Women over 30 and Skyrim

Post » Sun Nov 21, 2010 2:49 am

There have always been female gamers, we just tend to keep quiet for the most part be it either due to males who have issues accepting the idea, or some narrow concept that it's yet another male only thing or for kids or some silly nonsense.

Gaming appeals to all ages, any gender and so on. More gaming, less narrow concepts towards who can and can't game.

And more RPG's! With gender choice! Women can hack a dragon to pieces too!

You kidding? Guys love gamer chicks almost as much as we love redheads. I combination of the two is mystical and magical, and sought by nerds world over.

I'm with you. Internet fistbump, or whatever is in nowadays.

Doesn't seem strange or out of place to me. One of my friends fits into the category herself, whilst I fail to meet one of the criteria. You get to guess which one.

:internet-fistbump-or-emote-of-equal-value:

I'd like to add, I can't imagine why anyone, especially anyone on these forums, would find any of this a bad thing. If I met a woman I was interested in that was a gamer, AND she actually liked to play the same games I do... well I would consider myself very lucky.

On the flip side, there are certainly women out there that think advlt men who are gamers are weird, not to mention there are a ton of other stereotypes that come along with this. More gamers of all types will help dismiss these stereotypes. Also... gamer girls(that terms applies to women gamers of all ages IMO) are always more interesting anyways.

I'm a woman, 32 years now and I got a profession in law but do this only part-time at the moment. About ten years ago I loved to play RPGs, especially TES: Morrowind including the addons. Later, I tried Oblivion and I was stoked. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to play a lot.

Now, that I hear that Skyrim is going to be released, I feel myself pulled back ten years, getting excited again like as I was ten years younger, lol! :liplick:

I know that nowadays, most of the players are male and I think they're in their 20's or so.
What do you guys think? I'm going to be 33 soon...Is it kinda weird that somebody like me really want to dive into another world like Skyrim again?

Can't wait for this game!

Welcome to the forums, have a http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg But I really can't vote in your poll but I don't think it's weird to do that. I'll be playing video games until the day I die and then even then I'll have my PC buried with me. Luckily my fiancee plays video games too so I don't have to worry about a spouse that looks down on my for playing video games even though I don't see any logical reason that it makes you a child. I don't see why you can't have fun as you get older.

I am a 60 year old woman.

Let me tell you a short story. On Dec. 11th I turned on the VGA planning to read a book and keep 1/4 of an eye on them, just in case. When the robed guys appeared I went to stand in front of the TV so I could see over my reading glasses better. When Mr. Howard appeared and started to speak I started screaming and jumping up and down. My husband rushed up from his workshop in the basemant right under me, afraid one of the cats was dying or I was bleeding or something.

All I could say was, "It's Skyrim! It's Skyrim!!!"

"Oh, is that all?"

And he wandered back to his basemant and I ran into the computer to see what was happening here.

I'm not hooked at all. I stop any time.

But why would I ever want to?

I think that due to overpopulation and longer life spans in the future, the majority of people on Earth will spend most of their time in virtual worlds anyway. To know what it is like to walk through a forest and see what wildlife looked like, you will have to wear a pair of virtual goggles and plug yourself in. It's the future.

I'm a 30-something woman and love the series.

My husband came in once while I was meticulously dragging objects around to decorate my Skingrad house. He lol'ed. That's not his idea of a good time, apparently.

If it's good enough for Wynne, it's good enough for me. Except may I substitute an Ipod for my knitting? :P

And now that you are running away, there is no chance I can catch you at my age.

Summer, you hunt moose every year. And do major fishing. And go berry-picking with bears.

I wouldn't stand a chance.

Lol. I think it is something about the fact that when I was growing up the first real computer games started to show up...I had a Commodore 64, later an Amiga 500/2000, then a PC. RPGs were just part of my life. And that didn't change.

Why should being a woman over 30 matter at all, this isn't the 90's where games are for children and nobody is judging anyone so why do you believe you need to be judged?

I know you're getting a lot of crap for starting this topic, but I feel like I know why you did it!

