Working backwards

My introduction to the Fallout series came with Fallout 3, which I loved. Now I am enjoying New Vegas. I constantly read people raving about how much they love Fallout 1 and 2 around here, but this is mostly coming from people who played those games first. As a longtime gamer myself, I can relate to this tendency to elevate the games of yesteryear that were so influential and exciting to me, but going back to play them again, I realize my enjoyment often stems largely from nostalgia, and some don't stand the test of time at all.

So, I'm wondering: Did anybody here play Fallout 1 or 2 AFTER playing Fallout 3 or New Vegas? And if so, were you glad you did?

I played them after I played Fallout 3. I don't think it had any effect on my enjoyment of them. They are most definitely showing their age, but they're still great games. There are mods, such as the high resolution mods, which can help bring them in line with more modern isometric games.

I say go for it. If you like the Fallout world, there's no reason not to play them.

I also started with Fallout 3 and then New Vegas. I never even knew the other games were on Steam and they are pretty cheap too. I was looking at them a couple nights ago and I'm considering trying them out. Graphics don't really mean that much as long as there is some solid gameplay involved.

I played the first two after being introduced to the series by 3. I'm incrediby glad I did, because I was blissfully ignorant of all the stuff that annoyed old-time fans about 3. I wasn't annoyed about Super Mutants or the BoS or any of that stuff, so could enjoy 3 unfettered.

As to the first two games: I was hugely impressed with the first one, even all these years later, but the second game left me cold. I think I'd have enjoyed it more when I was a teenager, maybe.

Well the graphics weren't great even when the game came out, but it's not like you're playing pong.

Many of the game's features are actually more complex and deep than Fallout 3 or NV despite the age, so if you like turn based isometric RPG's you'll like Fallout.

Oh, huh, combat system never even occurred to me. I hate turned-based combat in RPGs. Maybe I'll give it a shot because I already like the setting so much, though. Thanks for the responses!

I have read posts of members that came here from FO3, read about FO1&2, bought and played them, and came back here stating that they now understood what the 'old FO fans' were talking about, and some said they liked FO3 less than the earlier ones after playing all three. [admittedly a minority opinion ~but I'm in with them :hehe:]

Most of the FO fans here that put FO1 on a pedestal are not trying to 'elevate the games of yesteryear' ~its likely that most have it installed, and play the game (even within the last few months).
I own three retail copies of Fallout 1, and never run a PC without one of them installed. My first is the boxed set with Spiral manual, my last is the GOG installer ~this one is playable.
I can tell you that seven years later I still found stuff in Fallout 2 that I had not seen before (and I know that there are areas that I have not visited in the game).

In my book, FO1 is ranked in the top 7 RPG's of all that I have played. (and I played it last week)

Well if you hate turn based combat you might not like Fallout.

Lucky for you, there's a demo you can play for Fallout 1. Only 20 megabytes also.

The Fallout games do a decent job with turn based combat, though. It's hardly noticeable except when you're trying to run away.

I was introduced to the series by FO3

Then went to FO2 (cause I got tired of waitng for FNV

Now FNV

Playing fallout 2 made my hopes pretty high for FNV. IMO, the difficulty level and character creation / stat balance in FO2 is spot on.

I really expected FNV to be more like FO2. And it is, in some regards.

I just wanted to wanted a less forgiving character creation FNV.

I recommend playing the old ones if your a fan of the series, always cool to see evolution of the series over the past decade.

I started with FO3, I loved it and thought "Wow, This is the most original story i've seen in an RPG!" and then decided to buy and play FO1/2 and then I realized.. Fallout 3, Just ripped 99% of its story off.

the 1% is "DAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!111!Ii1i1"

But I love this game, And fallout 1/2.

I played Fallout 1 and 2 back then, when they came out. Those games are legends. Sort of like Sid Meier's Civilization or Pirates. They are both still very playable but graphics is dated and you will feel it. There are some mods which can make it bit more acceptable (see below).

If you decide to get and play those games, I recommend visiting this place first: http://www.nma-fallout.com/ and strip especially this section: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php of all its goodies.

I especially recommend to play Fallout 2 with this: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1097. It brings to game all things which designers decided to omit from game before release but are still hidden inside. Its like if you would add 25% of contend to New Vegas suddenly. Including locations, NPCs, quests. It also patches all known bugs which were left after last official patch.

There is unofficial patch for fallout 1 as well which is must.

I plan on picking up 1, and 2 real soon even though I did play them back in the day...

Although back in the day I was 15 years old. I skipped most of the story... was endlessly entertained just eating iguana (had a pet iguana)... and I only remember 3 things.

1. Iguana on a stick
2. I had no clue why everyone packed bottle caps, and did not loot them for half the game (again 15 years old + ADD == skip story let me shoot crap).
3. I was way into the game (felt like I had played it forever, but heck maybe just 3 hours into it) got ported to some on place, and a super mutant with a missle launcher killed me... again... and again... said screw this its unbeatable, and never touched it again.

