world size smaller than oblivion.....

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2010 5:51 am

hello, i'm the official forum pervert, and i have watched the interviews with todd howard lots of times, and every time the world size is discussed, he says it is about the same as oblivion, but since you can't go onto the mountains, it will feel smaller. you have to go around the mountains. he also said it's a lot more dense, but i still feel that maybe mountains should've been accessible. looking at the map, there are a lot of mountains, and they are quite big....gonna take up a lot of the world space.....

You'll just have to wait and see. I wouldn't mind a smaller world with better detail.

yes they will, and don't let anyone tell you, you can go over them or through them....because they haven't played the game yet, gearing specifically what Todd says, they are ment to be obstacles, you move in between them. anything else is conjecture until the game arrives.

Perhaps he means the world space you can travel is the size of Oblivion's. Meaning that it's larger physically but inaccessible mountains make them relatively the same.
Or maybe we will be able to scale the mountains somehow.

Mayhap he meant that the space between mountains was about the same size as Oblivion.

"While the game’s pretty much the same size of Oblivion in terms of land mass, the inclusion of huge mountains – all of which you can climb to the top of, as well as often venturing within – means Skyrim has significantly more world to explore than its predecessor. “They create more time because you can’t just cut across them,” says Todd Howard."

You can and will traverse mountains.

Maybe... but if that were the case, he'd say so.

Except that he said if you can see something, you can go there. We can all see the mountains, so presumably we can go there. Who knows though, we will find out eventually.

Edit: It will probably be like Vvardenfell, where a single mountain creates a huge obstacle. Just think how hard it was go get around that place, it wasn't that the map was huge but the mountain in the middle made it harder to get from one side to the other.

Nope. I've done the math using the dry erase map from the GI tour vid.

OB = approx 4600 playable cells
SK = approx 4400 playable cells

That is just the main world space so there is no accounting for dungeon interiors and as was stated not every inch of the terrain will be traverse-able which is to be expected with a more vertical terrain. Size doesn't really matter in the grand scope of the game,(Morrowind proved that quite well) It's all how you use it.

I think the mountains will make the game feel bigger because you have to find your way trough the mountain, you can't just follow a straight line.

Morrowind's land is significantly smaller then Oblivion, but it sure doesnt feel that way.

If you use the land right you can make a gameworld seem signicifcantly larger. (plus morrowind also had the fact you couldnt just 'teleport' around to places you've been before, so you were often forced to walk it from the nearest town).

No no no, he said because the mountains are harder to travel through, it will feel BIGGER, not smaller.

Exactly. I was astonished to learn how much larger the landmass of Cyrodiil was compared to Vvardenfell. Vvardenfell took hours to walk across.

Morrowind made great use of a big mountain in the middle, and an absurdly small draw distance. (Three cells, I believe) Try using MGE, and all of a sudden you realize just how close Seyda Neen is to Vivec.

However, as noted, it felt larger because fast travel was only between towns. You had to walk to dungeons, or to outlying areas.

Skyrim should feel immense, because you won't be able to walk in a straight line for very long, before having to take switch backs, or climb mountains. Add in the absurd number of dungeons, which are supposedly much more unique, and I fully expect that Skyrim will feel enormous compared to Oblivion - which was really a big bowl.

Well the verticality of the game will make it larger if you think about it... if the land area is the same as oblivion, the vertical slopes in Skyrim will actually make more land-area, rather than if the land was simply flat or rolling hills(like oblivion). Of course not all parts of the mountain will be traversable, but we'll see after we dive into the game for a few hours.

Wouln't necessarily be a bad thing if the map turns out to be smaller than Oblivion. I expect the map will be a lot more detailed that way.

Doesn't Todd usually say that the mountains will make the game world feel large because you CAN go on them, and they add much more area vertically?

Well OBlivion was huge so even if it's smaller it will still be giant I bet. But also that probly doesn't count like inside the dungeons and maybe you can go through tunnels through the mountains and stuff that would actually be pretty epic. You have to fight your way from one side of the mountains to the other through goblin caves.

Heres hoping you have the option to buy a house on the top of a mountain, imagine the view. BTW the map size is a minor matter, there wil still be plenty of things to do and places to explore, that im sure of.

I think it will be smaller, especially when you consider all the extra-dimensional space in the oblivion gates. I don't see how skyrim could possibly match that, unless there's a lot of going in and under the mountains

Morrowind's PCs also run at a snail's pace compared to Oblivion's PCs (plus Oblivion has horses). Skyrim's PCs will likely be faster than even Oblivion's, though, with the teleportation dragon shout and, more importantly, the ability to sprint (which I will make full use of).

I'm sure even IF (key word "if") the world is small and player complain it's not big enough then they'll just make an expansion to make-up for their mistake ;).
