time into whichever mod is generating the most feedback from the gamers. Fun factors into it though too.

Im going right to modding NV. I love Fallout 3, but its gotten old, and i need a fresh world with new potential for modding. Im a svcker for new and improved things, so I don't see myself returning to mod F3 once I leave.

And since it sounds like both games will have alot of items in common, that means alot of potential for porting mods to both.

I'm wondering how the Nexus will handle it, the last I read it hadn't been decided whether NV would get its own site or be lumped in with the rest of Fallout 3. My guess is they'll wait a bit before opening a dedicated NV site, to see how much traffic its likely to get.

yeah it'l be interesting to see if there will be a fallout new vegas nexus, I do very hope so because if there isn't then how will we tell the difference between new vegas mods and regular mods for fallout 3, unless they have a different section for them, another thing i'd like to touch bases on is FOSE, i'm sure there will be a FOSE for new vegas, and I wonder if FOMM will work too...

They managed it just fine with Morrowind and Oblivion, so I'm sure they'll come up with something.

There's no guarantee that we'll have either of those. Both were done by private modders, and I don't recall any mention of the authors continuing their work with New Vegas. Of course other people might, and no doubt will, pick them up and work on them if they don't but you shouldn't make any presumptions at this point. I'd say FOMM was a more likely bet than FOSE. And no, the current version won't work for New Vegas, at least not as is. It's currently tagged to the Fallout 3 exe and Data folder.

Doubt anything will happen. If everyone that mods for FO3 likes it that much to do so. Kinda makes them look silly to dump something they like for a new toy. But its up to those folks to be like fishy...."OOOhhhhh SPARKLY !!"

XD

Personally I hate the idea of new vegas from the get go. I hate steam even more than shaving my nads with a rusty razor. So that said I assume at least a handful of people may think as I do and stick around lol

kaburke just had a thread here soliciting opinions on FOMM before he starts building for New Vegas. Ianpatt (I think) has said that as long as FOSE is possible with New Vegas they intend to do it. They just need time and the chance to see how the executable is set up.

thats good to hear though, also STEAM ISN'T THAT BAD, really guys, I use it, I've never had a single problem with it EVER. If anything its easier cuz i can play them on all my computers without carrying discs around. also, it's better then that [censored] games for windows live we used earlier.

Keep modding Fallout 3! Some players are relatively new, in that when the new game is about to come out, the old game is about half the price, so some players, like myself, wait to play the older games. I would hate to see Fallout 3 modding stop. It won't stop I am sure, but could slow down a bit. I have only had Fallout 3 for a few weeks now. Waiting at least 6 months should allow for all official patches to be released also for the new game.

Same situation with Civ IV, Civ V about now...

I hadn't thought of that, that the New Vegas DLC would most likely be coming out on Steam rather than GFWL. If that is the case, anyone that's complaining about Steam needs to have their head examined.

I did that once Fallout 3 came out. I abandoned Oblivion and didn't mod it anymore. When I got Fallout 3 I uninstalled Oblivion completely. I went back to it for a little bit but to me it's not as stable as FO3 so it was constant CTD's. I just gave up in the end and came back here. I haven't been back since.

For NV I'll do as I do for every new game - finish the game totally vanilla, then maybe on the third playthrough start modding it and/or looking around to see what's been done for it that I might want.
I don't know yet if I'll abandon FO3. Depends how much NV occupies me. If I disappear for a few days then possibly :)

I don't know if I'll mod for NV. It depends greatly how much different it is, the less the better. I don't get a lot of time to mod, and porting to new structures or environments can be like starting a mod from the ground-up all over again. This is a great disincentive for mods that have years of work in them.

If I was being paid to mod, that'd be a different story, because then I could spend time doing it. As a hobby, I doubt I'll be able to support F3 and NV, and F3 is already here.

FOSE will be one of the serious issues that determines how well the FO:NV modding scene will be.

What I'm wondering is whether the FO:NV GECK will finally give modders the ability to add new animations, for example for holding and using weapons that require different handholds. That was one of the biggest weaknesses, in my opinion, with the FO3 GECK. It would be one of the things I would request if I knew where the developers of FO:NV would hear it.
