Worries about character customization

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:36 am

For instance say that i wanted my character to have a certain Shirt/pant/whatever, but i dont want him to be built like a brick Sh*t house.
Do you guys think there will be any trouble with that or are the archetypes going to be truly just a base for your own world of customisation... or are we going to be limited to what we can use by archetype.

Archetypes do not equal bodytypes.
They are displayed on one most of the time, but they don't require that one.

Also you don't have to ask the same question in two threads.

The idea behind limiting character customisation is essentially the same like not delivering female player avatars: The Art-Style.

With BRINK's - so called - hyperrealistic art-style SplashDamage want to make sure, that every item inside the gaming-world blends into this art-style very well.
That means an APB-esque customisation is not possible. And at the same time a bazzillion items would not work either, because they'd all have to be very, very similar looking.

Yes, that's the reason they do not want to include "sliders" for the face---so that the characters can fit the artstyle of the world.

(BUT that's not the reason why they did not include females. It's a resources and balancing issue-thing, NOT an "art-style" thing. -_- )

I think they said that the archetypes are there to give an idea of the customization---and that the archetypes only have about 75% of the stuff available. There will be more to be unlocked, and, seeing the gallery, I think there's a good variety of mix-and-match items to give your character a unique look. ^_^

There's only so much customization you can do. No game is perfect in that aspect (even games that include "sliders" and PC modding tools like the Sims, Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls games, etc).

Does anyone think that the resistance needs some stolen security equipment? Like stuff that looks like your character took it off a dead security soldier. So it looks ripped, or has bullet-holes in it, or even blood on it.

If there truly only are these ''archtype'' bound clothing items, then I fear that it wont be enough to make 90% of the players unique, since I saw a cellphone filmed video of some customization of the Looks jacket, and it just changed colour, but of course he didn't scroll through 'em all

Yes! That was what I was wondering as well when I was looking through the "customization" page on the official site. Couldn't the Resistance take some of the armor off of dead soldiers or something? (It doesn't have to be exactly the same--like Blaven said, it could have rips and bullet holes in it).

I found one resistance item that looks like it was taken from the security. A helmet that has some writing or graffiti on it (Not sure whats on it).

Not including female avatars for the sake of balancing does only apply, if they have different hitboxes than their male counterparts.
The ressources-thing (read: time-consuming research and development) are a valid and well known argument, though.

Hey there OP. Seems like we have a lot in common.

I really have almost nothing to add, I could just quote your entire here. I'm a huge fan of character customization, and that often has me hyped up about games. City of Heroes/Villains, Champions, Fallout & Oblivion... But not once have I been fully satisfied. Now, it's clear off the bat that both Champs and CoX have more customization options that Brink. But I don't know, I kind of feel like the coolness of the options makes up for it.

Well, they're MMO's and open-world RPG's,it's very important to look unique in those games,MMO's especially. There's so many custom options because there's going to be millions of people playing. Less people will continue to play if they find that there are several other folks that look like them, as it takes away from the specialness of your own character, and breaks immersion for the player. In open-world RPG's they let you customise the balls off of your character because the worlds are so full of interesting and different looking people and creatures that you need to be different and interesting as well. It's more immersive if the character looks like how you want, because you project onto him more.

I can understand Brink having less because there's 16 people in a small place firing guns. That would kinda hurt it if it had to render super customised characters all the time, rather than it rendering what they know it can do.

Hell, I read on a press release for the previews that it gets as detailed as even being able to change the TEXTURES of everything, and the devs are frequently comparing it to MMO-scale customization... somebody even likened it to City of Heroes, I believe.

Based purely off of that, it sounds like it's shaping up to be the best customization I've ever seen in an FPS. Even if the devs were having us on a bit as to the scale, judging from screenshots and the gallery on the official site it's already set to trump anything else out there in shooters (or as far as I'VE played in my 12 years gaming).

I'm pretty sure I saw some clown-like face paint, and the resistance clothing would work great for remaking the serial killing madman.

yes there is clown face paint and not like Joker clown but like Black cheeks white face red nose all painted of course but there is how ever a joker type scar(newest Joker) some kinda smile scar which would go great with it lol.with the clown alone he look's pretty crazy + guns and awesome outfits = a new change of diapers...
P.S. only thing i'm a little unsure of is amounts of clothing but we all already know it's pretty small so there's that but i just don't know how many of those clothes i'll like and they're skins.

The Chelsea-Smile-Scar is really only Christopher Nolan's version of The Joker.
Originally his face was transformed (and bleached) by chemicals, having him smile in that awkward way permanently.

I take it you can't customise height on this game? I thought I'd ask as I'd seen nothing to suggest it thus far.. plus, making someone shorter would probably not fit with the lanky art style.
