World size: about the same as Oblivion's

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:59 am

Why do you think a dev should "cater" to me or you? Who has said that? They should make their own decision, but they should listen to their fans and what they want and take that into consideration. As many fans as possible, they should listen to.

You think the world needs to be bigger. I don't. See where the problem lies?

Fallout 3's map was much better (even though it wasn't as small as I thought it was), the landscape was more varied and there were a lot of unique landmarks you could see from the distance. It was more compressed than Oblivion and exploration felt a lot more rewarding, because there were actual things to find.
Bigger worlds usually tend to be more empty.
That too. To me, FO3 seemed a lot larger, also due to the vast network of tunnels and caves, with danger around. Whenever I roamed the wasteland, I felt like I was exploring a vast post apocalyptic world. The DC area felt huge, despite being quite small compared to the rest of the map.

If you ask me, I have faith that Bethesda learned a lot of their lessons with OB and took a lot of what they learned and corrected it with FO3. I expect good things to come with Skyrim.

While I do think that a game wont be great because of the size of its gameworld I think that Skyrim could be bigger. My fear is that it will actually be smaller in reachable terrain due to all the mountains.

I hope it Feels like Morrowind size i really think Oblivion felt too small , way too small mainly for that crazy fast travel everywhere from the begining , my opinion of course :icecream:

Trust me, walk from Anvil to Cheydinhal. It takes a lot longer than walking from Balmora to Vos. I had no doubt Oblivion was bigger in feel or in actual landmass but that's just me I guess.

And like I said before people, it will feel much bigger with all the mountains and from the trailer it seems that sprinting was about the same speed as running in Oblivion was so your normal movement speed will probably be slower than in Oblivion, making the world feel MUCH bigger. Let's just hope it's not Morrowind's snail pace though :pinch:

I'd like a bigger size for Tes 6 but 100% handcrafted, not random. If they have the money and the time and the people they need they could do it 30%,50% bigger than Skyrim and we would feel the difference for sure. People who were disappointed should think twice if they wanted random landscape and repetitive dungeons and settlements, or go back to Morrowind's variation?

Sad face! :(

I wanted it to be bigger than OB. OB was kind of cramped, it felt like the size of my town.

I think there's no problem. As long as you give good reasons and show what most people want for the future. I also think Bethesda is smart enough to judge themself...

I LOVE the fact that so much is handcrafted in Skyrim. But exactly everything need to be 100% handcrafted? Not in my opinion, no. Trees, bushes, grass, foilage etc. That can all be randomized and still look natural. Far Cry 2 seem to have it nice in the video I showed... what I call random handcrafting.

It saves A LOT of time so that a bigger world would be possible without that much work needed. And it might even save time for lots of other things. But I shouldn't say too much ahead. Creation Kit might already got this feature? Idk. My guess is a no though, because Todd said before that the Creation Kit isn't really that different from previous world editors. Speculation open though.

Morrowind's dungeons had no variety and it's landscape was varied by unrealistically, having like 10 different ecosystems on the same tiny island and they abruptly changed instead of gradually like Oblivion, which is realistic and I enjoyed better. There was plenty of variety in the dungeons and landscape, you just had to be willing to take the time and notice.

I'm happy with the size of oblivion, especially with more hand work. IMO Daggerfall was too big (Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - 62,394 square miles, courtesy of http://www.actionradius.com/jdl/default.asp?id=1801&qty=1) thank god for fast travel huh? That would have been just too overwhelming without it.

I was expecting bigger, so the first reaction was
But then they told about the vertical development, about natural barriers, about going back to Morrowind level of exploration, and I think it's not that bad after all.
I am sure there will come one day when they can do more in less time, but for now I am very pleased if they can pull off a map like Oblivion's full of interesting and unique places to discover.

do any of you guys think that 1 or 2 cities could be part of a mountain, or even under ground cities just to save that bit of space?

My only concern is whether the *actually traversible* land is equivalent to Oblivion.

If that figure includes steep mountainsides that cannot be scaled (due to no levitation or climbing skill), then the actual landmass could be considerably smaller.

Honestly, the presence of *any* non-traversible land bothers me a bit. There should always be a way to reach any place in the world with the right skill. Saying goodbye to the "if you can see it, you can go there" principle of past games in orer to have realistic mountains is a hard tradeoff. I know mods will fix this, but I wish we could have both real mountains and full traversal right out of the box.

It would've been nearly impossible. It already takes days to walk from one side to the other (real world days). I would love to have TES games to be that big again and still be handcrafted but it's just unrealistic.

Darn I hope very much there is a climbing skill. And so should you! Don't give up hope man, don't! :P

All mountains can be reached... somehow. That has been said. So don't worry. I just hope it's actual climbing and not just mountain trails. Climbing would be so awesome. It would take time as well, making the world feel more big even so.

Personaly I would prefer a mix of computer generated and hand made with a much larger map. I like to go wander fairly far out in a game if I can but I dont want the devs to spend too much resources on the outer map regions.

Some generated dungeons mines and lairs.. towers and such... and alot of wilderness with wild and nasty monsters.
