Worried About Limited Customization

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 4:09 pm

go on brink official page.
go to features.
there are 5 things listed, one over view, one system requirments, and then there are the 3 gimmicks.
-customization (listed first.)
-team play
-smart button

black ops wasnt based on customization, it was based on an already established community that trusted the developers to make the game they wanted, a cookie cutter FPS.

Customization: The 11 different customizable features on each character model are far more than normally found in a game. I have yet to see an MMO that offers that many slots. Granted BRINK may not have the hundreds of armor models that games like WoW do, but you do get to change the look of those 12 that you do get. (Some of the colors cause rather drastic pattern changes [check the E3 2010 video]) MMOs may also have hundreds of weapon models, but again no tweaking there besides adding some glitter. CoD:BO gave you the option to add a clan tag, camouflage (because orange guns are sneakier), and an emblem to the gun. You could also add up to 2 attachments. BRINK lets you add up to 4 attachments to most guns. (I'd take some more stat changes over a epeen on my gun any day)

Team Play: As a class based shooter BRINK mandates a small level of cooperation for a team to succeed. The more cooperation, the better the team. Splash Damage sought to further encourage this by giving players that work together more experience points and score than a "super-ninja-assassin light operative" could ever achieve on his own. If you are worried that lights will be running amok, I suggest you watch the Get SMART: General Gameplay where the buffed light goes up against a heavy.

SMART Button: This is BRINK's true hook (not gimmick). The SMART system allows for more fluid maneuvering. No more having to walk around a waist high wall or risking your life climbing (yes, put your gun away and climb) over the barrier. The SMART button itself is really just a training tool; anything you can do with it, you can do better using good ol' jumps and crouches.

As for cookie cutters... Splash Damage doesn't mutilate their desserts or their players with re-skinned sequels.

Although I would have worded it differently, I definitely agree that customization was a key aspect that caught my attention at first. The fact that you have that added to a game that requires squads to work together as a cohesive unit, the fact that you are developing the same character whether it be in campaign, open play, or challenges, not to mention the amazing amount of support for competitive play (see Brink TV). I mean you put all that into one game with the look and game play...we have a damn good game on our hands for sure.

Hell compared to every other competitive FPS out there BRINK has tons more customization.. In most you get like 2 or 3 different skins and a wookie costume.. and that's it. BRINK blows that away..

Hell it even would rival some RPG's in variations in appearance... So I see your argument as invalid... and disagree.. good day sir! :poke:

I'm not sure if anyone has said this but this, shouldn't we assume that the videos you've seen are most likely of early game? I've never heard of a developer putting out end game content spoilers unless it were intended. I would assume that they don't want to show everything right off the bat as that would ruin the experience for a lot of players, and since there is over 100 quadrillion variations of customization, I think it would be safe to assume that there is a decent amount of customization.

Think of another multi system game/multiplayershooter with the same level of CHARACTER customization

Something people are overlooking is that you can customize weapons as well AND choose from all the abilities to build a character to your liking. These all fall under customization.

But the creator of this topic was namely criticising the amount of cosmetic customization

wow. reading this entire discussion has given me a headache. Is the OP that bored with his life that he has to complain about not having enough customization in a game that as far as i know is more than what most games offer.

come on man, really?

after watching the most recent vids of customization i am now thoroughly distressed as to the extremely limited amount of options available. there was about 9 options for headgear? that is weak and about 12 options for torso wear? come on for customization being a HUGE selling point they must have more than this. i am starting to regret my pre-order.....

Yeah, there aint a metric overload of pieces, but they added re-textures to boost the numbers, mix match that with this and recolour them like that - vóila, a character you just made who probably not that many will look like :P

I must say that buying a game for the full price just for the customization of your character is a wee bit silly :/

I'm under the impression that you not only unlock outfits as you go along, but also colors; I'm not sure though. Regardless, this game is by FAAAAAR the most customizable shooter out there. And guess what, I'm sure we will see more outfits in the future, it's an easily DLC-able thing.

Just one thing. This is a fast paced game, right ? Do you actually think you gonna notice so tiny things like tatoos ? I'm sure you won't even recognize the faces. You will only see differences in body type and clothing. Anything else is just a play-around for the create-a-character-tool and has no effect on the actual game. Of course these numbers of variations are just eyewash. But even if there were "only" around 30 obvious different characters it was still more than in any other game. But actually I don't really care about that because this not the reason why I want to play this game. If someone cancel his order because of that then I can just shake my head.

I might have to come in defense for the TC. Maybe he shouldn't be so drastic into questioning his pre-order, but he doesn't necessarily have a bad point. Watching some of the streams of people customizing their characters, it did seem slightly underwhelming. That is also only because customization was suppose to be a big aspect of the game the developers constantly talked about. You do get to change the colors for each which is still a cool feature. It isn't really a big complaint either, but I understand where he is coming from. It isn't a huge complaint, just something I have noticed as well. With how the developers talked about the amount of customization you could see why you would see our perspective. But I am still excited for the game and I do not regret my pre-order.

But here is a question: Is it possible you unlock more ways to customize your characters the higher ranks and levels you go? That might be a point missed within this whole discussion.

Everything you can unlock is there in the menu, there is just a small lock next to it so you can't use it

EDIT: Level up to remove those locks :P

customization is not a BIG selling point, Teamplay and Mingle-Player are the big selling points. Customization is a selling point however, and with more options than i can spell the word the represents the number, i am happy with it. if you are not, then either ignore it or don't play the game period. simple.

Yeah, Brink has more customization then a lot of other online fps, it just doesn't stand up to other games that have a lot of customization, but there other genres.

Everyone seem to have ignored this, it may be a cut down version.

There is a new/recent video from someone who has got the game early showing the character customization, so it's not a cut down version.
