with the recent "resurgence" of fantasy

Post » Fri Jul 22, 2011 11:24 am

I am speaking towards the new Conan movie,
the recent Hit HBO series, Game Of Thrones

and of course the END of Harry Potter....

will these things help skyrim because of the feel of the game?

particularly in the former...

and is there any other "media, pop culture" nuances that I missed?

these are the first three that pop in my head when I think, akin to skyrim

I'm actually worried people might get burned out on it, but maybe not. Fantasy has always been a very popular genre, in fact, it's the oldest one. Speaking of the new Conan movie, that franchise has gone from short stories in a magazine, to reprints in paper back, to comic books, to movies, to pen and paper games, to NEW comic books, and of course, the new movie.

I think stuff as specific as zombies and pirates will have the general populace get bored pretty quickly, although there will always be a certain subset of fans who watch/read/buy anything with their favorite subject. Fantasy is broad enough that you have many fans, and many individual styles. I think overall tho, "geek" genres like fantasy and sci-fi are becoming increasingly more popular and accepted, and while you still have movies like Transformers, (which was kind of a geek thing at first) theatres are no longer packed with mindless action movies like the 80's and 90's, and the ones that are generally lampoon the ones of the past, and embrace the ridiculousness of one guy going in guns blazing against terrorists/drug dealers/mercenaries.

I personally feel like, if anything, those things are copying off of my bowl of Skyrim, not the other way around .

Seems like it can only help. Especially now that Game of Thrones is the most popular show on tv now and that it matches Skyrim in tone.

now all they have to do is up the brutality in Skyrim and it might attract more people from GoT

I've started reading The Game of Thrones, and it has made me anticipate Skyrim more. So I imagine its doing the game good.

The way I see it, the people who will play Skyrim will play it regardless of what's popular, and people who are just now getting into the whole fantasy deal will want something good to play, so they'll get some Skyrim action.

i think bethesda should create the game exactly how they are creating the dragons in it. todd said that they didnt feel that dragons had ever been done well in a game so they took the standard fantasy dragons and did them right. imo they could have just done that with the whole game and i would have been thrilled, just do everything that is in standard fantasy (elves, dwarves, wizards, castles,...) but just worry about doing it flawlessly. Probably just me but i would rather have them do that than try to be too creative and fail. Yes i just said try to be too creative, im not trying to say being creative is a bad thing. I guess what im trying to say is that i really dont want everyones perspective of what a classic fantasy atmosphere is to die. I dont think it ever will.

that's what they've been doing since Redguard. everything before that was pretty standard high fantasy, but with Redguard they completely overhauled everything in pursuit of originality and a unique feel. even if things seem familiar there's far more depth and history to it than meets the eye.

honestly, compared to pretty much every other fantasy cRPG setting - Gothic, Dragon Age, Amalur, whatever - the Elder Scrolls is pretty much on the level of Tolkien or Martin in depth.

Seeing how it works in reverse: I found game of thrones after hearing about it on these forums and fell in love with the series, started the books etc

Although as a standalone experience I am sure it is great, but for some reason I feel as if my desire for any "Skyrim-y" enhanced my experience and made the series grab hold of me and addict me faster than it would have if the Skyrim hype effect had been absent.

I feel as if it could work in the opposite direction just as well. I mean the similarities are pretty striking. Game of Thrones focuses on a northern family in a medievel fantasy realm. Skyrim is a northern area of a medievel fantasy realm. There were dragons in both these realms at some point.

Although I'm not certain it will drag in a ton of new players, I'm sure there will be some affect. Certainly not a negative one
