Worst Game Finale?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:04 am

Really? I thought that was a great way to end it. Leaves you wanting more and allows the writers to expand more, like Karen Traviss did. :)

Not so much the ending itself, but the final fight. It seemed very...uninspired?

Eh, I dunno...Bethesda could very well write a better plot for Fallout 4, but...unlike Obsidian, they don't have particularly good writers.

Honestly I'm in the group of fans that plays their games for the hundreds of hours of exploration, not for their writing. And while I would gladly welcome it, whether or not Fallout 4 has an exceptional plot doesn't matter much to me. But I know it matters to others, so I do hope that Bethesda's continuously expanding team eventually gains some better writers.

Despite my undying love for the game, I must go with Bioshock. The amazing ride that was the other 99% of the game just leads up to a poorly designed and stereotypical "epic" boss fight. Accompanied by 1 of 3 crappy 10 - 15 second cut scenes. Major disappointment.

Got an alternative? :P

It wasn't really a boss fight, more like a controlled cutscene.

I'm thinking of making a "Best Game Finale?" thread since I can't really think of any horrendous ones.

Yeah. The part with AR was pretty much the climix. After that, it just wasn't that great with Atlas.

I just thought it was too abrupt and going too far away from what had previously happened. To me it was like if my friend was driving me somewhere, it's a nice ride the whole way there. No slow downs in traffic or slow old ladies, just good ol' smooth sailing. Then right as we reach our destination he completely veers off the road to the right and we end up in a completely different place. IMHO

That's what I like to see in endings :) Predictable endings bore me.

Well, they blew a hole in the ceiling to let the ravens in so they could drop the bomb, however it was destroyed by the stupid transforming Brumak that Dom and Markus were riding on.

If that Brumak was shot and killed by the ravens, and a final level which instigated planting the bomb and making a run for it occurred, i'm sure it would've felt much more rewarding...especially on harder difficulties.

Writing and plot doesn't matter to me, either. I can easily count the number of games I've played with good stories and still have some fingers left over, and have enjoyed the rest, Bethesda's games included, for what they were regardless.

The Brumak was Lambent though, as in filled with Immulsion, as in HIGHLY volatile fuel. :P

So it would have exploded even if the ravens shot it, having the same effect as a hammer strike/lightmass bomb.

It plays to the story of the third game, with the Lambent running rampant and all.

Risen.
"Hey, you know that character you've created and been trying to define throughout the game through his choice of weapons and combat style? Screw that! Use this weapon, wear this armour and go fight the big-bad in a specific way that'll be exactly the same for everyone who fights this battle.

Pfffffff...

Quake.
"Hey, you know all that time you've spent collecting armor and weapons, including the uber-badass one in the final level? Well guess what, they don't matter since none of them can harm the Big Bad and you have to telefrag it anyway!"

I'd say FO3 if Broken Steel hadn't liberated it.

For X-mas I bought me Far Cry 2 for a couple of €'s and I've been playing it in my spare time. Yesterday I finally finished the game and I was really dissapointed. What a bad ending!!!! It made few to no sence.

So I was wondering, what game had the worst ending ever? :P

Yeah the story in Far Cry 2 was pretty confusing, but I thought the ending was quite good. The worst game ending was probably Fallout 3 for me. Until Broken Steel, obviously. :P

I'll go with Dungeon Siege. After Diablo 2, that was just lame. LAME.

honestly i can't think of one satisfying finale at all - i hate final boss fights, i hate the huge difficulty spike, at that point i have usually had enough and i just want to finish, i would appreciate something impressive on the developers part, instead of them expecting something impressive on my part, i never have more than two or three goes at a final boss, after that i just quit and move on.

i am reminded of fable 2 though, when my evil pirate, after having his heart melted by his five adorable kids, in the end chose love over fame and money, and that was indeed very satisfying, except then, upon finishing a further sidequest, i released a horde of angry spirits, which swept into the town where my family lived and killed my wife! and all the kids were packed off to foster care without so much as a goodbye!
and that was that, heartbroken, absolutely heartbroken, which is something i guess, but i swear to you i will never ever again become so attached to a virtual family. lionhead you bastards.

I've already explained why I didn't care for Morrowind's story. Fallout 3's is just full of so many logical inconsistencies, it's not worth going into.

Fallout 3 did have some amazing writing.... but it was all in the terminal entries in various out-of-the-way places. Like the medical tents at Germantown Police HQ. Or LOB Industries. Etc, etc, etc.

Bethesda doesn't do quests well.... but they're amazing at world-building. (It's why I prefer FO3 to FO:NV - Obsidian made a much better and more complex web of quest & plotline, but the world itself isn't as interesting to explore. There's very little in it that doesn't relate to the questlines in some way.)

That's pretty much been the case with all of Bethesda's games, they have some well-written backstory in all the various in-game documents, and often poorly written stories for quests and such. And I think the reason is very clear; Bethesda has actual writers write the texts, but the designers write the quests.

Disagree about about the world-building in New Vegas and Fallout 3, though. FO3 may have more of a history concerning the pre-war era, but NV feels like a real place. Each of the various settlements has a reason for being there, have means of sustaining themselves. In FO3, it's a mystery how any of these places get by; there's no production of anything anywhere (like, say, FOOD). Quests in each of the locations is usually something wacky and unrelated to the place (like ridding Canterbury Commons of a pair of superhero wannabes, or finding a lost android in Rivet City), as opposed to NV's that involve helping solve people's general problem or doing more down-to-earth tasks (like doing some 'corporate espionage' for the Crimson Caravans, or tracking down some lost scouts for the Brotherhood). And then there's Little Lamplight...ugh.

I 'ed at the end of FO3 but still love the game. Good thing for previous saves. I didn't get Broken Steel so I don't know [how] it fixed it.

Most recently: Black Ops.
--The last bit of the game is especially fun and the level design is pretty cool, but then...it just ends...with a "quicktime" event nonetheless. And then it's all "Good job. AMERICA!!!" I was like "Um...what?" and I'm American. It just seemed really out of place, stupid and dumb. Yes, stupid AND dumb.

Earlier: I'll have to think a bit....

that MW2 bastard that came out last year or so..
I know its main selling point was multiplayer snipefest action, but for someone that actually likes storymodes in games, it was the shortest most unsatisfying experience since i picked up Brute Force and declared it unplayable 30 seconds after starting.

Oh, another that I wasn't really sure what to expect was the end to Magicka. I mean, it's a $10 game from an independent developer, but I guess I was still "let down" by the ending. It just seemed really anti-climatic. Defeating other bosses and parts of the game felt more rewarding.

To be fair, Activision has found themselves a golden ticket with the CoD franchise. Simply reskin and release to record setting sales every year or so. With all of that money for next to no work, you can't really blame them for phoning in the sequels.
