Worried about armor/clothing

Post » Sat Jun 19, 2010 11:40 am

We haven't heard a whole lot about armor. I am very worried that the armor will be treated like it was in Fallout 3 - meaning we will be able to equip a hat, rings, and then an overall "armor" item. Like fallout, no separate greaves, cuirass, boots, etc. What do you think the chances of this being true are, and is it something that you would be upset about?

Oh I'm sure it'll be like it has been in previous ES games. I would really not like it if they did that, but you really shouldn't worry. They haven't given us too many meaty details about equipment yet, so.

"We aren't making a Fallout game."

"What works in Fallout doesn't necessarily work in ES".

Those are quotes from Pete.

I very much doubt that. Bethesda has, it seems, been paying a lot of attention to the feedback of its fans, many of whom would be disappointed at anything less than separate slots for pauldrons. Even if that level of detail isn't reached, I'm nearly certain that armor will have at least as many slots as OB.

The way that Fallout 3 treated the armor was terrible.I really hope that they do it Morrowind style, where you can equip different gloves, and pauldrons.

No need to worry, bethesda knows what fans of ES want, and the are going to include at least the same slots as oblivion, if not more.

I think (hope) armor will be treated as it was in Morrowind, or even Oblivion.

although i am sort of incredulous that everyone is assuming that we will have oblivion-like armor options.

think about it

oblivion had less options than morrowind. fallout 3 had less options than oblivion. every rpg that beth makes, our options become more limited. first they took away pauldrons, then they merged boots/shirt/pants. None of the screenshots I have seen have given me any hope that this will not be the case. it looks like everyone is wearing matching, one-piece, fallout-style armor.

Pete already confirmed it won't be like Fallout.

Fallout has always been like that since the first game. My worry is there won't be enough different armor types.

Yes, of course, it's so clear how did not saw this before!

This all part of the master plan! Less options for everybody, soon you won't be able to change your username anymore. Who's behind it you ask? Those evil console users of course, they prefer not having any choices at all, obviously.

Also we never landed on the moon.

those are two extremely general quotes that dont specifically address armor. one-piece fallout style armor would allow beth to improve player animations and make room for other features. We'll see what happens of course, but i dont think that those generic quotes saying that "fallout does not equal elder scrolls" do ANYTHING to resolve this question.

nor do I think this is a conspiracy to rob players of choice - I just think its a decision that allows the dev to put more resources into other areas. pauldrons were not cut just to niggle players - that would be absurd. its a design choice based on programming and aesthetic considerations. Its just that I would really hate to lose my ability to make my character look unique through different pants/shirt/boot combos. I really didnt like this part of the fallout games and outfitting my character and playing dress-up is probably my favorite part of rpg gaming.

Those aren't generic quotes. They're responses, from Pete, when he was asked the very same question you're asking of whether Skyrim will have Fallout style armor.

I'm not saying I don't believe you, but do you have a link to the video/print article/audio this question and answer is from? Or are you personally asking him that question and posting his spoken answers?

The question and his responses were through twitter. I don't know how to link to twitter responses otherwise I would. If you want you can check out his tweets, his name is DCDeacon. They're from around February I believe, so you'll have to sift through quite a few tweets. I assure you it's their though. I've followed every single tweet by Pete since the Skyrim announcement.

It's called faith, get some.

If people had a fraction of faith in what Bethesda was doing with Skyrim compared to the worry they had, these forums would be a lot more content...

...and quiet.

Hopefully it will be Morrowind style, with separate pauldrons and gloves. Boots, legs, chest, and helmet.

...and capes for good measure? :D

Not that I'm taking sides with the author of this thread, but blind faith can also lead to negative consequences. Simply just having faith and not questioning something that bugs you is a naive way of thinking. I'm not saying that people should overdo it with the questioning either, but it never hurts to question something that doesn't seem right to you. After all, no questioning can lead to the company believing that all their fans are totally happy with their products; if, and I repeat IF and only IF, this is the case, it can actually result to unpleasant changes with their future products. I'm glad Bethesda isn't a company that thinks the way you do. I'm glad Bethesda actually learns what players from their gaming community want based on several largely popular mods for their games such as OOO, various animation mods, and Deadly Reflex.
