Women over 30 and Skyrim

Post » Sat Nov 20, 2010 3:30 pm

My Significant Other is a woman over 30. She doesn't just play Elder Scrolls games, she is also a well-known modder. We actually met and fell in love on these forums. ;)

Now, that I hear that Skyrim is going to be released, I feel myself pulled back ten years, getting excited again like as I was ten years younger, lol! :liplick:

I know that nowadays, most of the players are male and I think they're in their 20's or so.

What do you guys think? I'm going to be 33 soon...Is it kinda weird that somebody like me really want to dive into another world like Skyrim again?

Can't wait for this game!

Cool feeling huh?

I believe the average age of male gamers is in the 30's now. (Though I'd agree it's younger with TES games.) I'll be 40 in April.

I think it's great personally, welcome back to being a kid.:)

You, me and thousands of others. :foodndrink:

This is veering off-topic, sorry... but I lol'd the first time I read that Terry Pratchett plays Oblivion. I hadn't seen it coming, yet at the same time it made perfect sense.

I think the series appeals very widely due to the world and the stuff you can do in it being so fleshed-out compared to other games - it's not just a 'game' in the old-school, Space Invaders sense where there's one objective and one way to do it. You are given a fantasy world and some game rules (skills, levelling), and do what you want from there.

30 isnt reallly that special. You are still young and barely out of your twenties. Youll have to go to 40 before i start getting surprised.

I got two uncles at 43 and an aunt at 41 that plays both PC and console games. At first i thought it was a little wierd, but Hey, playing games is fun. You cant set some kind of age-limit on having fun.

I'm 26 now and will STILL be playing games in my 30s. I plan to be like the blond in The Guild who just puts her kids in a playpen and puts them in another room. ;)

Ew. You just reminded me of a case a couple years ago about that thing in real life. The kid died. Bastards :swear:

Yep, older gamers are on here, and I know of two Grandmas on here as well. :)

I demand Bethesda to take you into the studio and let you test play starting from today. :toughninja:

Agreed.

I know I do! :P Not 30 yet, but I have no intention to stop gaming as I get older - hobbies and interests are a great thing. My Mum thinks gaming is for kids and I should've grown out of it (I'm 23), but she goes fishing, and I'd rather spend a day defeating legendary creatures and toppling Gods than trying to outwit a fish.

Haha! Well said. I have a guy on my x-box live friends list who is a huge elder scrolls fan and he's 60 something. :foodndrink:

I know many women who are around 30 who play shooter games, and TES seems much more "normal" compared to shooters!

It's really much more fun to play with women, as they usually have different tactics, (and from what I've seen, are also more team players), than men.
Talking 'bout shooters still.

Always: Gamer mamas are awesome! :goodjob:

I'm pushing 30 as well, I'm a woman and I love TES games to! :) Not only that but I have a number of friends who can say the same. So no, wanting to play Skyrim is not weird. video games are just another form of entertainment - you don't stop watching movies as you grow older, or reading books, so why stop playing video games? An ability to play in human being is a sign that we have not stopped in our development :)

Quite normal, I think. I played with a lot of women over their 30's when I was playing SWG and LoTRO.

I've always believed the gamer demographic relies more on a generational thing than an age thing. 10 years ago gamers were starting to get in their 20s, now they're starting to get in their 30s. We grew up with video games so that's kinda our thing.

My mom is excited for Skyrim as well. I don't think she would appreciate me spreading her age around on the internet though. Needless to say, I am 20.

Same. Except the bit about being a blonde girl. That is most assuredly not my plan.

Seriously. <_<

I'm a bit concerned about the folks that voted 'weird' though. I hate that they aren't comfortable with imaginative women.

I'm a woman, 32 years now and I got a profession in law but do this only part-time at the moment. About ten years ago I loved to play RPGs, especially TES: Morrowind including the addons. Later, I tried Oblivion and I was stoked. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to play a lot.

Now, that I hear that Skyrim is going to be released, I feel myself pulled back ten years, getting excited again like as I was ten years younger, lol! :liplick:

I voted you 'one cool mama', Fitgal 1978. Congratulations on your career. Now, stop counting (belt it out with Dizzy Gillepsie, 32...'going on 22') and start living.

What is it about Skyrim that has you most excited?

Would you use the presence of advlt aged female gamers as reason Bethesda should be mindful to include content attuned to or reflective of that demographic?

Race you to November and Happy (early) Birthday,

- Kitten

At least half probably voted that way out of spite. People do get tired of such a huge deal being made of female gamers, I hear. I like to think that many people don't actually find it strange. I hope.

I'm 62 years old and female. Pseron Wyrd introduced me to Oblivion last year. I'm excited about playing Skyrim.

No. I would find the username fitgal1978 weird for an almost 33 year old human of any gender, however.

EDIT: And I find the general concept of people seeking confirmation among other gamers that their specific demographic is acceptable for gaming weird in and of itself. It's baffling really.

You need to have a bit of age to properly appreciate a game. You'll have experienced more television, far more books, stories, and culture.

You'll likely have watched games progress from game boards and dice, to arcades and the first generation of consoles.

In fact its almost easy to make games for kids. I look back at some of the pap I played on those and the only reason I did was I was a kid and didnt know any better lol

Games have came a long way.... that they can appeal to any age, and especially someone more mature, proves how amazing they can be.

I dont find it surprising, in fact I find it invigorating to know that gaming is ageless.