However I was like the odd child out. I did not like the game, but loved the story so I kept up on lore, and when FO 3 came out as a shooter... OMG YEAH! Now that I have calmed down, and aged (far to much) I am going to give 1, and 2 another shot.

***edit***

Just pointing out reading about lore, and having lore shoved at you while you want to kill things are two different things... Back then I could read about it off game, but when playing... yeah its all about to shooten.

Techinally, the first Fallout I played was two, but I never got far and ultimately quitted out of boredom. Then I bought Fallout 3 and fell in love. I found the story and most of the factions very interesting, so I started reading about the earlier games from the Vault. (god bless Ausir) After reading through every article they had, I decided to give the originals another try. It happened so that I fell in love, again.

And now I'm this grumpy elitist who shakes his fist at everyone who prefers F3 over 1,2 or NV.

I played the originals after Fallout 3. I don't think they're bad games, but I don't think they're anything special and I just find the games to be boring. How much you like them depends specifically on you, however.

I played Fallout 3, then 1, then 2, then New Vegas. I have Tactics, but haven't played it. I might get around to it eventually when I get bored of New Vegas and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. I know everyone absolutely loved 1 and 2, but I honestly hated them. Don't get me wrong, the story was amazing, but the gameplay was down right horrible. I had to force myself to finish both of them, and I wouldn't have even done that if the story wasn't as good as it was. I'd say they are both worth atleast 1 playthrough, and some may like them and some may not, but I doubt I will ever play either one ever again.

I started off with Fallout 3, then I bought the trilogy pack at Target, playes Fallout, then Fallout 2 and then Fallout Tactics, 1 is a great story, F2 is basically a meh game, and IMO the 'it was remade mid development' is not an excuse. But the wide world in Fallout 2 was fun to explore. But I prefer the F3/NV groups.

I played the games in the order they were released, Fallout 1 back in the day a few months after it was released here. It's a game that really resonated with me in how it brought some of the PnP design to computer games (was heavily into PnP at the time) as well as a setting that... well, felt like they had actually put some thought into it. It was a game that was going against the grain even back then. Contrary to what many people believe, that type of gameplay was definitely not the norm in 1997.
It's what I consider my favorite game basically.

Fallout 2 is rather... all over the place I think. There were some nice enhancements to gameplay, and some of the roleplaying is downright amazing (I still think the faction interplay between the settlements is some of the best in RPGs). But the lows of the game are rather bad, with areas that feel very unfinished and some areas which feel completely out of place in the setting. Plus you have too much silly humor, and an overall much less tight design than F1.

Am not crazy about F3 myself. I think they got some things right though, mostly visually speaking. Stuff like the Vault tour in the Museum was very well done.

NV feels kinda like F2 to me. It has a great internal logic though which makes the world much more believable. But I still think a lot of things are really stretching it in terms of the setting. The most positive thing however is the return of player choice in the questsolving, and it is very well pulled off indeed. Just like F2 and F3, I believe it could've benefitted from a more focused design. But given how F3 and its large world was a success, there was just no way OEI could've won with creating a smaller game with more focus.

NV might end up being my fav Fallout game behind F1 though.

Fallout 2 was the first of the series I played, in 1999 or so. Then I played fallout 1 shortly thereafter. Fallout 1 is story-wise definitely the best of those 2 (to me at least), but fallout 2 simply had more replay value for me. I regularly go back to Fallout 2 because of the ongoing community updates for that game. Had my last playthrough this september.

I think it definitly matters that I've played those games before, and therefore care less about the graphics. But each time I play it, I'm suprised about the solid game-mechanics, the well designed combat system, character development etc. etc. It still is a very fine game.

If anyone thinks about playing it again (or for the first time) be sure to pick up the restoration pack, or atleast the unofficial patch. This allows a nearly bug-free experience, and compatibility for todays computers (high-res widescreen, 64bit).

No, I played FO1 & 2 in 99 and they were awesome then, and still are if you can now get past the graphics and the turn based combat. I know some people get spoiled with pretty graphics and exciting gameplay.. Okay I'm talking about myself :P
Personally I think they should modernize them (remake with new engines) since the franchise is just now REALLY taking off.. I mean, they do it with movies all the time, so why not with a video game?
In fact... Maybe they can be the first to remake (modernize) a video game, set a new trend and at the same time, forge a little slice of video game history! The first to remake and modernize a video game!
Meh, who am I kidding, it's probably been done already.

What do you mean "were" they are still awesome games! NV adds back alot of stuff yeah, but they did most of it only half way. I was really hoping for more "fallout" mechanics and less "oblivion" left overs from FO3 too.
