I have never played an Elder Scrolls game and I really need something to play until Skyrim comes out. So I wanted to ask you guys/girls if it's worth it.

Some other questions about the game:
How long is the main quest?
Will I be at a disadvantage playing as a pure warrior?
Does the game play well on Xbox 360 (I will be getting the this copy http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/games/elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-game-of-the-year-edition/92835, if I decide to get the game.)

Personally, I think it's worth it. I've just started playing for the first time about a week ago and I love it. It certainly kills the time untill Skyrim. I'd reccomend getting it for PC if you can, but that's only if you like mods.

If I had a PC that could run it I would, but I only have a laptop.

Oh dear. Well it's worth buying, sure, just because it's inexpensive. But if you've never played it, it might be a hard decision which game to play first. I'm happy I'm not in your shoes.



As long as you want it to be. If you rush thru it, it's possible to do the entire thing in a few hours. The thing is, chances are you'll be sidetracked by a multitude of other side quests, or exploring, or whatever. There's a LOT to distract the player in this game, which is a good thing.



Depends. It's possible to go thru the game and not use any magic at all, but it's also more difficult. You'll eventually need to heal yourself somehow (and what happens when you run out of potions but cannot rest?)

I have had one almost pure melee character, she only had a healing spell. That was her only magic, although she relied quite a bit on poisons and potions.



I suppose it does. There are endless discussions about which console is better (PS3 or Xbox). I've only played the PS3 version, but I'm sure the Xbox version is fine. :shrug:

You probably won't get a whole playthrough done in time for Skyrim, but possibly the main quest, which I believe to be around 20 hours. No disadvantages really, just make sure you don't level past 25, otherwise you'll struggle without magic. I hear it runs well on the 360 (I play PC), but there was a game destroying bug, but I don't know if that was ever fixed.

It's up to you, but I say get it if you're looking for a cheap and fun way to kill time

Second, Yes it's worth it. Great game.
A pure warrior, will be challenging. Stock up on health potions. I would mix a little magic in there or at least alchemy.
I play on the 360. It's a little buggy at times, but nothing gamebreaking. You will be fine.
That version is fine. You can get the extra content off of XBL. If you got the GOTY, you would have to purchase Shivering Isle from XBL anyway, because the disk version doesn't work. Unless you find a used version of the GOTY.

"Game destroying bug" I don't like the sound of that :sadvaultboy:. Since I will probably only play the game for 3 weeks are there any other games anyone could recommend? I'm just looking for a fun (cheap) game that will last me until November.

I've been playing it, on the 360, for almost 4yrs. I have never had any major issues at all. I haven't even heard of a bug like that. Don't worry, you will be fine.

Roll Tide Roll baby!!! Will I have to buy the Shivering Isle or is it free? I guess I can use some magic (could I use destruction and healing, or can you only chose one?), but will that make make me have to lower his physical capabilities?

The only game-destroying bug I know of is the A-bomb, or animation bomb. It only shows up once games have a lot of hours...like 300+ I've lost a couple games to the A-bomb on PS3: one lasted about 340 hours, the other was up to 366.

I don't know of any other games to recommend. :shrug: I only ever play Oblivion, with an occasioanol tryst to Sims 3. It svcks that you only have 3 weeks. I've been playing on and off for 3 years and there's still things I've never even done yet.

XBL will charge you for the SI expansion. It alone is a good 30-40 hrs of gameplay. If you are just looking for something to TIDE you over till 11-11, the base game is good.

You can choose any combination of 7 skills, for Majors. That doesn't mean you can't use Minors full time. All of the skills are available, to train and master, to ALL characters, throughout the whole game.

You can start out a pure warrior and turn into a pure mage, or rogue, or ranger or what ever, later in the game.

if you never have played ANY TES-game and just are looking for some fun till you get skyrim, you might buy morrowind instead.
will save you some money (as prolly it will be cheaper) and (but thats my opinion) morrowind is a better game

Morrowind is a great game in it's own right. But I wouldn't worry about trying to find a copy for the 360. They are rare. Obl is closer to getting you ready for Skyrim than Morrowind. Forget about it.

Morrowind is a niche game nowadays, and finding an Xbox copy is getting pretty hard. Modern gaming has gotten very used to the current trends, and Morrowind follows none of them. Combat is based on die rolls, the game NEVER holds your hand, and most of the touches we have now gotten used to (like voice acting) are absent. You need patience to find that sweet spot, and sorry to say, most gamers nowadays don't have any. Put one of them into the world, and all they'd do is run around lost for a few minutes before trying to slaughter everyone in Seyda Neen, keep missing because their skill is low, get killed by a guard, and then put the game away with a sour look on their face.

For this reason, I recommend starting with Oblivion, and then if you like what you see, give Morrowind a try. Morrowind has a way of alienating people who are not really into what it does, but is delightfully accepting to any RPG fan, be it video game cRPGs or a pen-and-paper game.

It's a love-hate relationship.

Of course it′s worth your bucks, this is an awesome game Heck, I still try to get people to buy the first Deus Ex game and that came out 2000 and has had at least two sequels

It is absolutely worth it. The graphics are a little dated, but outside that this game is pretty much my all time favorite, and I was gaming back in the NES days.

For 20bucks or there abouts its absolutely a bargain. Its simply fantastic.

I wouldn't touch vanilla Oblivion; the leveling system, meaningless character creation and a leveled world totally kills Oblivion for me. Dunno if that's because I've already played vanilla Oblivion once or because I'm used to play better thought-out games by now...
But with mods you can greatly enhance your gaming experience but afaik you cannot mod XBox Oblivion, so... I would simply wait a few days for TES5: Skyrim and see if they did a better job this time.

If you can afford both games and wish to spend money on both games, it's definitely worth a shot. I think you'll really love Oblivion and it'll excite you that in november a, hopefully, even better game will be released!

I play the vanilla game, and I think that it's fine. However most RPG gamers are used to becoming super powerful at the end of an adventure. Whereas I embrace the old school philosophy that a game should get harder as you progress.

I've intentionally tried to build unsuccessful characters, and it can't be done. Levels 1-10 are easy 11-20 can be tricky, 20-40/50 your pretty much in god mode.

I bought the game . Loving it at the moment even though I have no idea what i'm doing, lol. Just did the Thoronir quest, pretty hard when the guards catch you every time you enter Aragamirs (can't spell his name) house. On my way to see the guy in Weyron Prior. If anyone on xbox wants to add me go ahead, my gamertag is Neos Daimon.

Only thing I can see that is out of place is the jumping. I feel like Master Chief of the Halo series, lol.

I'm glad you picked it up, it's truly an excellent game.

Use sneak mode and make sure the eye is faded before you try to enter the house.
