Working with/for Bethesda

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:13 pm

I'd really love to become a game developer, but I'm just about to start my preparations.

I noticed, that you have jobs available at Bethesda.
But what does it actually take to become a level designer for Skyrim for example?
What combination of skills must one have to be able to work with you guys?

Thanks in advance :)

You must be able to beat that karate guy in the gym, according to the behind the scenes movie. Are you up to it?

I imagine experience/degree or some such in a programming language like C++ would be a requirement for almost all jobs, even in the game design or art work.

EDIT: I would imagine that some experience with the Construction Set would be a real bonus too.

Have you tried making any mods?

This is not true. I can tell you that.

Example, if you are concept artist, why would you need to know how to code C++? That is not what you are hired to do, game industry is extremely specialised.

Yeah your probably right, I'm sure there are some jobs that don't require it. I was looking through their jobs and they seemed to want at least one language for most things.

You must acquire the needed skills. For example, learn photoshop well enough to photoshop Todd Howard into pictures with a bunch of prosttutes, then blackmail Todd into giving you a job :)

Ok, seriously though. It takes commitment, skill, passion and perhaps most importantly of all; personality. Bethesda is a very big company, they are so big now that they can pick the best of the best, so you gotta make sure that you are one of the best, and be the kind of person they want to work with.

To become a level designer?

Make levels on your own. Make levels on your own. Make levels on your own. Make levels on your own. Make levels on your own. ;)

You want to work at Bethesda? Show them what you can do with the Construction Set.
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/01/13/road-to-skyrim-the-todd-howard-interview.aspx describe how he got in the industry and how Bethesda hires new employees. That'll help.

Lots of experience and skill would be my guess. You should also try and specialize in something they lack so you have something to bring to the table that they don't already have.
