Worry Wart

Post » Mon Oct 04, 2010 4:03 am

Hello. I always open with an "H" word. You may also know I am a worry wart.

Graphics... I am concerned about them, I have seen the graphics in the trailer and "There all right..."

And will it be slash, slash like OB? Or slash, block, finishing move?

Thanks

Well... In oblivion I didn't just go "slash slash" I used block as well, a finishing move is just what happens when you deal the last bit of damage to an enemy, as opposed to them just falling to the ground in the direction you sent them flying from attacking them.

The only graphics we've seen are console graphics. 1280x720 and low texture resolution. Although it looks like there's some AA except on the trees? Not sure.

I'm waiting for some PC screenshots so I can have a Skyrim wallpaper at a respectable resolution.

Oh, then why are you worrying about graphics? The only console games that have incredible graphics tend to be linear, not open world.

For me the combat is slash/finish, I won't need to block cause I'm a deadly assassin and all enemies die before they know what stabbed them :D
Concerning graphics I've seen better this year, I may be a graphics freak but I will admit I was expecting better.

Well I believe finishing moves require additional input as well as special combat moves from perks so combat will more like fencing or sword fighting then dumb slashing and button mashing, even if combat will not flawless there can be mods then thats will fix it.

About graphic
Well Skyrim has visible improvement in graphic over oblivion and there is some nice new eye-candy features added like shadows and game uses much more resources of consoles and has better optimization this time in compare with Oblivion, there is also inbuilt support of DX 11 but it not used mostly and now imagine how well graphic can be expanded furtherer with mods, like it was before for Morrowind and Oblivion.
Graphic is not so high important as quest&dialogues, gameplay and design all of this features does not relay on hires textures and high-poly meshes or support of last API, and better if devs will concentrate their work on independent from graphic features.

Combat in OB for me was slash, block, attempt to disarm, block, weakish destruction spell, slash, block, knockdown, slash, block other enemy, absorb health, slash, paralyze, slash slash slash, block, restore fatigue, standing power attack.
Any system ( except press space to win, I suppose ) is what you make of it.

@The graphics will probably be quite decent for the 360 considering its hardware. The pc version on the other hand will most likely be behind par as far as the current gen pc graphics go.

The graphics in Oblivion were "omg wow" and the graphics I've seen so far in Skyrim are just decent for their year.

The graphics look much better than Oblivion, but compared to comtemporary games, no matter the genre or game world size, it's nothing to brag about. Still, it IS a [censored] huge world with a HUGE draw distance (and, despite the size, there'll be some very in-depth details like fishes and birds), so I'm happy! :)

And on the fighting - from what I've read so far (I've read it all basically), the fighting seems to be way more tactical and dynamic; the animations way better. No more running backwards and [censored] the right trigger all the time.

The graphics are nice, it's not on BF3 level, but it newer could be on BF3 level. And at least I can play Skyrim on my PC...

As for combat, everybody goes how Oblivion was just mindless hack and slash. That's not true, that would be Morrowind. In Oblivion you had to look for openings, and time your blocks and dodges when the enemy attacked. The problem was the health of the enemy, sometimes it was way too much...
Skyrim will have similar combat with more strategical thinking with the new playstyles, like the new spell system.

Fighting will certainly be improved, and the graphics are pretty good, I can't say anything about the graphics though, since I've only seen pre-release screenshots.

Can't vote. Because I disagree with the premise

Will the fighting be, slash, slash like OB? Or slash, block, finishing move?

Oblivion was only "slash, slash" if that's all you did. But you can also have "slash, block, finishing move" (ie finishing ove - power attack) in Oblivion. And you can have more more creative melee combat by taking into account things like terrain and local layout, etc. Oblivion melee combat was actually very good I think.

As far as graphics, Bethesda has a track record for state of the art graphics and beyond. At release Oblivion was spectacular. So was Fallout 3 in most cases, which improved graphics significantly from Oblivion. Fallout NV didn't improve graphics much over Fallout 3, but it wasn't really a Bethesda developed game. So yes I think Graphics will likely be as good or better than any game available at the release of Skyrim.

...As for combat, everybody goes how Oblivion was just mindless hack and slash. That's not true,...

Just read this after I posted. I obviously completely agree. Oblivion was not mindless hack and slash, unless you mindlessly hacked and slashed. Poor Oblivion, it gets so many unfair criticisms.

That said, I'd expect Skyrim will improve upon Oblivion (and Fallout 3) combat.

Well.. I guess the graphics are good. But I wish they were like BF3. Would there be any chance of them getting better before they release the game?

You can say that again. When combat in a game gets to the point to where I can do something else like watch a movie while just spamming the right trigger for 3 minutes and the goblin still isn't dead, there is something wrong.

So I just saw a few moments from Witcher 2 firsthand and...

It looked just like the screenshots from Skyrim...
I don't know what was that giant "current-gen graphics and technology" Witcher has been using, because it hardly looked more detailed than, say Dragon Age 2...

So yeah, I think Skyrim will look good for its time.

I think the level of detail of the game world not just pretty screens for your wallpaper anyone can upscale res to make screen shots few can make a believeable world while your playing it. Skyrim will set the bar fairly high for openworld RPGs, and before anyone says Witcher 2 that game will be great, but i dont consider it a "real" RPG since you can only play as one character which i believe RPGs are games that let you choose what type of MC you want to play as, not just what weapon i want to use now. Ugh i was ninjad by Witcher im really starting to hate that game...
