Wont dragon shouting cause avalanches?

Post » Wed Jun 15, 2011 1:09 am

it is a common known fact that if you shout on a snowy mountain you will possibly cause an avalanche.

well last time I checked skyrim was full of snowy mountains.

do you think avalanches would be a good idea?

Ummm, no. It may be realistic, but it's insane for a developer to gimp a player that likes the dragon shouts because there is always the chance to cause an avalanche by using the shout in the mountains. Dropping explosives on a snowy hillside would give you your desired effect and would let everyone use the shouts unhindered.

Also: Using magically-detonated explosives (to keep the "it wouldn't feel like TES" people from complaining) would let you use the environment as a weapon.

It would be awesome I think. I'd love it.

However, Bethesda doesn't seem very eh... "ambitious" to do much technical stuff though so I (sadly) really doubt we'd see avalanches.

Also props to the first developer that manages to put an actual avalanche in a game. I imagine industry/NASA standard computers are needed to accurately simulate an avalanche.

Shouting as a cause for an avalanche is pure myth.

Gameplay >>> Realism for any sane developer. Realism is only good as long as it somehow helps the game (in terms of gameplay, atmosphere and the cost for making it, balancing it and making is useful).

Shouting as a cause for an avalanche is pure myth.

who is talking about Shouting?
We are talking about Dragon Shouting -_-

What experience in game development do you have?? You seem very quick to pass judgment about what Bethesda should be doing on the technical side of things, so I'm wondering where your opinion comes from.

well, they could program one for each mountain, or, there are ways to make it look good without adding physics to every snowflake.

but, I think it might be a bad idea... you shout at a group of wolves, throw them back and before you can kill them, you fail 5 quests cuz the avalanche you triggered took out riverwood... the merchant is dead, so is his wife, his son, his dog and his neighbors. the kid who would bring you your sword back is repeatedly falling unconcious under 20ft of snow, the lady who points you to the golden claw is dead and arrows will no longer be made... oops.

would still be cool, but the quicksave spamming before all shouts would get tedious...

Obviously. There's still no way a shout is going to displace enough snow to cause that.

What I've experienced in other games and what Bethesda has shown us now and before in their games.
It's my honest and non-"really devoted fan" opinion.

I would quite like to see it but then the consequences of having an avalanche happen wouldn't be implemented for example forests knocked down, near by towns completely destroyed etc... And also what would happen to the huge amount of snow left over, it would make a place inaccessible so its quite a lot to ask for an avalanche and would be a possible game ruiner in my own opinion.

Also the technology to create all of that would require a lot of money so it's not really worth it.

So I'll take that as no experience in game development?? Perhaps if you get a degree in game development, or get a few years in the industry, then come back and we can have a proper discussion :P.
