Wondering how many players use Intense Training?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 12:28 am

That's all I was just curious of the players here how many use the "Intense Training" perk and if so, how many times?

Thanks, G

My current character who is level 37 and I only picked once for luck, because Luck 3 is bad for casino gaming. One intense training for Luck and Luck implants should fix my loosing problem in casinos.

I took all of them. I know some people veiw it as a waste of perks, but I like getting a boost to my derived stats (carry weight, criticals, hp, earlier red blips on compass, etc.)

I decided not to take this; it raises your SPECIAL from 40 to 41 total I believe, an increase of a mere 2.5%. I think there are better perks to choose from.

It can be taken 10 times.
Some people love it, I personally never take it.

I think it makes character's more unique if you don't take it, not to mention that, unless you're getting the SPECIAL point to unlock new perks in the future, it's probably not worth it.
To be honest, I'd even argue it's sort of a waste (unless used to unlock the ability to take another perk in the future) because many of this game's perks are so powerful, you want as many perk slots as possible.

Why didn't you use a poll for a thread like this?

Anyway, I don't see the point to using Intense Training, when I create a character that's that, that's the SPECIAL it has, that's what physical/Intellectual/influencial (dis)advantages the character has and I don't like using a perk system to maximize my character like som sort of demi-god.

If I make my character have 3 in Perception then it's cause (s)he has crap eyesight, I'm not gonna make him/her a cyborg by using implants nor magically get 7 in Perception through perks.

Initial SPECIAL is my SPECIAL, unless there is something forced on me then I don't get SPECIAL increasing perks or implants as it ruins what I create the character to be to begin with.

Depends. Sometimes I want the ability to get some perks I wouldn't normally be able to get. Usually I'll work implants in when considering my SPECIAL. Like taking 5 ST for strong back and then an implant to get the 6ST for Burden to Bear. You know stuff like that. Was kinda sad that the increase in ST from OWB wasn't a permanent increase. It's not like you can take away the +1 ST after the DLC is over with. Might have caused problems for those entering with 10ST.

But yeah I use Intense Training sometimes. Usually with Endurance because it gives you health and another implant slot.

It depends on what type of build I'm playing. I think it's the best option for a melee/unarmed build at lvl 2.

I feel like SpacemanSpiff. Anytime you can affect the derived stats, you should go for it. It really impacts your game.

i pick it for the first perk instead of ladykiller or confirmed bachelor, and i've only used it to increase luck or strength, mainly to make casino trips more lucrative. Using all ten seem like a waste to me, after a few levels the perks get way better

The only times I take it is if I'm doing Who-would-survive-longest-in-the-Courier's-shoes? playthrough if the initial 40 points don't match the character I'm playing as.

Well some of them are simply not -THAT- crucial.

STR, unless you aim to use every single weapon possible, isn't in high demand. With a starting STR of 5, you can effectively get the maximum of 10 STR with the proper quests completed, the implant and the strength implant.
Perception as a stat is made practically obsolete by a certain companion. It still has powerful perks tied to it, but once you have 6 perception then you're pretty much set.
Endurance you can always use more of.
Charisma isn't super important; it's a luxury.
Intelligence isn't super important; with 4 INT you can still max many of your skills.
Agility you can always use more of. Faster reload speed.
Luck you can always use more of. Increases your odds at the casinos (free money) and your crit increases your damage output.

So Endurance, Luck and Agility are really the only ones that seem to constantly add direct benefit.
Besides, as I said there's several powerful perks, and Intense Training sort of kills replay value imo; it makes characters feel same-y. Overall though, there's definitely perks that trump Intense training spam. For example, instead of adding a point to agility, Rapid Reload is a bigger bonus, as is Action Boy. Instead of adding a point to Endurance, Life Giver provides a bigger bonus. Instead of adding a point to Luck, Finesse is a far greater bonus. Thus, as I originally said, Intense training is a perk best saved for unlocking other perks your character otherwise doesn't have access to.

What are the quests? I've got +2 from OWB and the implant...

I use it but I don't over use it. I think it was a mistake for the devs not to put a cap on it.

OWB is it really. But OWB + the implant + weapon handling is 5 Strength, so yeah wtf. That's quite a bit.

I modded my game extensively, setting the minimum level required to get Intense Training to 12 as one of the things changed. I'm of the opinion that if you want to increase your character's attributes, you have to bite the bullet and soldier on with what you have at the beginning. Not to mention that these perks come right when more lucrative ones start becoming available, as opposed to the first few levels where they're generally better than what else is left. Makes the selection process more interesting.

But just to answer the original question; I seldom ever use it. Maybe once at most, just to use a certain weapon, or qualify for a more lucrative perk in the future.

Yes. My first two games I used IT way too much. Now I'm taking perks earlier that I used to take late because I needed to fill a slot. Gonna try stuff like Robotics Expert and Animal Friend.

Unless you need it to unlock another perk (or maybe a conversation option?) for the future, I don't think it's all that great outside of maybe being used as a "filler" if there's nothing else you want or need at that time.
