woodcutting should NOT be a mini-game..

This is going completely off topic, and it saddens me when I read your post.

Anyway, because of the irrelevancy of your post, I'm just gonna bring up what's relevant for the topic:

Trees can be destructible in Skyrim. They can be destructible in a shooter. They can be destructible in Mario and in any other RPG than Skyrim. It is not related to the game-type at all.
The technology has developed a lot as the years have gone by. It's really cool and liked by a lot of people. That's why it has become so popular.
It makes things more fun, more realistic. Battles and otherwise meaningless events (like woodcutting and dragon's crashing!) can become more fun and cool.

I think it would be a great addon for woodcutting in Skyrim. It's obviously not the hardest thing to do and it can also be done so trees are "restored" after a period of time.
Destructible environment is made in real-time.

The topic is woodcutting being a minigame, not whether or not the environment is destructable. Please dont report me for pointing this out.

We won't be able to cut down every single tree in the entire game world. Performance issues. 'Nuff said.

My thoughts exactly. Without a mini game, well.... well you're just chopping wood.

One of the things I like about TES series is that they don't have mini-games for the sake of having mini-games. In Oblivion the speechcraft and lockpick mini-games were more so gameplay mechanics then they were games. I didn't play lockpicking for fun or to win money i did it to get through a door. Same with speechcraft, I used it (rarely) to increase a persons disposition so i could get some info out of them. I really hope that there are no card game/gambling type mini games or woodcutting/work (Fable) type mini-games in Skyrim. Most "RPG" games have these mini-games to artificially increase gameplay hours which TES games never have done and I have always respected the series for that.

If its not a minigame it poses the question of how do you cut them? The answer, that we have come up with at least, is through tree destruction.
Of course it could just be a menu thing, like picking ingredients, but thats boring, nothing to talk about there.

Its a bit off topic, but thats because the topic of minigame or not was covered pretty thoroughly, and the topic moved on to, well how would it be done.

Honestly I was a skeptic before, but I think skyrim needs some tree destruction, what else happens if a dragon falls on a tree? And if thats the case, it would suit woodcutting well.

Realtime tree growth?

Not growth, but regeneration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtHjmYowv8Y
Notice though how the regeneration speed has been increased a lot in the video, just so that you can see it...

Actually the topic is about woodcutting in general, or if to be precise... being "NOT a mini-game". Destructible environment is very relevant for this topic since it's seemless and "keep immersion".
I only report when people break the rules.

Don't forget that we already have some kind of woodcutting with destructible environment in the game for logs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSRtYpNRoN0&feature=player_detailpage#t=80s
I personally don't see why it wouldn't be like that for trees as well. Would be kind of weird if you can cut logs into pieces, but not trees into logs? And being forced to have some kind of menu instead... ew I'd say.

Yes but tree destruction doesnt really pertain to wood cutting. A tree could be destroyed for example, in real time by a dragon. But that doesnt mean there will be real time wood chopping. Its two entirely different things. A dragon crashing into a tree and making it explode into a million splinters, isnt the same as chopping a tree down, and then proceeding to chop it into pieces.

So with that said its likely there will be some sort of tree destruction in the game, but it doesnt always apply to wood chopping. Not only that but like I said, I think it SHOULD be a minigame of some sort. There needs to be something fun or interesting about it otherwise I dont see the point.

I like the regeneration shown here. If it isn't a minigame this is how it should be for regen. As long as the branches don't fly of ridiculously like they did in the video. I have seen an AT-4 rocket hit a tree (Basic Training is fricken awesome) hit a tree and the branches didn't fly off like that lol.

Exactly. If you ever play Farcry rather than watching the video, the tree destruction was horrible. Its a great concept, but when you see huge chunks of tree and branches 'falling' off and onto the ground its not such a great idea, not to mention they disapear. It looked like if trees were made out of plastic, how they would react.

Well, I liked the Lockpicking minigame, and still do. But I didn't really like the Persuasion one. I don't really care what they do with Woodcutting. It can either be like Fable 2 (and 3) or like Crysis (where I can physically take down the trees with my weapon).

Ahh, but the realtime woodcutting could use the destruction engine.
How else would realtime woodcutting cut trees?

And as far as uses go, there has to be a point to it as well, im sure its just something they haven't shown us yet.