These forums are full of complaints about school or parent conflicts (relating to TES). It seems like the bulk of the activity on these forums is carried on by the younger crowd and it makes me feel old as dirt!

Still, I don't think the general demographic for TES is as young as these forums would lead one to think.

Skyrim makes me crazy excited, and I'm a few short years younger than you and just as female. I say you're one cool mama :)

I'm a woman in my late 30s. I played my first computer game on a TRS-80 (Temple of Apshai) and got hooked on rpgs with the Bards Tale series on an IBM computer. Been playing all kinds of games since then, but my favorite genre is still rpgs.

My favorite game of all time is Oblivion (though I love Morrowind too).

It`s nice to see there is still a few older Gamers out there

My partner is 49 and likes to game when she has time. She had already found Morrowind when I first met her and then I got Oblivion for her..
hearing her giggles as she pilfered all sorts of cheap rubbish from NPC`s houses..that was just priceless. Whenever she played, i`d be hearing "STOP YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE LAW!" every 10 minutes lol.

I`m just about to turn 42 (I tell myself i`m just in my prime lol) and have been a hardcoe gamer since I was about 12. Went through the whole range of Computers - ZX81, Vic 20, Sinclair Spectrum, Amiga500, early DX-PC`s etc.
Over the years i`d had other partners and it never worked out as I was never interested in sitting watching Soap Operas on TV every night (Ugh). My partner and I have been together for around 8 years now and i believe thats because of the whole compatibility thing.

I think it`s great that there a lot of Female gamers out there! When I hear Gamers say they are in their 60`s and 70`s, I`m like "Wow" - thats just fantastic. More power to ya!

I reckon I`ll be gaming until either my arms fall off or they nail my wooden box shut

Everyone who now laughs at older gamers will come to senses when they age themselves and will have the revelation that time passes incredibly fast and you don't just quit gaming because of that.
I salute all the gamers of all ages, happy gaming to y'all

why why why when a woman evolves in a community majoritarily male they often feel the need to shout "hey guyyyyys....I'm a womaaaan, and I'm thereeee....come talk to me guyyyyssss..." why communicating so much on their gender ?
attention whoring and you know it.

I think a lot oldschool TES fans are older than the "normal" game player age.
I myself am 27, and probably still be playing games (especially TES) when I'm 80 (If I still live than).

Yeah, I get that impression myself. But I'm sort of young compared to a lot of my other Daggerfall friends I know in real life. Only 22 here.

I'm 62 years old and female. Pseron Wyrd introduced me to Oblivion last year. I'm excited about playing Skyrim.

*waves at Pseron*

My boyfriend and I had a chat about this a few weeks ago and about how people my age (26) were the first real gamer generation. I know that there will be hardcoe people who played Pong when they were 25 and have aged from then, but people my age are really the first ones who had games around from birth and have literally grown with them. I think this is going to result in us being the first generation to have children and really play games with them as opposed to 'joining in' with them. Our skill level will be similar to theirs and they won't have this huge advantage :celebration:

Considering the ages of some of the people in this thread, male and female, I think the community evolved around them. They were gaming before there was a "community", whether mostly male or not.

What does that have to do with a single player game?

Not to mention how many guys I've seen admit they play as female in multiplayer/online games to get stuff from other people who are more interest in hitting on a female than playing a game. The hitting on/harassment is also why a lot of female players don't admit it. If they want to play, they don't want to deal with the guys.

50 year old male gamer here. I find it slightly sad that gaming should still be viewed as a young male thing to do. Very few of my similarly aged friends of either six will admit to gaming (other than the odd game of minesweeper and ther like). On the other hand my teenage nephews think I'm way cool.

I do however think that times are changing. Like someone said, the people who have grown up with gaming all their lives are now in their late 20s, and have no reason to stop playing. Maybe there will always be a majority of male gamers, but I'm sure that when I'm in retirement anxiously awaiting ES VIII there will be a lot more older gamers and a lot more female gamers.

Actually I just realised that I spent last Saturday afternoon playing Super Mario Kart with a 45 year old lady (and being comprehensively beaten), and at no point did I think we were doing anything unusual.
