Wood Elves are lookin'... shady...

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 4:17 pm

I didn't see another thread like this in the first four pages, so I'm assuming that I'm all good.

Alright, so it has occurred to me that the entire Bosmeri (or Wood Elven, to those who aren't hip) race has undergone dramatic skin tone changes since previous games.
Let's put our thinking caps on and recall Oblivion, where the Bosmer were white (light skinned, Caucasian, beige, 0xEAD1A5, whatever you want to call it). http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/4256204229_d5be6c2350.jpg
And even further down the road was Morrowind, where the Bosmer expressed similar hues and tones to that of their Oblivion counterparts. http://www.gamebanshee.com/morrowind/races/woodelffemale.jpg
Even the http://images.uesp.net/0/0e/Lore-race-Bosmer.png for their entire race seems to have lighter skin.

So, with all that on the table, I've deducted that either the Dunmer males all died during Morrowind's unfortunate collapse and the women started breeding with only Bosmer, or the Wood Elves of Skyrim have taken on a very odd complexion, given their past.

Hm... Gametrailer's Bosmer, Prometheus. It's broad daylight, so you can't argue that it's dark out.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8613775/Skyrim/SkyrimBosmer/p6Br1.jpg
And Ripten's Bosmer... with an undeclared name...

Let's face it, both of these guys look like Dunmer. Now, I'm not trying to be racist or whatever you might accuse me of, I'm just curious about why did they change their skin color.

Bethesda didn't manage to create good looking Bosmers in Morrowind and Oblivion, looking at the http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Bosmer they succesfully created the race this time.

I have to wonder if that skin tone is default. I also wonder if they are still shorter than everyone else. I ALSO wonder if the female bosners will still look hot, as they were about the best looking female elves in MW and OB.

That lore didn't describe what they looked like at all did it?

I have to wonder if that skin tone is default.

The journalist randomized the character (except for the hair), and also admitted himself that he thought it looked like a Dunmer instead of a Bosmer.

Bosmer look great, but I think they look too close to Dunmer in general.

Indeed we are... At least someone is getting it right... Though I could care less if anyone truly respects me or my kinsmen...

No, But they weren't like Oblivion's Bosmer, They were Cannibals, They look more Vicious than the Adoring fan.

The bosmer in http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8613775/Skyrim/SkyrimBosmer/p6Br1.jpg have a light skin with dark facial warpaint. look at his torso belly and hands.
The new bosmer appearance looks so natural and cannibalistic, the old bosmers (at least in oblivion) feels tamed.

There will probably be a defining difference. So far, Dunmer look much sterner, and Wood Elves' skin looks more earth-toney than ash-grey.

Cannibalization doesn't result in the taking on of different physical characteristics. I don't know why people think that.

You need to calibrate your monitor. Their skin does not have the same tone as dunmer. At all.

One of them has face paint that's a similar shade to redguards, but the rest of his skin is very pale. The other looks like the person who made it used the tone scales to make him tan, but there's just no way to mistake him for a dunmer.

That was my first thought too - the first example did look darker, but that guy looks pretty pale to me.

As it has been stated before, the skintones that we've seen so far have been dependant on those who create the character and adjust the skin type... There will, hopefully, be a few more reasons or changes for people to notice than a mere "skintone"...

Exhibit A the face is in shadow. If you lookat the top/back of his head you can see a lighter shade of skin, same as when you look around his shoulders.

The skintone doesn't mean anything I think, if you want to, I bet you could make a blue Nord, or a pink Orc.

It matters in relation to what may be the norm in the gameworld. I hope the average Bosmer NPC doesn't look like a Dunmer.

They literally look nothing like dunmer. And neither of those characters were NPCs designed by bethesda.

No but it makes sense for a carnivorous race to have feature's that's suited for eating meat and lots of it.

To be honest, I don't really see the fuss. Take your Bosmer in the shadows, and it's skin will turn more pale :P.

The journalist who made one of them, and TONS of people who didn't know it was a Bosmer before it actually was confirmed, disagrees with you.
