Won't find "CD"

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 1:41 am

Well, I posted this in a general help thread but nothing happened, so I suppose I'll make a new topic instead.

So, I've had Daggerfall installed before, but I figured that now that it's been released for free I might as well download it since it ought to be 100% working.
I uninstalled my previous copy and installed this, and everything works fine. But when I try to patch it, it just won't work.
When DosBox starts, I have configured it to do this:

mount d D:\Games\Dagger\DFCD -t cdrom -label Daggerfallmount c D:\Games\Dagger\INST -freesize 1000c:

INST is the folder I installed the game in and DFCD is the CD folder I downloaded.
I've put the patch in the install folder, and through DosBox I now type dag213 and the patching starts.
The patch prompts me for a "y" 3 times, but then it just stops and says it can't find the CD and that I should please insert it.

What am I doing wrong here?

Well, you install it through drive D:\>, not C:\>, which seems to be the problem.

And the code box is huge because you typed codebox and not code.

Huh? So I'm supposed to be in the CD drive and run the patch through the install-folder drive or what?

As I said, I've installed the game and I'm trying to patch it.

Hmm... did it say C:\DAGGER> when you typed in DAG213?

No, it said c:\>, since that's where I've installed Daggerfall. I've installed it in D:\Games\Dagger\INST\, so I mount that exact folder so that I won't have to switch folders and so on.

Then it is going to be hard to help you...

when you get to C:\, or wherever you have it, type cd dagger. Then run the dag213 patch. The cd changes the directory, which you need to do.

Why would I need to change directories if I'm already in the right folder?

Ri-iight.

In case you haven't understood this yet: I can start the patch, and the patch runs just fine until it gets to the fixmaps part, where it doesn't find the CD.

I recommend doing exactly what the guide says to do. Renaming and having different files can just make it confusing and make you mess up.

Mr. Oblivion may be correct. It's entirely possible the Fixmaps part is hardcoded to look for C:\DAGGER. That'd be a bug, but I'd suggest reinstalling, this time using your games directory as your C drive, and letting it install the game to what dosbox is calling C:\DAGGER, and see if it works.

Heck, it's not like it writes to the registry or anything, so you don't even have to delete the old copy. Just give it a shot.

Why reinstall if I can just rename the folder? :)

I'll try it out.

EDIT: Well, how about that. It seems that installing the game as anything else than C:\DAGGER\ makes the patch unable to find the CD,
which should have nothing to do with where the game is installed. Why wouldn't it be able to find the CD if it's just the install itself that's not in the right place? DOS FTW.
Thanks for the help.
